RBS TV Cruz Alta (channel 3) is a television station in Cruz Alta, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, affiliated with TV Globo, member of RBS TV and owned by Grupo RBS. RBS TV Cruz Alta's studios and transmitter are located on Jango Vidal Street, at São Genaro district.

History[edit]

Headquarters of the TV station in 2010.

TV Cruz Alta was founded on July 1, 1979, by Maurício Sirotsky Sobrinho, becoming the tenth broadcaster of Rede Brasil Sul de Comunicações. On October 1, 1983, together with the RBS TV stations in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, the station was renamed RBS TV Cruz Alta. At the time of its inauguration, RBS TV Cruz Alta broadcast to 48 municipalities in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. In the early 1990s, it expanded its coverage to 62 municipalities. With the creation of RBS TV Santa Rosa in 1992, 46 municipalities that previously received the signal from RBS TV Cruz Alta began to receive the signal from the new station.[1]

In August 2009, Ibope released a survey that confirmed RBS TV Cruz Alta's audience leadership. According to the survey, the broadcaster registered, in its host city, an average share of 71.4%, against 7.1% of the second place in the period from 6 am to midnight between April and June of the same year.[2]

In August 2019, the local block of Jornal do Almoço on this station stopped being broadcast and was incorporated into that of RBS TV Passo Fundo. The journalism team broadcasts local reports in the regional version of the program, made in Passo Fundo. There are two regional blocks, lasting 20 minutes, which today have around 2 million potential viewers.

The station inaugurated its digital signal on March 12, 2014, on channel 33 UHF, in a ceremony held at the Commercial and Industrial Association of Ijuí, broadcast live during Jornal do Almoço.[3]

Transition to digital signal[edit]

The station was scheduled to shut down its analog signal, over VHF channel 3, on December 31, 2023, as part of the federally mandated transition from analog to digital television.[4] The station's digital signal remains on its pre-transition UHF channel 33, using PSIP to display RBS TV Caxias do Sul's virtual channel as 8 on digital television receivers. However, it was indefinitely postponed to a later date.

Programming[edit]

On August 16, 2019, the local block of Jornal do Almoço was extinguished and on August 19, the station began to relay the regional edition of the news program generated by RBS TV Passo Fundo.
