Dandiya

Could someone who knows more about Dandiya add information about it to this page, or find some way to either mention it, or link to it, on this page? Thanks, Arcking

I think Garba and Raas (Dandiya Raas) should be in the list of folk dances, but aren't for some reason. Along with Bhangra, these three are probably the most popular Inidan folk dances outside of India. I'm making the suggesion in that article. Then, there would be no need to have a separate mentioning of Dandiya on this page. You could still incorporate it, and the other two, under the folk section if you'd like as popular examples. COTM: First step is to restructure this article

Hey, for all of you who may participate in the collaboration to improve this article, the first step will be to restructure this entire article so that it does not go in all directions. Ideally, Dance in India should have the following: Origin, Types of dance: Classical, Folk and tribal dance in India, Contemporary dance in India==>Dance in Indian cinema is a subsection of this, Noted artists in different dance forms, See also and references. Once you all start editing, can someone please remove these sections on Ottu... and Dasi Attam? They are forms of dance alright, but we can't go on writing paragraphs about every single dance form in India, can we? Also, in a section: Classical Dance in India, ideally there should just be a mention of dances in this genre with a link to the main article: Classical dance in India. Same for folk and tribal and contemporary. Noopur28 (talk) 12:01, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Major ones are likely to have a para or two. WP:BE BOLD and go ahead with the said changes. Consensus is only needed for edits that may be controversial. Cheers, Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 13:47, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Lists of dance

There seems to be some confusion about existing lists of folk dance forms. I found this list List of ethnic, regional, and folk dances by origin before I could find List of folk dances. There is no consistency in naming all these articles. Ideally, Dance in India is not Indian dance because there is nothing like Indian dance singularly. Similarly, there is no Indian classical dance so the article should be Classical Dance in India. Likewise, Folk dance in India and Contemporary dance in India. I have created the article for Folk dance in India and will expand on it but will need help to expand it. Can someone help me resolve this issue with lists and articles on folk dance in India? How about adding Dance Attire? --Anbu121 (talk me) 20:10, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey, as I added earlier, this article is about Dance in India in general. Dance in general doesn't have an attire or makeup. IMHO It is so varied across dance forms, regions, the use of masks, makeup etc that it can only be addressed well in specific articles pertaining to classical or folk or a specific dance like Bhangra. So, we shouldn't have a section on attire and makeup here. Noopur28 (talk) 20:21, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

The attire used in various dance forms of India are relatively similar to each other when compared to the attire used in other countries (If a person who does not know anything about India reads the article, he/she should come to know at least something about the kind of attire used). Can we have like a summary that covers the features of attire used in various dance forms. --Anbu121 (talk me) 20:57, 6 February 2012 (UTC) I am sorry this is very essentializing in nature and coming up with a "national costume for Indian dance" is just stupid and formulated. What will you write in a one paragraph summary? All men dancers in India don't wear Dhoti, they wear different kinds of 'trousers' (BUT, so do all men in India. They all wear some forom of trousers) and all women dancers don't wear a sari. I suggest you leave this best to specific articles on dances. It is easier to have a section on Bharata Natyam==>costume==>kanchipuram saree. Noopur28 (talk) 08:25, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

This book can be a good source of information. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 21:32, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Discussion over name

Shouldn't this article be Indian traditional dance instead? See Dance of China (dab) and Japanese traditional dance. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 08:05, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

And then there is one more example: Contemporary dance in Japan. Thanks. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 08:34, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Lists

This article is not a list, hence moving the following two lists here - kindly make List of Classical dancers and choreographers from India and Bollywood dancers and from India or similar, where they can be developed into a full-fledged article. Noted Indian dancers and choreographers

Classical dancers and choreographers
Bollywood dancers and choreographers

Change in pictures

The pictures have been changed since the start of COTM. Now they seem slightly misplaced and misleading. Can we please no keep changing them unless really needed? The Natraj statue image seems rather odd with the rest because of the color scheme. Noopur28 (talk) 09:03, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Help on AfD

Hello! The article Hasta Kosha is nominated for deletion and is being discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hasta Kosha. With recent COTM for this article, maybe participant editors would like to comment on AfD or improve the article. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 07:15, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Adding A Quiz

Could someone let me know if it is ok to add a link to http://www.cognibloom.com/question_banks/254-dance-forms-of-india. Although I added this to the external links section, one of Wikipedia editors (Dr. K) thought it was inappropriate and removed it. The reason why I added it was the following - when users take a quiz on a topic, they understand the topic better. Hence the link was added (and unfortunately removed). The link is not spam by any means. Instead, it will help the broad audience understand the topic better. If the editors can review the link and determine if there is value in adding such links to Wikipedia, it would be great. Looking forward to your response. Kiran cb (talk) 07:01, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your contributions. While a quiz can definitely be useful, they are not linked to from an encyclopedia. We only link to sites that are official (by the subject of the article), or that provide a greater encyclopedic understanding of the article. Links should also be from established sources that are considered reliable. You can check out Wikipedia:External links for more information on what links are acceptable, and what aren't. Hope this helps. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:16, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

The Two Aspects of Bharatanatyam

Hello,

I was hoping to add the two aspects of Bharatanatyam to this article. Nritta- The rhythmic aspect of the dance, including the movements of the feet, body and hands. Abhinaya- Dance conveyed through facial expressions. RaveenaRavishankar (talk) 02:11, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

@RaveenaRavishankar: Welcome to wikipedia. Your contributions are most welcome, but the added content must be from a reliable source and accompany one or more cites. Please see WP:RS and WP:CITE. Try adding something to this article or the Bharatanatyam article, others and I will collaborate with you to improve this article. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 10:38, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Types of Dances

I would suggest adding a few definitions to each of the different types of dances such as Kuchipudi. It will help readers understand the concept a little better. Also, I recommend that more examples be written to back up certain dances. Monica.e12 (talk) 22:09, 5 November 2016 (UTC)Monica

30000 year old Shiva Nataraja claim, etc

202.156.182.84: Welcome to wikipedia. Please do not remove sources and sourced content without proper explanation, as you did with your edits today. Much of what you added is POV-y, undue, does not verify. For example, it is fringe to claim in wikipedia voice that Shiva Nataraja is 30,000 year old idea. Such exceptional claims need high quality multiple scholarly RS that relate to dance / sculpture / painting. As another example, the Mathpal source on page 214 compares the Bhimbetka and Spanish Levant rock paintings and states "(...) subjects include honey collecting, dance and animals and small creatures". Mathpal is not stating Bhimbetka depicts "dances". The list is long and I have reverted you per WP:BRD. Please discuss your changes. Further, if you copy within wikipedia, as your edits suggest you likely did, you must mention in your edit summary which article you are copying from, as admin Diannaa explained on your talk page. Your cooperation is requested, Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:20, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

Unencyclopedic Style

From the "Dance in Bollywood Film" section:

  • Often in movies, the actors don't sing the songs themselves that they dance too, but have another artist sing in the background. For an actor to sing in the song is unlikely but not rare. The dances in Bollywood can range from slow dancing, to a more upbeat hip hop style dance. The dancing itself is a fusion of all dance forms. It could be Indian classical, Indian folk dance, belly dancing, jazz, hip hop and everything else you can imagine.

This is really poorly written. I'm not even sure it needs to be in the article.

Why are dance names capitalised?

Why are all of the Indian dance names capitalised in running text? (See Template:Dance in India for more examples.) This runs counter to MOS:DANCECAPS. If you care please discuss this here. —  AjaxSmack  15:48, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
