What's actually impossible coming up with a _deterministic algorithm_ that can achieve consensus in the given context. See "Another Advantage of Free Choice: Completely Asynchronous Agreement Protocols" by Michael Ben-Or, which shows how non-deterministic consensus in this context is still possible.
