Birds and mammals did not evolve it as a defense. It evolved, it was perpetuated in the population because it happened to provide a defense, and thus made them fitter, etc. There was no intent. But note, this should read that HOMEOTHERMY evolved, not warm-bloodedness evolved. I did not get that deep into it though.
