Suviana and Brasimone lakes regional park

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The regional park of the Suviana and Brasimone lakes is a protected natural area established in 1995 which rises on the Bolognese Apennines, in Emilia-Romagna, on the border with Tuscany. The area is located around two large artificial basins built starting from the early twentieth century for hydroelectric purposes, Lake Suviana, surrounded by a thick pine forest, and the Brasimone basin, with grassy banks.

The regional park entirely contains the Suviana and Brasimone Lakes site of community interest (IT40500020), which covers an area of 1902 hectares (4,700 acres) within the protected area.[1]

Territory[edit]

The territory of the park is enclosed between the valleys of the Brasimone and Limentra Orientale streams, the main tributaries of the two lakes; however, the southern border of the park is on the right bank of the Pavana basin, in the Western Limentra valley.

Flora and fauna[edit]

The park is covered by a multiple and abundant forest: there are mainly artificially planted pine forests, as well as oak, ash, chestnut and spruce forests, where various species of deer, roe deer, wild boar and fallow deer are protected. In the old chestnut woods, thick enough to offer the possibility of nesting, there are avian species such as the great spotted woodpecker and the green woodpecker

Accommodation[edit]
