Parkville railway station is a railway station currently under construction as part of the Metro Tunnel project in Melbourne, Victoria. It will be built below Grattan Street between Leicester and Elizabeth Streets. The station has been built using the cut-and-cover method. Construction commenced in 2018 with the station due to open in 2025.[1][2] It will serve the large health and education precinct in the Melbourne suburb of Parkville, including the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Women's Hospital.

It is set to be an interchange between the Metro Tunnel and the proposed Metro Tunnel 2, and provisions have been left in the design of the station to allow for this. This new station will provide a direct connection to the metropolitan train network for Parkville for the first time.

Design[edit]

The station's materials will feature sandstone, steel, glass and bluestone.[3] The station was designed by RSHP, Hassell and Weston Williamson.[4]

The large station has four entrances, two serving the University of Melbourne, one outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the other in front of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.[5] The design is intended to create a grand promenade linking some of Melbourne's key medical institutions.[5] An underground walkway connects the entrances and four sets of lifts underneath Royal Parade, while the main station concourse sits beneath Grattan Street.[5] The main entrance features a 50 metre long steel and glass canopy, and a number of sunlights provide natural light to the station concourse, which is clad on one side with green aluminium.[5] Like other Metro Tunnel stations, exposed concrete is a key design feature of the station.[5]

The station concourse will feature art by Patricia Piccinini titled Vernal Glade, which will consist of a large array of handmade Japanese ceramic tiles in natural colours.[6]

Parkville Precinct[edit]

Parkville station was intended to become a "grand promenade" to connect the area’s health, research and education buildings. A new tram "super stop" was constructed on Royal Parade in November 2023, along with realigned traffic lanes, bicycle lanes, bus stops, footpaths and pedestrian crossings.[7] There will also be more than 250 bicycle parking spaces created.[8]
