Design basis

[edit]

"Improved Formidable class" as mentioned by Brook cannot be correct, as HMS Formidable was not launched until 17 November 1898 or completed until September 1901 - well over a year after Shikishima. Chesneau & Kolesnik state clearly that the design was based on the Majestic-class battleship. --MChew (talk) 16:57, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I looked through Burt's book on British predreadnoughts to clear up this issue and I think that you, and Chesneau & Kolesnik, are correct. The design of the Formidables isn't even finalized until after the Shikishima-class ships are laid down, although I suspect that the design of the Canopus-class ships also influenced the design for the Japanese ships. I'll change it in all three articles.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:26, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
