Because Norman Pritchard won Silver medal in athletics for India into the year of 1900.[1] You have to remove this wrong info and add wright one. Newton Euro (talk) 15:24, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Make two different sub-section for 1] personal life 2] Career.

The life and Career section is too lengthy and difficult to read. It has separate sections for personal life , Early life, Indian army career, Career ie Sports career, and Award & recognition section is just money declared by different organizations but it's not received by this honorable athlete. In India, different organizations announce awards but they don't give them to the respected athlete. So it's a disputed subject. Will they give this money really to Neeraj Chopra Ji or just these are false lies. Newton Euro (talk) 16:57, 7 August 2021 (UTC) Neeraj chopra received 1 lakh from olympics and a car from Tata

I've just made two sections of it. Thanks for the idea. I don't know about other things, so I leave it untouched. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:13, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Change Ror Maratha to Ror.

Please refer to the village head (sarpanch) remark in the ESPN article below. There is nothing such as for Maratha - It's Roar, so please use the right term. https://www.espn.com/olympics/summer/athletics/story/_/id/31980649/neeraj-chopra-haryana-village-celebrates-tokyo-olympics-gold-medal Flymav (talk) 23:43, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

The Roar community is genetically related to the people in NW of the subcontinent, around the Swat valley.[1] By looks also they resemble people from NW of the Indian subcontinent (fair and tall). They are thus similar to Khatris and Kambojas. The genetic evidence conclusively disproves the Maratha hypothesis. It is however likely that they fought along with the Maratha army (which included soldiers from multiple communities, as is well known). Malaiya (talk) 01:57, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Hindustan Times article says that, Neerja Chopra sir is from ROR Maratha cast. It's a reputed newspaper. You have to provide reliable references, who says that he's not from Maratha's cast.Newton Euro (talk) 07:41, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
I have seen your Rod Maratha clan article. That Rors are Marathas is a speculative claim, not a fact. Genetic studies have shown that they are not Maratha, which is confirmed by their visual appearance. It must be mentioned that Maratha armies were lead by Brahmins and the soldiers could have come from several communities including Marathas, Dhangar, or even Mahar. He should be just called a Ror, which he is. Malaiya (talk) 22:40, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Incidentally the concept promoted by an editor Sitush that "The mention of caste requires self-identification in the case of living people" is improper. Malaiya (talk) 22:57, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Not done: No "ror" in the article, except as part of "crore". Best that way, IMO. Usedtobecool ☎️ 02:44, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Write in the heading section and the Career section about Norman Pritchard.

Norman Pritchard was the first Indian athlete who won an individual medal for India in track and field event in Olympics. It was in the year of 1900, the second Olympics. So Neeraj Chopra is the second Indian track and field athlete, who won the Olympic medal for India, You have to mention it in the heading section, It's important. Many readers thinking here that Neerja Chopra is the first track and field athlete who won the Olympic medal for India, which is not true. He is second after Pritchard. But you also have to write that he's the first track and field athlete and Jevelin thrower who first Olympic Gold medal for India. Overall hea the third individual sportsperson who won the Olympic medal for India after Pritchard in 1900, Kashabha Jadhav in wrestling in, 1952 and Bindra in 2008. You have to write it. Also, it is very important to write that he's the first athlete of India who won a track and field Olympic Gold medal and first track and field Olympic medalist after India's freedom.[1] Newton Euro (talk) 07:59, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

According to the article on Pritchard, he was born in India to parents of British ancestry. The International Olympic Committee recognizes him as having won his two medals for India. David notMD (talk) 11:30, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

But Mr. Pritchard used India's travel documents, he was born in India. Most of his best athletics record he created in Bengal presidency, in India. He was educated in India. He left India after 1900 Olympics participation, so how can he's a British citizen. International Olympic Committee says that he's an Indian athlete and we folks of India consider Norman Pritchard our Indian national.Newton Euro (talk) 19:49, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Omit rubbish, insulting , body shame information from Early life, personal life sub-section.

This section mentioning that Neeraj Chopra was fat , if reliable sources say that then that's ok. But local boys taunt, tease him by saying Sarpanch or he was looked like a Sarpanch, it's not worth to mention here. You can mention that local boys bullied him. But don't mention the word by using which they bullied him. Look Ragging , bullying is a big problem in India & all over the world in schools & colleges. So don't mention bullies and their words in WP. remove it, and warne, block editor who is written it.Newton Euro (talk) 08:13, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

A ref confirms he was obese as a pre-teen (90 kg at age 12) and teased by his peers, which led to his family enrolling him at a gym/exercise facility, which in turn led to an interest in javelin = his 2021 Olympic gold medal. David notMD (talk) 11:25, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Contorted firsts

With the plethora of manufactured "firsts" that the Indian media have concocted in recent days, and which we seem to be slavishly following, can anyone verify that he was the first Indian Olympian to start his event with dirty shoelaces? It seems mad to me. - Sitush (talk) 13:43, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

BYJU'S

Does anyone know of a connection between Chopra and BYJU? Is the company just jumping on the publicity bandwagon? It seems odd without a connection when they could donate it to one of the many needy causes in India. The same applies to the cricket outfits - all very weird. - Sitush (talk) 14:13, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Can't we just give a total with "by various organizations". I know it's vaguer and we don't like vagueness, but posting the whole list is obviously falling into the companies' publicity stunts, not to mention too detailed, and we don't like too detailed about minutiae either. Usedtobecool ☎️ 19:03, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

And it's unclear, after announcing all this reward, they really give it to the athletes or not. Some media reports say that these all organizations are notorious for these announcement things, they always do that but most of the time they really don't hand money to the athletes. Some have to add a note there that these are just announcements, they're using this opportunity for publicity, not a single penny still paid to this athlete and when the dust will settle down likely they will not accept his telephone call. Newton Euro (talk) 18:43, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

I am happy just to bin all mentions of gifts in that section. It seems on paper that he has become a dollar millionaire based on his Olympics. Sooner or later, if that is actually what transpires, a reliable source will say that, succinctly, and when it does we can include a single sentence about it. - Sitush (talk) 07:06, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Makes sense to me. Usedtobecool ☎️ 07:17, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Lovely Professional University

It is very obvious from things that have appeared here that LPU is keen on promoting themselves, even by association with others. I don't have the time but someone perhaps should keep an eye on Lovely Professional University for breaches of WP: PROMO and WP: COI, and not just in connection with Chopra. - Sitush (talk) 12:35, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Neeraj's ethnic background

So it's the same scenario again. An Indian shines at an international stage and we have multiple people belonging to different communities trying to claim him as one of their own. The Early Life section of the article links to the Chopra page where it's written that it's a Hindu Khatri and Sikh surname. While Chopra's surname is indeed prominent among Khatris, other communities use the surname too. This is not uncommon with surnames in India as we know that the surname can be used by different communities, an example being Chauhan . Moreover, some articles present him as a member of the Ror community https://www.hindustantimes.com/brunch/pm-modi-mark-zuckerberg-all-messaged-me-says-junior-javelin-world-champ-neeraj-chopra/story-5uITOtniwhY3Ng3AMeJRhP.html. In the light of this ambiguity, I would suggest that it's best to not link him to any community currently until there's an absolute proof.

Piyushkumar911 (talk) 16:06, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Chopra is a rather common last name in several communities. However, the local reports unanimously report that he is a Ror.Malaiya (talk) 23:00, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Hey Malaiya, I am aware that Neeraj is from Ror community, many people from that area who I know, have testified to this but that isn't enough for Wikipedia inclusion. As per Wikipedia standards, the community of a person can be listed only when he/she has explicitly admitted as belonging to the community in an interview.
Piyushkumar911 (talk) 05:44, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
For those who are curious, here is his grandmother, explicitly saying that they belong to the Ror community. Malaiya (talk) 20:08, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[1]
There are numerous mentions in the press of the Roar community that Neeraj was born in. I should clarify - I have no connection with them, except as a fellow Indian. Here are some.

[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

  • The mention of caste requires self-identification in the case of living people – see here for details. So please do not add these details unless he self-identify as a Ror or some other caste. - NitinMlk (talk) 20:48, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Nitin: It is time this rule is questioned. A few influential Wikipedia editors are creating and enforcing a rule that makes no sense. What is widely discussed in newspapers, and by family members, is prohibited on Wikipedia, where there is no prohibition on "blasphemous" and "pornographic" material? The rule is no better than Sitush's other rule prohibiting all sources from the "Raj period" (which is the entire duration of 1757- 1947).Malaiya (talk) 02:26, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

No Blp violation for neeraj ' s caste

All sources are saying that Neeraj belongs to the Roar family, Ror is the descents of Maratha in the Panipat 1761 war, as In an Interview Neeraj clearly mentioned him as Ror Maratha:: No Blip violation for caste. https://www.hindustantimes.com/brunch/pm-modi-mark-zuckerberg-all-messaged-me-says-junior-javelin-world-champ-neeraj-chopra/story-5uITOtniwhY3Ng3AMeJRhP_amp.html Ror84here (talk) 03:12, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Neither the self-identifying thing nor the Raj source thing is my "rules". They are the WP: CONSENSUS of the Wikipedia community and have been for many years. Common sense and experience here would tell you that they are reasonable but you are welcome to challenge them. In the case, of the caste thing, that would probably be a discussion best held at the BLP noticeboard.
Or you could just save yourself a lot of wasted time and get on with improving our articles in a myriad of other ways because this is not actually likely to go as you wish. - Sitush (talk) 13:57, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Personal bests

The infobox shows 3 different personal bests for the same discipline. Seems an odd way to do things - is it normal usage? - Sitush (talk) 03:07, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Obviously, by definition, one can only have one personal best in one activity. It should be "88.07m (2021, NR)", assuming the values are correct. Usedtobecool ☎️ 04:52, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
I have fixed it. The World Athletics source (currently citation 4) verifies 88.07 & is used also to support the data in the later table for seasonal bests. - Sitush (talk) 06:03, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Looks to me as if sources vary. It is tricky because I have no doubt a lot of the sources have copied info from each other and from here. - Sitush (talk) 23:48, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Mirroring?

Someone has just added this source, the phrasing of which is startling similar to our article. It is difficult for me to compare old versions on mobile so it would be good if someone else can do it. The comparison needs to be with the state of this article immediately before the source publication date of 9 August. Even heavyweight Indian media very frequently copy from Wikipedia, and this source is by no means in that category. Equally, Indian articles on Wikipedia are very prone to copyright violations by contributors. - Sitush (talk) 23:46, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Chopra received a callback for the national-level training camp in 2015, leaving Panchkula in early 2016. He won a gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games with a throw of 84.23 m, where he equaled the Indian national record."

At the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, his golden throw of 84.23 meters equaled the national record."
