The Portsmouth Independents Party (PIP) is a local political party based in Portsmouth, England. Formed in 2021 by independent councillor George Madgwick. Originally it had only one councillor (George Madgwick) but has since grown to nine.

History[edit]

George Madgwick was elected to Paulsgrove ward in the Portsmouth City Council as an independent councillor in 2021.

George Madgwick then formed the PIP later that year.

In the 2022 elections PIP stood in 8 of the 14 seats up for election, winning in 2. After which the PIP aimed to stand candidates in every ward at the following election.[1]

In the 2023 elections PIP stood in 13 of 14 seats up for election, winning in 3.

In the 2024 elections PIP stood in 12 of the 14 seats up for election, winning in 4, increasing their vote share and ending in 3rd place in the popular vote behind the Liberal Democrats and Labour. The PIP is now targeting control of the council at the 2026 election.[2]

For the 2024 United Kingdom general election the leader of PIP, George Madgwick, endorsed the Conservative candidate Penny Mordaunt for the Portsmouth North constituency after declining an offer to stand for Reform UK.[3]The PIP stood a candidate for the Portsmouth South constituency [4]
