- 21:2921:29, 20 November 2023 diff hist +7 m French phonology Our dictionaries indeed show the two phonemes as different, just like the front /a/ versus back /ɑ/, and like the unrounded /ɛ̃/ versus rounded /œ̃/ but 99% of French people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between "ce" and "ceux", that's why I moved /ə/ below /ø/ and added the †, which basically means that the phonetic difference persists but the allophonic realisations merge. Exactly the same way as front vs back <a/â> and rounded vs unrounded <in/un> are shown in the smae chart. Tags: Undo Reverted

- 19:2719:27, 20 November 2023 diff hist +7 m French phonology Sorry my friend but most people don't make the distinction between these two phonemes, and I'm French so I know what I'm talking about. Their existence is nearly only theoretical. Tags: Undo Reverted

- 09:5609:56, 9 November 2023 diff hist +8 m Latin phonology and orthography Allen thinks that both /e/ AND /o/ had a more open allophone before /r/, not just /e/. However it's difficult to know the exact quality, maybe [æ, ɒ] who knows Tag: Visual edit

- 10:4110:41, 5 November 2023 diff hist +429 m Latin phonology and orthography Indeed, Allen says that the vowels preceding a final <m> are short but lengthened. We may inferr that /im, em, am, om, um/ had the quality of short vowels but the quantity of long vowels, thus [ɪ̃ː, ɛ̃ː, ä̃ː, ɔ̃ː, ʊ̃ː] or perhaps [ɪ̃ˑ, ɛ̃ˑ, ä̃ˑ, ɔ̃ˑ, ʊ̃ˑ] Tag: Visual edit
