Microcotton
Can someone add information on what microcotton is, and how it performs compared to Pima and Egyptian cotton? Wsmss (talk) 19:02, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
ITC external link to trade data
Hello everyone, I am working for the International Trade Centre (ITC). I would like to propose the addition of an external link that could lead directly to the specific product trade data held by ITC. I have seen that most of the actual links to trade database are outdated. Theefore, I would like you to consider this link under the WP:ELYES #3 prescriptions. Moreover, the reliability and the pertinence of this link can be supported by the following facts: 1) ITC is part of the United Nations 2) No registration is required 3) Trade data (imports/exports) are regularly updated 4) The link gives direct access to the trade database referring to the specific product 5) The addition of a link to reliable data could provide an appropriate contribution to section of the article related to international trade. Thank you for your attention.Divoc (talk) 17:42, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Varieties of Cotton
We need more information on varieties of cotton — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.138.120.38 (talk) 13:22, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
Tangüis cotton
This section is poorly written. The last sentence refers to " 225,000 bales that year", however the last year mentioned is 1911, and the reference applies to the 1990's. The preceding sentence is likely incorrectly written as well. Also, the "Cultivation" section apparently applies to all cotton, not just Tangüis cotton.
I'm going to remove the Tangüis cotton section, someone with knowledge of this should correct it and reinstate it. It might belong as a separate page with a link. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ggpauly (talk • contribs) 19:35, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Long staple vs short staple cotton

Plant Life Cycle
There is nothing about the plant life cycle:
http://www.cottonsjourney.com/Storyofcotton/page3.asp
even this page does not say how many years cottons live. NOR does it say how the seeds get from the plant to self-seed the next year. Perhaps some one who knows can add this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.244.90.81 (talk) 12:37, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Water Consumption
There's really not anything about the water footprint of cotton. Apparently, according to WWF, it takes between 7000 - 29 000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton. This information really should be added. Agree, disagree?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.24.133.58 (talk) 18:25, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
cambric/chambray
typo: "cambric" was written where "chambray" was intended, possibly because chambray is discussed only on the cambric page. Both fabrics include shirtings, but cambric is suitable for shirts to be worn with evening dress and chambray is suitable for shirts to be worn with pick and shovel. The reference to "blue collar" makes it clear that the latter is meant.
98.206.86.187 (talk) 02:37, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- our cambric article doesn't seem to agree with your distinction - saying only that chambray differed by being colored. Rmhermen (talk) 01:04, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
archives
Not to ruffle everyones feathers but none of my comments seem to have made it to the archive. And the most recent one I think was posted yesterday. I simply wanted to know the strength of cotton compared to hemp. I mean maybe no one else cares or sees it as a necessary comparison but I can't help but feel that my voice is being surpressed. Any explanations for why my comments did not make it into the archive? No one ever was able to answer my question scientifically either. (they did provide useful information though so thanks.) [not that that information is on here anymore either] Dracoshempemporium (talk) 20:00, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

enslaved African Americans
From the United States section:
- "In the United States, Southern cotton provided capital for the continuing development of the North. The cotton produced by enslaved African Americans not only helped the South, but also enriched Northern merchants. Much of the Southern cotton was trans-shipped through northern ports."
Is it factual that only enslaved African Americans produced cotton in the South? This is an encyclopedia after all, not a Marxist political treatise. Unless of course that's what you want, in which case it would be nice if you were honest about it. Dynasteria (talk) 05:51, 11 July 2017 (UTC)

China and India
How come? It is written here: The five leading exporters of cotton in 2011 are (1) the United States but on the chart on the right it clearly shows that China is number 1 and India number 2 cotton producers in 2010, 2012 and 2014, almost twice that of America. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.177.2.232 (talk) 08:10, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

"Cotton bolls discovered in a cave near Tehuacán, Mexico, have at first been dated to as early as 5500 BC, but this date has been challenged."
Please remove "at first" from this sentence. I don't know if it means that other dates have been suggested (in which case it's redundant to the end of the sentence), or if it means that this is the earliest date (in which case it's redundant to "as early as"), but either way it's not needed. 208.95.51.53 (talk) 13:25, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Yield, revenue, cyclic behaviour MIA
The cotton cultivation section probably should be expanded to cover yields, over a representative range of historic and geographic parameters. In wouldn't hurt to touch on revenues (per acre, more likely) though I know this is difficult to normalize, especially for historical data. Finally, the cyclical nature of the crop should be addressed, as this is a universal problem in agriculture. 12 Years a Slave features a two-year drought as a major plot point. Was that a Biblical anomaly (as depicted through an unreliable psychological lens), or merely a plantation owner badly reconciled to well-known agricultural realities, and looking for something/someone else to blame? — MaxEnt 21:57, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
Cotton Lisle
The phrase "Lisle is composed of two strands that have each been twisted an extra twist per inch than ordinary yarns..." is not quite standard English. Try this: "Lisle is composed of two strands that have each been twisted one more twist per inch than ordinary yarns..." or "Lisle is composed of two strands that have each been twisted one twist per inch more than ordinary yarns..." -- we say "one more than" but not "extra than." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.240.209.247 (talk) 23:14, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

Let’s ditch “Old World” and “New World”
It’s Eurocentric and uninformative. Why not say cotton was independently domesticated in Asia and South America? It has the benefit of being more specific and more inclusive. Danderozier (talk) 03:32, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

"Genome" section needs revision and updating
The "Genome" section at the bottom of the article is not only too technical, but it is about 10 years out of date. Numerous cotton species have been sequenced multiple times since the bulk of the section was written in 2010 or thereabouts. This review in Frontiers in Plant Science from 2020 covers this progress quite nicely. Unfortunately, I don't have the background in plant genetics to accurately rewrite this section and do it justice, so I'm putting out this call for help! Edit Request
“ Cotton continues to be picked by hand in developing countries[79] and in Xinjiang, China, by forced labor.[80] Xinjiang produces over 20% of the world's cotton.[81]” should be moved to the “fair trade” section of the article where forced labor is already discussed. The harvesting section should instead be expanded with information on how cotton is picked by hand or why it is. I’m not sure why this information is in this section.
