:::Thank you BronHiggs. I think that Dr.K. is playing the card of copyvio just to obstruct the process. I think of that because he made some claims in the past for the proposed text such as uni prof French David(historian) is not a suitable source, he claimed that there is a novel style prose in my text, he made NPOV claims and keeps throwing "policies" in order to justify a rejection of my text. So I would like to ask if there someone third who can jump in the article and find out if his copyvio and CLOP claims are valid. Because I think they are not- I think they are just a playing card. I have changed the text and summarised it dramatically. I do have concerns though, ie when I am listing the death toll or the numbers of house-bombings, I think that is not CLOP, numbers are not creative elements. ps-as for mentoring, I think Dr.K. needs mentoring if he thinks that David French is not RS plus using the title of policies just to provoce other users (ie see how he uses WP:WEASEL in the talk page of EOKA). ::::He's not playing the "copyvio card". He's noting that you copied text from other sources. You can't do that. You're supposed to write, from scratch, your own wholly unique and fresh text, and then cite the original source you used to get the information (but not the text) from. It is plainly clear that you aren't writing your own wholly original text. There are enough examples here of taking someone else's writing and passing it off as your own to establish that you are doing it. What we're telling you is stop that. Don't do it again. Also, since you made the mess, we're asking you to help us find the problems so they can be fixed. It was you that took other people's words and tried to pass them off as your own, Dr. K. didn't do that, you did. He's just asking you to tell him all of the times you did that, not force him to play "gotcha". This isn't a game that you get to "win" if you can hide your misdeeds, and "lose" if you admit to it. We're just trying to write a good encyclopedia, and taking other people's writing and copying it over to here is causing a problem. --<span style="color:#009">Jayron</span><b style="color:#090">32</b> 18:16, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Oedipus Rex article: External link to a website page containing a pdf of a table

A table that summarizes the scholarly debates about Oedipus Rex is an appendix to a book I recently published. I propose adding to the "External Links" section a link to the page of my website that contains the pdf link to this table. I believe the table would be extremely useful to all those interested in the play and its many controversies. The table is neutral, being based entirely on quotations from scholars who have written about Oedipus Rex over many years. But because the link is to my own website, I want to make sure I'm not crossing any lines. I raised this issue in the Talk page for the Oedipus Rex article a week or so ago and so far no one has objected. But, again, I want to make sure that this addition won't in any way degrade the quality and reliability of Wikipedia. There is no question in my mind that the link would add significant value to the article. The question is whether that benefit is outweighed by the fact that the link would also bring my book to the reader's attention, violating the rule against conflicts of interest. Please advise. I don't want to do anything inappropriate. Thank you.

Sources

Hello,

I am working on a page about a journalist that got killed. I am using 7 sources and for each section I am using a little bit of every source. I am having to translate from Spanish to English. Is it possible for me to just include every source for each section? Or at least two sources per section? I also do not know how to do that. Any suggestion?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lgarcia2018 (talkcontribs) 00:49, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Lgarcia2018: I'm not sure I fully understand the question. But each statement should ideally be cited to a reference that verifies it. I may be misreading what you're saying, but it sounds like you find this a bit tedious. If you're going to be reusing sources, you have a few options to make it easier for yourself. The easiest is described at WP:REFNAME. For books, I sometimes use sfn. This lets you cite different pages from the same book. This cuts down the amount of repetitive citing you have do. Change ARTICLE NAME

Hi , I would like change the name of the article from "Berjaya University College of Hospitality" to "BERJAYA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE" .

URL : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berjaya_University_College_of_Hospitality

How that could be done? Perhaps the URL too.

Please advise. Thanks. @PRComm BerjayaUC:

@PRComm BerjayaUC: Before you get that far, you need to change your username, as your current username is not permitted per the username policy. Your username must indicate that an individual is using it. It need not be your real name, it can be a nickname. If you want to indicate your association with the university, a name in the format of "YourName of BerjayaUC" would be acceptable. You may either create a new account, or visit WP:CHU and use one of the two methods there to request a username change.
You will also need to review and comply with the conflict of interest and paid edting policies, the latter of which is required by Wikipedia's Terms of Use. 331dot (talk) 09:07, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've posted information on your user talk page about this, it includes a link to where you can change your name as well. 331dot (talk) 09:09, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I have moved the page as their website (unfortunately the only source in the article) does not append the "of Hospitality". Feel free to revert. @PRComm BerjayaUC: I urge you to take 331dot's advice regarding your username, the conflict of interest guideline and the paid editing policy. – Teratix 09:15, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

IFNOBOXES

In my everyday editing, I see these monstrosities all over the project. They are awful things, ruining the appearance of any page they appear on. As such, my personal p[olicy has been to ignore them totally, as unimportant, and let other editors deal with them. They are normally unsourced, and this appears to be acceptable, as they are usually allowed to remain. Seems silly to me, so my question is - Should Infoboxes be held to the same standards of sourcing as the rest of the project, and can I legitimately remove unsourced content from them? -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 10:33, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

• If there is content in them that isn't sourced anywhere else in the article, then certainly it's acceptable to remove it (or tag it with a cn). Especially if they're BLPs. Black Kite (talk) 10:38, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"...monstrosities", "They are awful things, ruining the appearance of any page they appear on", "ignore them totally, as unimportant". Yep.
"Should Infoboxes be held to the same standards of sourcing as the rest of the project, and can I legitimately remove unsourced content from them?" You bet! HiLo48 (talk) 10:46, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
• (edit conflict) Yeah, lots of them are crap and contain crapper, but they play a similar role to the lead (supposedly), in that they reflect and sum up what's already in the article. For the rest of it, per Black Kite, as usual (and now HiLo of course). ——SerialNumber54129 10:49, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:INFOBOXREF - X201 (talk) 10:51, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this. Following on from that, how do we decide if "the information is obvious"? -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 10:59, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
An example of "obvious" would be something like "Actor" as occupation when a massive great part of the article is about their acting career. In such a case it would be somewhat pointless to add another source actually saying "they were an actor". I don't think this really applies very often though. Black Kite (talk) 11:05, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On a complete tangent, some of you may be amused with the discussion underway at Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board#Infoboxes in by-election articles. HiLo48 (talk) 10:55, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

INews is the article that prompted this question. I see an interesting new edit very recently. -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 11:11, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you never want to see an infobox, you can hide them by adding
.infobox {display:none}

to your common.css Vexations (talk) 11:18, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Again, thanks, this would improve my enjoyment when reading articles. My concern however, is with the content, usually unsourced, of infoboxes. -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 11:22, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the awful 14-line slogan field at the start of the infobox to just give the current slogan on one line.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:35, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
One thing to keep in mind that infoboxes are under discretionary sanctions. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 14:03, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that, thanks. -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 07:58, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

JOHN HAGEE MINISTRIES

My concern is about John Hagee Ministries on TBN. We have watched his show for years and find it very inspirational. Lately his show is only re-runs that we have seen over and over,we still watch him, but we would like to see some NEW SERMONS!!!. You also have more ads on the show every few minutes which is annoying, which only leaves about 10 minutes for his sermon. WHAT HAS HAPPENED to this NETWORK, this is very disappointing!!!! Please show his recent sermons and not re-runs that we have seen over and over!!! Thank you, Sarah Pleasants. I would like a reply!!

Hey Sarah. Although we have may have an article covering a topic, Wikipedia has no official connection with the subjects it covers, but only hosts articles written by volunteer. I'm afraid if you have an issue with this network or this television show, you will need to contact them rather than Wikipedia. GMGtalk 14:58, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments

This page was deleted in 2012, according to the (deletion log). I tried last Friday to re-create/edit the page but it was blocked by (materialscientist) one of the editors, saying that it was an advertisement or personal business, (which was not allowed) I do not understand why, as I do see many Companies listed on wiki.

All I am trying to do is edit this page and link it to the already created council of Governments (COG) page and Regional Council of Governments, etc. This is not a for profit business it is a government organization. There are many of these pages already on wiki. Please help?

Hello, user. I'm afraid you have made a number of mistakes, because you are unfamiliar with what Wikipedia is and how it works. I will try and explain some of them.
• First, you created a user account with the name of an organisation. That is not allowed: all accounts are required to be individual (you don't have to use your own name: I do, but many people use aliases), and must not suggest that they are being used on behalf of an organisation. You have been blocked mainly for that reason, though also because you seem to be here in order to promote your company, not to improve the encyclopaedia. If you wish to join us, I suggest you abandon that (blocked) account, and create a new account that is personal to you.
• Secondly, you are making the common, but wrong, assumption that Wikipedia is a place for people or companies to tell the world about themselves. It is not. That is what we mean by promotion (it is not restricted to commercial enterprises) and it is strictly forbidden everywhere in Wikipedia. Yes, we have many articles about companies. They are not (or should not be) written by the company or its associates, and should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with the company have chosen to publish about it. A company has no control, initially or later on, over the content of an article about it.
• It follows that an article on a company (or any other subject) is possible only if there is sufficient independent material published about it. The Wikipedia jargon for this is that the company is or is not notable. If it isn't, there is no point in anybody spending time trying to write an article about it.
• If you company is notable, (by this definition, not any other) then there can be an article about it. You are discouraged from writing such an article because your conflict of interest is likely to make it hard for you to write it in a sufficiently neutral way. In addition, if you are an employee, or in any way paid by the company, you must declare this fact: see WP:PAID.
• Writing a new article is hard, and I always advise new editors to spend some weeks or months improving some of our millions of inadequate articles before they try it. In any case, read your first article before you do try it.
• Finally, you tried to create the article on your user page. This is not what user pages are for: if you create one, it is a place for you to share whatever information you choose about you personally as a Wikipedia article.
As I am not an admin, I can't see the deleted content; but the deleting Admin Materialscientist evidently thought the content did not meet our requirements for neutrality.
As you see, there are several obstacles to doing what you are apparently trying to do, and I suspect that your best plan is to give up on trying to use Wikipedia to tell the world about your company. If you would like to help us improve the encyclopaedia (not just tell the world about your company) you are welcome to join the throng of Wikipedia editors. --ColinFine (talk) 17:46, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dividing lists into two columns

I am working on User:Huldra/Robinson, where I try to identify the place mentioned by Robinson and Smith in their 1841 books.

Now, take p. 133: the places under "Esh-Shaghur" are divided in two columns (second column start with Bi'ina).

How can I get two columns in my text in User:Huldra/Robinson? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Huldra (talk) 21:18, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean by "jump to the middle". If you click "next page" right above or below the list of images then you get the next page of images in alphabetical order. It has a url like https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:PD-Bain&filefrom=%22Pop%22+Corey+LCCN2014689020.tif#mw-category-media, where %22 is an encoded quotation mark character " which comes before letters. You can manually change the filefrom parameter, e.g. to start at P: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:PD-Bain&filefrom=P. If you place commons:Template:CategoryTOC on the category page then you get a box with direct links to each letter. The category has around 84,000 images. I don't know a way to jump to the middle image number 42,000. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:56, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Find out, regarding the meter, why it's a nuclear hazard. What is the material inside it, what is the strength of that source, and how is it housed? Then talk to your government importing department and see what their rules are. You may find (if the device is new) that its manufacturer can help - most governments will be far easier to deal with if you say, "This is a MoistureCo 500 meter, here is their shipping specification." than if you try to explain to the department, "Well, it's a machine, it has a source, I think it's about this powerful" in a more vague way. Bureaucracies respect paperwork.
You will also need to talk to the shipper. Generally this sort of equipment is fairly easy to transport, provided that they are notified beforehand.
There are internation rules, explort licences etc. to control nuclear proliferation. However these rules are sensible: most sources used for measurement are so small that they are outside these regulations. However if you are in a country which is on an international watch list (has your government annoyed America lately?) such as North Korea or Cuba, then there may be a simple ban in place. PNG should be no problem though. If you ship through Australia, then the Australian customs people are fanatical about contraband coming into the country, but are helpful if you are honest and open with them and declare it in advance. recover account goinsgarrett618

on my phone i want access to my wikipedia account. I have tried several times. you M.F. done piss me off. either you contact me or i delete my account. immediately!!!!!. -i need to be able to log in. i forgot password. need assistant!!!!! damnit!!!

I've had problems with passwords on my phone in the past. It's worth checking on a standard keyboard in case there is some layout difference that is affecting the typing of your password. There's no need to get upset. If you have lost the login information but had provided an email address, you can recover your login information; see Help:Reset password for details. If you had not entered an e-mail address when signing up for your account, there are a few rather technical ways of recovering a lost password that require either AutoWikiBrowser or a committed identity; see Help:Logging in#What if I forget the password? for details. If you don't have any of those either, there is no way for Wikipedia to recover lost login information, and you will have to create a new account. You can then link on your talk page to your old account and explain what happened. Dbfirs 08:49, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help with user changing a name space page something completely different?

User Merkeig was making a number of unrelated edits to Lhotka u Radnic that caught my attention from Recent Changes and I was going to revert but then got an error as, while I was reverting, they moved the article to Rules Of Renovation (which doesn't follow naming convention, if I understand it correctly), un-commented their promotional paragraphs (with citations), and left me very confused.

Is this as bad as I think it is? Assuming Good Faith, is there still a copy of the orginal article that they were just working from? What's the course of action here? --Cheers! Elfabet (talk) 12:16, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The history is still there, but it will need an admin to restore the history and maintain the attribution. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:28, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is a re-creation of a page that failed a deletion vote in May - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rules_of_Renovation. (Wikipedia mirror Revolvy has the text from before the deletion, which seems to be basically what has been put in the new article.) I assume the bizarre method of re-creation was in a belief this would attract less notice than creating a new page? TSP (talk) 12:31, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, TSP, what next steps can we take to get this taken care of? Should I just revert to the original text - or are you implying that won't fix the name? What's the best info to leave on the user's talk page to broach this? Elfabet (talk) 13:47, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately because the user has edited the redirect at Lhotka u Radnic, you can't just move it back. I've reverted the content, and put a request on Wikipedia:Requested moves to request an admin move it back. I guess on the user's talk page one of us should just explain what has been done and why; that this is a bad thing to do, and any repeat of anything similar is likely to result in a ban. An admin may decide this is obviously malicious enough to be ban-worthy in itself. TSP (talk) 14:23, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Elfabet: I've left a message on the user's talk page, as the page has now been restored. TSP (talk) 14:58, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question about disambiguation pages

I have a question about disambiguation pages here on Wikipedia. Is there a rule or policy about the following issue? When we list the items on a disambiguation page, are we supposed to include/exclude a grammatical article (such as "a" or "the")? So, just for an example, let’s look at the page Duh. Which of the following should the very first entry be?

• DUH (band), California-based noise and alternative rock outfit

or

• DUH (band), a California-based noise and alternative rock outfit

Also, where are the rules and policies for disambiguation pages? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 13:33, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Signature

A user keeps asking me to fix my signature, but I do not know how. Can anyone tell me?--NeoBatfreak (talk) 04:26, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

To change your signature, go to your preferences at the top right of the page, scroll down past the user profile and internationalisation sections, and you will find a field where you can modify your signature. To fix your signature so it links correctly to your user and user talk pages as required, copy this code: --NeoBatfreak (talk) into the signature field, check the box which says "treat as wiki markup", and save your preferences at the bottom of the page. For more information, see Help:Signature. – Teratix 04:38, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
An easier way to get a valid signature is to leave the Signature field blank at Special:Preferences and have no checkmark at "Treat the above as wiki markup". This is the default. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:23, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your signature was correct in your question, so you don't need to change anything. You had obviously cured the earlier problem. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:11, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a report of the use of a particular template in a specific time period with editing user

Is it possible to create/get a report of the use of the a particular template, Template:Geobox/type/river, in new articles (or the first addition of the template to an article) for a specific time period (say since January 1 , 2018) and the user names of the editors who created/edited those new articles with the template/to ad the template? I note the Geobox river template has a tracking category, Category:Geobox usage tracking for river type. Thanks. --papageno (talk) 05:22, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Would Wikipedia:WikiBlame help with this? --Jayron32 16:26, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Qui1che I wrote a query that will tell you the number of times a Geobox template has been transcluded on an article. https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/30789 It appears that there are no articles that use . As you can see at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Geobox/type/river there are pages that transclude that template, but they're not articles in mainspace.

Vexations (talk) 19:37, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Jayron32 and Vexations for your replies. Given that Geobox river is used on some 15,000+ articles, and I have created several hundred myself (eg Malotte Creek), perhaps we need to try a different approach. Every time the template is included on a article, the tracking category Category:Geobox usage tracking for river type automatically gets added to the article. Is there a way to know when that category has been added to an article for a given time period, and to get a report of those changes? Regards. --papageno (talk) 05:08, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with logging in.

I took valuable time to edit your article on Walter Bosshard, Swiss photographer, then logged into my account only to find you keep rejecting my password. This is very frustrating, since I refuse to change my password--have too many already, and went through several tests to prove I'm not a robot when I tried to create a new account. What to do? Thanks, PC. 2602:306:CF09:D460:115C:72D5:A14:1311 (talk) 4:15 am, Today (UTC+0)

Hi Paul, sorry you are having problems. If you provided an e-mail address when you created your account, then you can recover your password. See Help:Reset password for details. It's possible that a different keyboard layout, or a changed space or capital letter is preventing your password from being accepted, so do try different combinations, and maybe a different keyboard. I've removed your e-mail address from public view since you don't it collected by spambots. Ask again if you are still having problems. I note that the article Walter Bosshard has not been edited for two years, so I assume you were using a word processor or a text editor. That is probably not a good idea. It is better to make your edits in small steps in the live article, and provide edit summaries. Dbfirs 08:32, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Another possible reason for password rejection is entering a wrong username. If your account has email enabled (we cannot tell without knowing the username) and you get a temporary password at Special:PasswordReset then you can set your preferred password at Special:Preferences after logging in. "Paper print" entry: the wrong title

How to change the title of an entry to make it correct?

The entry entitled "Paper print" only discusses the use of still images printed on paper to copyright motion pictures shot on movie film in the first two decades of motion picture history.

The term "paper print" refers to any (photographic) image printed onto paper. A still photograph produced by taking a processed negative and printing the positive image on paper is a "paper print." When a motion picture negative was used to print each frame of the film/movie onto paper (whether a card containing strips of frame, or a 35mm wide roll of paper) is also a "paper print." But it's only 1 kind of paper print.

The vast majority of paper prints have been still photographs. The paper print process was important for copyrighting movies ca. 1893-1910s and after. But an entry on "paper print" should not be exclusively about motion pictures. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Streible (talkcontribs) 01:10, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to discuss such things is the talk page of the article: in this case, Talk:Paper print. Maproom (talk) 11:23, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Changing IP address to User Name

While editing the article Citizen science I made an edit without having logged in to my usual account, as I had forgotten I was not logged in. So the IP address is shown on the editing page for that article, whereas I would prefer it to be my usual User name.

Is there a way to change that IP address to my usual account name and then delete the IP address account (which is a mistake basically)? There has been an edit since then by another user which reversed my former edit, though that is not the reason I wish to change the IP address to usual name: it just might cause more confusion. I don't want the IP account to be regarded as a sockpuppet for me. Perhaps a redirect? Richard Nowell (talk) 10:54, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How do I make a chart?

I would like to make a chart for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild speedrunning. I would like to put in the dates, category of the run, the name, the time gotten, and the source. That article does not have any mention of speed running. If you're planning on putting the chart in that article the best place to start would be to hold a discussion to see if there's consensus for it. It could save you a lot of wasted hours because creating a chart will take a big chunk of time. - X201 (talk) 15:52, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio and endless discussions

Ok here is the situation. I have proposed a text to be inserted in an article. An editor denies the insertions as he claims there are copyvio and WP:CLOP problems. When I ask him to point them out, he refuses as he says it is not his burden. I have modified my text several times, and other users contributed to the modifications. I have opened a section in the talk page of the article to discuss copyvio claims but he does not participate. So...my question is: does he have the burden to provide evidence of his claim or should I keep changing the wording, paraphrasing and so on, in order to satisfy him?Cinadon36 (talk) 17:57, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On what source is the text based? Ruslik_Zero 20:00, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply Ruslik. This one.Cinadon36 (talk) 20:07, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
• This is WP:FORUM because the OP has asked similar questions in a discussion thread at the talkpage of Diannaa in the section User_talk:Diannaa#Copyvio_concerns and at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Copyright_Cleanup#Suggested_text_in_EOKA_article. Since the OP is a prolific edit-changer, the version where the copyvios existed is at this link. It appears that the OP copies full sentences from the book and then he cannot account as to why or how he copied them and s/he cannot retrace his/her steps to find the copyvio sentences, choosing instead to badger other editors, in multiple fora, to point these copyvios to him/her. Please see relevant discussions at talk:Dianna and talk:EOKA. Dr. K. 02:11, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Still missing the argument. The question is whether you can play the copyvio card without providing evidence.Cinadon36 (talk) 04:51, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, you are missing the argument. If someone, you in this case, can copy a whole long sentence from a book and needs someone, me, to tell him, and he, meaning you, does not know how to find it by himself/herself, then there is a very high probability that many more copyvios are to be found in the edits of such person. So an investigation is a very reasonable proposition. Dr. K. 05:08, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will wait someone else to answer my question. It is very simple. Cinadon36 (talk) 05:11, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is not a simple question. Your said: So...my question is: does he have the burden to provide evidence of his claim or should I keep changing the wording, paraphrasing and so on, in order to satisfy him? Your comment indicates that you do not know how to spot copyvios, even if it is you who is creating them. Trying to fix them by yourself, under these circumstances, is impossible. All I am trying to say is, you need supervision from someone who has the time and knowledge to guide you. So when you propose an edit on a talkpage, your mentor would make sure it is copyvio-free. This mentorship should last for as long as you get an idea how not to copypaste from books, and more importantly, how to spot copyvios of your own making. If I don't have time to vet your edits at EOKA, this doesn't mean that I am trying to delay you. It also doesn't mean that your proposed edit is copyvio-free. In fact, in all likelihood, there may be more copyvios in that text. So, you could ask a mentor, or a copyvio expert, to give you their opinion. That would speed up things a lot. Dr. K. 05:41, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps I can offer some help? The general rule, as used in universities and colleges, is that to paraphrase some prose, you must change 80% of the words in the original. You cannot, for example, take a slab of text and then replace every 3rd or 4th word with a synonym, and claim that it is somehow different from the original. Copyvio can exist not only in wording, but also in structure. So, for example, if you take a series of headings and copy them exactly, while substituting some original prose around those headings, it still constitutes a form of plagiarism - because the structure has been borrowed and requires some sort of acknowledgement. Copyright violations are relatively easy to detect. Wikipedia has a tool for this. But a simple visual comparison of the original and the 'borrowed' passage soon reveals how close they are. There is a raft of more complex copyright rules surrounding artwork. Copyvio is a serious business - it can lead to heavy fines for both the person who breached copyright laws, and also for any organisation that supports it or turns a blind eye to it. So, it is not just some silly thing that Wikipedia cooked up to annoy editors and make their lives more difficult, but is something that can be legally enforced in all countries that are signatory to the copyright conventions. Authors, editors and publishers have a personal responsibility to ensure that their work is free from potential copyright problems. BronHiggs (talk) 06:15, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think you would be the perfect mentor for Cinadon. Thank you Bron. Dr. K. 06:22, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @BronHiggs:. Cinadon36 (talk)
He's not playing the "copyvio card". --Jayron32 18:16, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Once more, I am trying to pose a question and have a decent conversation with a third party and Dr.K. constantly fills the discussion page with all kinds of accusations (distraction technique).Cinadon36 (talk) 09:35, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is a new proposed text,[4] hopefully copyvio-free (version 5) for anyone who wants to help sort this out. I have made mistakes, unquestionably, but I tried to fix them. Dr.K. is presenting quotes from previous version. Thanks. Cinadon36 (talk) 10:18, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You haven't just "made mistakes", you have made a lot of personal attacks and accusations of bad faith. You should be thanking Dr.K. Khirurg (talk) 17:44, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite archaeological site forms

I found the following in a source that I can cite "One Prehistoric Site, The Hawthorne Rails-to-Trails Site, The Florida Master Site File contains one Archaeological Site Form for the City of Hawthorne (AL 2562) date 10/90. This site was discovered during the Gainesville to Hawthorne Rails-to-Trails Survey. The site was evaluated as eligible for National Registry, significant as part of a district, and significant at the local level. The recommendation was to save the site."

In the article I am expanding, I wanted to include what the archaeological site contained so I contacted an Archaeological Data Analyst for the Florida Master Site File at the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State. The analyst sent me the site file details report which does include more information about the site and its contents (like what culture, what type of site, and what artifacts). However, I cannot publish this document because it contains the location of the site. The analyst had this to say "archaeological site locations are exempt from the public records law, under Florida Statute 267.135. Please do not publish, distribute, post on the internet or otherwise disseminate this data. Any interested parties should contact the Site File directly." More querying of what I could do resulted in that all the information is public except the location of the site. So I can't upload the file to commons (or wikidata) so I can cite it in the article [unless, I suppose, redact the location].

Now that you know the history, what is the best course of action here? How do I cite the site file details report?

Thank you. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 19:47, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The location is just data. It is not protected by copyright. So, it can be published if known. Ruslik_Zero 19:59, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ruslik0, data or not, it is protected under law. I am not sure how they would prosecute me but nonetheless, I understand the reason for it and I choose not to publish the document given to me. So, I ask again, how do I cite the "Florida Master Site File"? PopularOutcasttalk2me! 20:16, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think that any law can prohibit you from publishing this information unless you signed a legally binding non-disclosure agreement. Ruslik_Zero 20:30, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ruslik0, a document at the State of Florida exists and it meets WP:VERIFY, WP:SOURCEACCESS. Anyone can call or write and get the information. I want to cite a document stored at the Florida Master Site File in the State of Florida. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 21:07, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to try to use Template:Cite archive. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 21:22, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure that cite archive is the correct template – as I understand it, that template is to be used to cite something in an institution's archival holdings (some library's holdings of famous person Joe Blog's papers during the time that he as an example author at en.wiki, etc). What you describe sounds to me more like a government report or paper somewhat akin to the National Park Service's Register of Historic Places (example). These are public documents that often omit the location of archaeological sites. There is no requirement, none, that sources cited in Wikipedia articles must be available on the internet; it is sufficient that the source has been made available to the public, that you have seen it with your own eyes, that I can, if I choose, go to an appropriate Florida government office and obtain a copy or see the original for myself.
Were it me, I suspect that I would use cite report or citation to cite this document.

Trappist the monk, Thanks so much. I did make an attempt with cite archive mostly because it had fields for the information I needed to convey. I will try to make it fit in citation or cite report. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 23:30, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@PopularOutcast:citation templates are just convienience tools. You are not required to use a template. If it's not doing what you want, don't try to force it, but instead just format your ref the way you think it should be formatted, just using wikimarkup. Put a comment in there to explain that there was no template that did the job. If your solution may be preferable in other places in Wikipedia, then the otehr alternative is to create a new template. -Arch dude (talk) 03:36, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude, hmm, never even considered that. I don't have a strong knowledge on how to cite things for a bibliography or footnotes (there's always some prescribed structure) but that should be easy to look up. Thanks for the suggestion. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 13:11, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Check if articles use a template

Is there any tool that allows to see what templates are transcluded on each page? For example, I want to see how many times Template:Infobox spacecraft is used in x articles. The transculsion count tool at wmflabs only give numbers, and I want pages. Is there anything for this? Thanks. EggOfReason (talk) 00:39, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EggOfReason, there is [5] or [6] Vexations (talk) 01:06, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly what I wanted. Thanks, both of you! EggOfReason (talk) 16:46, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please place the leaning forward italics over the words The Times UK in reference number 112. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srbernadette (talkcontribs) 06:45, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template:cite web, & the more appropriate Template:cite news, will tell you which parameters are rendered in italics. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:44, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of article/Deleting part of the article

There is an article which I came across as a user - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Jessup_(artist) - wherein image projected on the page is not that of the artist. I got in touch with the person - Paul Jessup - and asked him to check, and he confirmed that it is not him but a TV actor named Ben Nathan Jones. He also went on to say that he did not want a Wikipedia page and why wasn't he asked about it. Then he went through the page and said that much of the info is from his website and case being discussed under the 'Controversy' section is akin to slander since he is just one of the board members and hence is not directly responsible for the accounting and taxes.

He is requesting me to delete the page totally saying he does not want it. Is there a way for speedy deletion that can help achieve this? I can prove that the pic is not his because I have his real pic.

Thanks in advance, Vinvibes (talk) 12:12, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the picture. The material in the 'Controversy' section is supported by a reliable reference. If you can say which of the material in the article is copied from his web site, it will be removed, as a copyright violation. But we won't delete the article just because he wants it deleted – we don't need the subject's permission for an article on Paul Jessup, any more than we do for an article on Napoleon. Maproom (talk) 12:57, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Maproom - This is what he says about the information in the Controversy section - It is a company that I was 1 of 3 directors of - I did not file company Vat Reclaims the accountant was responsible for that. I have been on the board of many companies during the past 30 years. It is The Great British Teddy Bear Co which is my family Company and it is not mentioned in the press release source, what is mentioned in Paragon which I have virtually nothing to do with.

I feel it is a case of misrepresentation of information here. He has one family business which is philanthropic and well-known, and the press release referenced under Controversy highlights another business, namely paragon, in which he has a very limited role to play. So highlighting it under a separate section on his page is a little unfair.

Your opinion? Vinvibes (talk) 16:06, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Vinvibes. The Wikipedia article is about Paul Jessup, not about the Teddy Bear Company. The claim in the section is supported by the source: I agree that the section should be written more clearly, but it should certainly not be removed. Further discussion should take place on the article's Talk page rather than here. --ColinFine (talk) 16:20, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ColinFine...yes, so maybe editing it to bring out the fact that he has limited role to play in Paragon and that it has nothing to do with his main business could serve the purpose? On the talk page of the article, the query will draw the same response, isn't it? Will start a thread none the less. Many thanks, Vinvibes (talk) 16:53, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have now rewritten (and retitled) the section, Vinvibes. It does now name the company which made the false claims, but it also mentions, as in the source, that he was sole director. You are welcome to edit it, but the source does not bear out the claim that he had a limited role in Paragon. --ColinFine (talk) 16:56, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you ColinFineat least it distinguishes between the 2 firms now. Many thanks for your help, Vinvibes (talk) 17:14, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
