Roman Vasylyovych Klichuk (Ukrainian: Роман Васильович Клічук; born 31 March 1972, Chernivtsi) is a Ukrainian politician, businessman, and the current Mayor of Chernivtsi.[1][2]
Early life[edit]
Roman Klichuk was born on 31 October 1972 in Chernivtsi into a family of doctors. He graduated from the Bukovinian State Medical University and studied at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School. Until 1997, he worked as a medic, then went into business.[3]
Business[edit]
In 1998, he and his partners set up the Roma company, with Klichuk becoming its head. The company specialises in wholesale of alcohol and food products, and is one of the leaders in sales of alcoholic, beer and soft drinks and confectionery products in Chernivtsi, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.[4] Roma company is one of the largest taxpayers in Chernivtsi Oblast.[5]
He is the founder of Taistra Group LLC — a chain of grocery shops with geographical coverage in Chernivtsi, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia regions.[6]
Since 2013, he has owned a chain of restaurants, pubs and pizzerias, united in the company Gojra Group.[7] He is also a co-owner of Brusnitskaya Matsesta, a company engaged in restaurant and hotel business.
Since 2020, he has been a member of the supervisory board of the Chernivtsi National University.[8]
It owns 80.01% of shares of PJSC Firma Bakaliia. Klichuk is a co-founder of the public organisations Inspiring City, Club of Bukovyna Entrepreneurs and Vilna Shpalta.[8]
Political career[edit]
In 2006–2010, he was a deputy of the 5th convocation of the Chernivtsi Oblast Council from the Batkivshchyna party and a member of the deputy budget commission.[3][9]
From 2016 to 2018, he was a member of the executive committee of the Chernivtsi City Council.[3]
In 2018, he moved to the Samopomich party, and in 2019 he ran for the People's Deputies of Ukraine (No. 89 on the list).[3]
On 29 November 2020, Klichuk won the election for mayor of Chernivtsi from the United Alternative party.[2][10][11] On 30 November, the Chernivtsi City TEC announced the results of the election — Roman Klichuk won 59.5% of the popular vote, his opponent Vitaliy Mykhailyshyn received 40.5% of the popular vote.[3] According to the voting results protocol, the number of voters who took part in the voting is 42,874.[3]
Recognition[edit]
In 2016, Roman Klichuk was awarded the Anton Kohanovskyi Municipal Award in the category "Philanthropist of the Year".[12]
Social activities[edit]
Roman Klichuk is an active supporter of the volunteer movement and patron of cultural, sports and social projects.[13] In particular, he regularly supports the Martha Levchenko Charitable Foundation,[14] the Chernivtsi Municipal Territorial Social Service Centre "Turbota",[15] the Pankration Federation of Ukraine,[16] the Ukrainian Leadership Academy,[17] the Chernivtsi Youth Organisation "Stanytsia Plast — National Scout Organisation of Ukraine", the charity fund "Better to Be",[18] the NGO "World Embroidery Day" and others. Klichuk donates all of his salary to charity.[19][20][21] Klichuk is also one of the patrons of the Malanka Fest international festival[22] and the Obnova Fest festival.[23]
Since the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian war, since 2014, Roman Klichuk has been actively helping the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Police of Ukraine, volunteer formations, supporting initiatives from the public to promote increased support for the defenders of Ukraine, and constantly working with patrons to support Ukrainian soldiers.[24][25]
On 5 November 2019, the documentary film The Nightingale Sings. As long as one has a voice (Ukrainian: Соловей співає. Доки голос має), which was filmed with the support of Roman Klichuk.[26]
Personal life[edit]
Roman Klichuk has been married since 1998. He raises three sons.[27][13]
