Klaus Korhonen (born in 1961), is a Finnish diplomat who had been the Finnish Ambassador to NATO in 2023.
Biography[edit]
Klaus Korhonen was born in 1961.[1]
He graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1986, with a Masters of Social Sciences.[2][3]
Korhonen joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland in 1987.[4][5][6]
From 2009 to 2013, he was the ambassador to the Netherlands.[7][8]
He has worked as an arms control ambassador and chairman of the International Arms Trade Treaty in August 2016.[9]
Korhonen has been the head of the special mission since 1 June 2019.[4]
While Korhonen was the head of the Finnish Special Mission, as Finland made the decision to join NATO, Korhonen personally delivered Finland's membership application signed by Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on 18 May 2022.[10][11][citation needed]
In 2023, he is part of the North Atlantic Council, as Finland officially joined NATO.[12]
In November 2023, he left the North Atlantic Council, and was succeeded by Piritta Asunmaa.[13]
In February 2024, Korhonen was named chairman of the board of the Foreign Policy Institute.[14]
