KipTalk (launched January 2023) is a social networking service. It is among the most used social media platforms word-wide and among the top leading social messaging websites globally. Users on the platform can share text messages, photos and videos in posts known as “Talks” officially known as “posts”. The social community also includes messaging, audio and video calling, job search, market place and communities.[1]

KipTalk was initially created in July 2016 by Mwakwe Rashid and Kagame Michael and was launched in October of that year before having a developer rest break in 2018. KipTalk was based in Kampala at Muteesa 1 Royal University in Uganda and was used by the Information Technology students as means of communication within the university premises.[2] The signature characteristic of the communication service was that posts were limited to 300 characters which was later increased to 500 characters in 2023 when the service resumed from a long developer rest. The service is owned by a Ugandan company KipTalk Communications Limited, which was created in 2022 to take full ownership of the platform KipTalk.[3]

History

[edit]

KipTalk has not yet been shared with any other shareholders apart from the current holders, Mwakwe Rashid and Kagame Michael. The service is owned by Information Technology graduates from Muteesa 1 Royal University in Kampala the capital of Uganda who came up with this social media service which was to be used by university students as communication means and course work research. The service was in 2017 brought to other students of the university offering different courses after being received and welcomed highly.[4]

In 2018, Muteesa 1 Royal University principal stopped KipTalk from being used at the university claiming it had no license and was not legally endorsed by university officials to be an institution communication platform. The website was closed with immediate effect until 2023 when Mwakwe Rashid officially registered KipTalk with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau as a social media community and also registered the platform with the Uganda Communications Commission to operate as a new social media platform in Uganda and the rest of East Africa.[5]

Usage

[edit]

Daily user statistics are not clearly known as the company does not disclose the number of active users on the platform on a daily basis.[6] The Kampala Reports blog ranked KipTalk to have been among the leading social media community in East Africa with a number of two million unique users in a month.[7]

Branding

[edit]

The original logo from 2016 which was simply the word KipTalk was used and designed by Mawanda Ronald a professional graphics designer. This logo was used until 2023 when Astra colors was assigned by KipTalk management to redesign the company logo which is used up to date.[8]
