Infobox always display html code

Hi, I've been trying to install Infobox into my wiki for days. And it still displays errors. I did create a template:infobox. And I did upload ParserFunctions.php and ParserFunction.i18.php to my host. I did include the require_once in Local_Settings.php

But the infobox I create always displays only html code like below:

<tr> <td colspan="2" style="text-align:center;">
Caption for example.png </span></td> </tr><tr><th colspan="2" style="text-align:center;
background:#ccf;">Thien tai Le Hoang Hai</th></tr><tr><th colspan="2" style="text-align:center;
background:#ccf;">ewhl iehq ie</th></tr><tr><th colspan="2" style="text-align:center;
background:#ccf;">ewhl iehq ie</th></tr><tr><th colspan="2" style="text-align:center;
background:#ccf;">ewhl iehq ie</th></tr>

It only show the html code. And I don't know why. Even after trying a lot of time. Finally I found that the above html code always goes out of <table> tag. It cannot be inside <table> tag.

Does anyone face this issue, please help!

Many thanks for your support! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.99.251.185 (talk) 15:46, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Infobox tutorial needed

In my attempts to understand how infoboxes and infobox templates function, I have found it fairly difficult to comprehend, for a number of reasons. I'd like to suggest that someone create a tutorial on infoboxes, covering these topics:

  • how to find the page defining an infobox/template, so that one knows where to go in order to view the instructions and modify the template. For instance, D-Terminal contains the Infobox connector, yet searching Wikipedia for "Infobox connector" does not quickly lead one to any information about the infobox, just those pages that use the template.
  • A brief description of the many advanced capabilites, including transclusions.

I agree; they are a powerful tool, yet the only way I can learn about them is by studying the syntax of the infoboxes I already know about. -RunningOnBrains 03:21, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
I agree also. I haven't found much of anything on here that clearly shows individuals how to build infoboxes from the ground up. I am quite frustrated that I have a desire to create some, but simply have no means to find out how. Like the above poster, I simply study other infobox templates to try and learn. However, most if not all of the good ones are protected from editing, and the view source does not work well. I feel like I'm running around and around in circles looking for the information I need. (Mind meal 11:36, 7 August 2007 (UTC))
It's a little late, but I'd also like to express my desire for an infobox template tutorial. I did two years of a computer science degree and I still can't get my head around how to make one, especially seeing as all I can do is look at other infoboxes and scratch my head! Richard Jackson (talk) 19:16, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm on board with needing this as well. I have only began in the wiki universe and am looking for this function. I thought it would be simple but it's not. I understand the basics behind the templates etc. however there is no "box" whenever I work with this stuff. This is very frustrating and I feel like there is some basic fundamental that is missing here. Hell I can't even create the "basic box" that is on this page. --Thegreatcerebral (talk) 15:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Templates are one of the first things that a new MediaWiki installation needs, and the infobox is a common template. Choate's Professional Wikis book doesn't help much even though he uses infobox as his example. I'm experimenting on a new wiki, and will continue to do so - but the learning curve is steep, the clues are few and far between. How do we find and copy templates (including dependent templates!) and CSS source from one wiki to another? What prerequisites must be installed, eg ParserFunctions? --Jheckmann (talk) 03:08, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

I agree, a tutorial is needed! I have been trying to create an infobox for about a day and a half and am only just now understanding thats it is just a really complicated table. The only article that made this clear to me was Wikipedia:Thinking outside the infobox. It is a real shame that these useful informational organizational tools are just so complicated.--131.137.245.207 (talk) 15:10, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Stacking and aligning multiple template boxes

Editors of St. Louis, Missouri would like to use Template:Quotebox to place directly under Template:Infobox City, and I've tried several ways to accomplish this, to no avail. How is it done (if it is possible)? Alternatively, it could be placed inside city infobox, but I'm not sure that is possible or desirable, or how to do it, if it is. • Is there a way for them to line up nicely next to each other in a grid format? This page on the Carmageddon Wiki looks messy because there is no body text to speak of, so the boxes are all crunching into one another and the sub-headings! JaffaCakeLover (talk) 23:48, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Help on a specific Infobox

I have been trying to get an Inforbox on Rome: Pathway to Power to work, but I am not having any luck. I copied the formatting from a working Infobox, and changed nothing but the listed info, yet I can't get it to show up as an infobox after numerous edit attempts and format checks. Infobox - Boxing

Hey, I don't know where to turn so I'll ask here. All the boxing infoboxes now have one boxer (Curtis Bush) featured on it. For example look at Frank Klaus, the infobox code information is correct, but now it shows the info for Curtis Bush. What happened, can someone tell me how to fix this incase it happens again? three policy proposals for piping links in infoboxes

I've put forward three policy proposals for piping links in infoboxes on such pages as diverse as Bert Newton and Louis A. Johnson - at the piped links talk page. I'd be delighted if all editors interested in infoboxes could consider the three possibilities and perhaps say on the page which proposal they think is best. Cheers and happy editing! Accessibility issues

I've proposed a wkipedia wide project to find and eliminate instances within infobox-style templates of the anti-accessible technique of creating multiple visual rows withn a single row by embedding matching HTML breaks in two (or more) adjacent columns in a table, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Usability#Infobox accessibility issue. This problem has been recently fixed in template:infobox country and template:infobox city. My fear is that there are hundreds of other templates with references using this formatting technique. If anyone is interested in helping with such a project please let me know (here, or at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Usability, or on my talk page, or via email). Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:27, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Infobox/table formatting question: using bullets

Hello! I'm attempting to use Infobox Ship, and I was trying to figure out a good way to use bullets in a particular box. Bullets would be helpful in rows like Armament, where a ship carried several different kinds of guns. However, when I set up a series of bullets like this:

Ship armament=*8 × 380 mm in 2 quad turrets on the bow
*9 × 152 mm AA in 3 triple turrets at the aft
*24 × 100 mm AA in 12 twin turrets
*8 × 40 mm AA
*28 × 57 mm AA in 14 twin turrets
*20 × 20 mm AA

I end up with a box that looks like this:

*8 × 380 mm in 2 quad turrets on the bow
  • 9 × 152 mm AA in 3 triple turrets at the aft
  • 24 × 100 mm AA in 12 twin turrets
  • 8 × 40 mm AA
  • 28 × 57 mm AA in 14 twin turrets
  • 20 × 20 mm AA

How can I get the template to recognize the bullet on the first line? The best thing I can figure out so far is to have a "filler" first line that's a line break or filler text, but that's not what I want. You could check out French battleship Jean Bart to see where I tried to do this but I used a filler line break to get it to work. TomTheHand 17:34, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Information that's only in the Infobox?

I'm looking for MoS guidance on a basic question regarding infoboxes. Is the infobox supposed to be a redundant summary of the information already present in the main article, or is it ok to have information that is only available in the infobox? The specific example that led me here is, I'm editing an airplane crash article, and wanted to remove the airplane's registration number from the intro paragraph since it is a detail that is presented more clearly in the infobox. --GregU 16:13, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

For the record, I finally got some feedback on this at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. The consensus so far is that an infobox is meant to be a summary, but some reasonable amount of data that's only in the infobox is ok if it doesn't fit well in the article. --GregU 08:45, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Help fixing an infobox

It seems the motto parameter on the {{Infobox School}} template is no longer working. It is still listed as an optional field, but regardless of whether somebody uses it, nothing shows up. I know this didn't use to be the case, as I've used this template many times and the motto has always worked before....If somebody who knows how to operate the syntax of these things would take a look, it would be great as I have no idea how to properly write/edit the code on these things. INFO BOX HELP!

I am seeking some help to create an infobox similar in format to this one -

Preceded by Royal Consorts of Russia
March 141881 – November 11894
Succeeded by

as you can see, the previous consort is on the left, the one discussed in the article is in the middle, and the following consort is on the right.

I would like to do the same with the ballets of the choregrapher Marius Petipa. I have created articles about nearly all of his ballets, and I would like to include an infobox that is similar format to teh one above on the bottom of each page like so -

previous ballet, ballet discussed in the article, next ballet.

Is there an infobox template similar in format to the one above that is "generic"? Can one be made?

Help with a new infobox

A number of us working on pages related to Scottish geography have come to the conclusion recently that having a plain pronunciation page is needed as the are numerous place names (especially on Scottish maps but also Irish/Welsh maps) where the pronunciation is not at all obvious to anyone but a Gaelic speaker and the IPA, accurate as it may be, is not known by all and in the case of Gaelic and Irish, requires some rather obscure symbols and sounds. We've tried playing around with existing infoboxes such as the Scottish Placenames infobox or the Languages infobox but they're all too large and unwieldy as we're looking for something that can sit on the right hand side of a page section without intruding too much.

What this infobox would need to do is to:

  • have Pronunciation as the header
  • have a hide/show drop down function
  • display the languages name(s) (names because sometimes Gaelic and Irish share the same spelling but have different pronunciations
  • display the word/name in question so it can be linked to a sound file
  • display the IPA behind the normal spelling

Something like this:

Pronunciation

Scots Gaelic:

An Tairbeart

IPA: [ən̪ˠ t̪ʰaɾʲapərˠʃt̪]

Irish:

Audio file "AnTairbeartIrish.ogg" not found

IPA: [ən t̪ʰaɾʲəbʲəɾt̪]

Having thought about this it might actually be useful for other pages too where foreign names are used in the text body for which pronunciation help would be helpful but where adding the IPA into the text body would just look too clumsy.

I'd love to do this myself but even though I'Ve tried I still don't understand how one creates an infobox. Any help and/or pointers would be highly appreciated. Thanks! Akerbeltz (talk) 11:11, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

There is a first attempt to create this at Template:Scottish Placenames (SandV). I've no idea how to create a hide/show drop down function tho'. Ben MacDui 18:39, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
What I meant with that is something like the show dropdown on Pearl River Delta for example that shows the transliterations for the chinese characters. The only think I'm not certain about is for how many "entries" to allow for. Looking at the Skye article, I guess 10 or so would be good. Akerbeltz (talk) 19:16, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
There is a current thread about the use of hidden sections at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#When to use hidden/collapsible sections. I'd personally recommend against them.
Also, this page is very quiet, you might get more help if you ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Infoboxes or at Wikipedia:Help desk. :) -- Quiddity (talk) 02:08, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Infobox Install Guide

I just started using mediawiki, and during the install of infoboxes, i found VERY little resources on Google. After about 5 hours of learning step by step how to install them I made a guide that is... as simple as possible... As Mediawiki infoboxes require a lot of other templates to function, I probably listed a few 'required templates' that are not required for infobox but better safe than sorry.

Note: on mediawiki 1.14 you will have to edit template infobox to not use the section that erroneously links to template:PROTECTIONLEVEL. I have been told in 1.15 this works properly.

Edit this, redistribute this, link to this, put it on mediawiki, whatever-- someone put it to good use. Installing Infobox guide: http://www.etcwiki.org/wiki/How_to_install_template_infobox_in_mediawiki

How do you access the underlying code for infoboxes? Fine when appropriate. Many vehicle articles have multiple infoboxes. Stray characters on Infobox

In 2000 Australia Beechcraft King Air crash there is an Infobox. This was added on January 10, 2010 by an IP addressee (71.60.242.92). At the top of the Infobox there are the following stray characters: [[Image:|260px|alt=]]. It would be good if an Infobox expert could remove these stray characters. Dolphin51 (talk) 22:35, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Fixed [1] The image needs to be specified with just the filename. The {{Infobox Aircraft accident}} template takes care of the formatting and linking and gets confused if you attempt to do so instead!
The infobox also sets the width to to 230 pixels if you do not specify image_size so you do not have to include this.
The fixed lines are:
|image = beechcraft b200 superkingair zk453 arp.jpg
|alt = A Beechcraft B200 Super King Air pictured in flight
|caption = A Super King Air similar to the aircraft that crashed in Australia
in 2000 and became known as the Ghost Flight
See Template:Infobox Aircraft accident for further documentation and examples.
Hope that helps!

{{B infobox
|par1 =

I have two infoboxes in one article. I would like the value of the parameter "par1" from A infobox display as the parameter "par1" in B infobox, and, if the "par2" in A infobox is not empty, change the background color of B infobox. Is it possible to do it?--WlaKom (talk) 10:28, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

  • My knowledge of MediaWiki is admittedly limited, but my understanding is there is no mechanism to get information into infobox templates other than through the parameters. The best I can come up with is to create a third template that combines all parameters from A and B and feeds them into the A and B infobox templates, but this seems more work than it's worth. If there were a simpler way to do this, someone would have implemented it for {{Death date and age}}, which requires duplicating the date entered into {{Birth date}}. You could also consult mw:Help:Templates.

URL format in infobox

What is the preferred format for web site URLs in infoboxes?—Finell 00:40, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

  • In my experience, there are two schemes that are the most frequently used:
If the website main URL is http://www.example.com, people typically omit the scheme (http://): [http://www.example.com www.example.com]. See Central Intelligence Agency, Motörhead, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, for example.
The runner up is to omit the www. and CamelCase the rest: [http://www.example.com Example.com] See Procter & Gamble, Casa Loma, and Eastman Kodak, for example.
See also Wikipedia_talk:Manual of Style (infoboxes)#URLs in infoboxes for the debate about a style guideline for URLs in infoboxes.
-- DanielPenfield (talk) 13:25, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
A case can be made both for including and for omitting http://. Even with the http://, www is usually superfluous, regardless of capitalization. It would be nice to have some consistency. The discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (infoboxes)#URLs in infoboxes did not go anywhere. I posted the question at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#URL format in infobox, but got no response. That talk page is unusually quiet.—Finell 09:40, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Infobox info - redundancy required or not?

I thought I read somewhere that it is good practice to require that the information in an infobox be redundant - because some accessing the article may have trouble accessing the infobox, it should not contain material that is not also present in the main article. That belief seems supported by a statement on this page (emphasis added):

However, they are not "statistics" tables in that they are only supposed to summarize material from an article—the information should still be present in the main text, because it may not be possible for some readers to access the contents of the infobox.

However, looking at some articles on books, e.g. Fences and Windows, How the Scots Invented the Modern World, I see ISBN and other identifiers in the infobox, but not in the main text. Both are GA, so I assume they have undergone some review.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there an exception for ISBNs I've missed? Is there another, overriding policy?

I'm starting to look at another article on a book, and would like to bring it to GA status, so I'm trying to determine whether the ISBN should be in the main article or not.--SPhilbrickT 16:11, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Footnotes in cave infoboxes

I am currently in a discussion about footnotes in cave infoboxes here. The understanding seems to be that footnotes are not mandatory for the infobox, especially when those footnotes are supplied in the main body of the article. The confusion with this policy is that the coordinate field in the infobox is specifically designed for coordinate display. Wouldn't it necessarily follow, that since this is where editors are wanting to display coordinates and we wish viewers to look for them, that this is also where you would cite them? It seems excessive and redundant to list coordinates all over the page, when we have an infobox specifically designed for quick fact checking, and then add footnotes to the redundancies instead. Also, editing may confuse editors who see an unsourced coordinate in an infobox, when the actual reference is residing somewhere in the main body of the article. All in all, it seems counterintuitive for cave infoboxes with coordinate fields to list the footnotes anywhere else but there. Having it in the infobox makes it much easier for readers, consistent per WP:Citing sources, and readily apparent to editors where the source for every cave article coordinate resides in the event it has or needs one. Leitmotiv (talk) 05:17, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Additionally, any reference hidden in the raw wiki code in an external link (such as with Skeleton Cave) won't be listed in the reflist. Not only does it intuitively make sense to put the reference with the infobox in this particular instance, but it also allows for the reference to be listed in the reflist as well. Leitmotiv (talk) 18:56, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

  • IMO, "edit" means "fix something that's broken in an existing infobox." In your list, you give [[Template::Infobox disease]] as an example, which it just so happens is the exact one I am interested in fixing. But the template itself is locked, and I can't find anywhere to submit my suggested change, other than the talk page. Klortho (talk) 01:45, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Click on the View Source tab and then on the Edit request link. You'll see the explanation "If you have noticed an error or have a suggestion for a simple change, please make a request below. An administrator may then make the change on your behalf." -- DanielPenfield (talk) 05:10, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! It would be nice if those simple instructions could be made part of this page. Klortho (talk) 01:36, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

How do you edit an infobox so that the "no image" image appears? I would like to add this to the infobox of a stub I'm editing so that the article text fits around the infobox neatly rather than have a very small infobox in the lead that will later intrude into other sections once an image is added. In my experience editors who ask about how to "edit an infobox" often are simply unaware that they are not generally editable from the article itself but that you have to go to the template page (found by editing the article page) and edit the particular articles template from there.Zebulin (talk) 20:26, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
The trouble is, it depends on the infobox. Generally you add something like

|image = no_image.jpg

but it could be

|image_name = no_image.jpg

etc etc. The infobox's own documentation page should help you there, if the field isn't obvious. Rich Farmbrough, 02:20, 17 May 2011 (UTC).

What about adding new parameters to an infobox (i.e. ones that, if set, will appear on the infobox public interface)? The several template pages I visited and searches I conducted did not yield any results on how to do this. --81.100.44.233 (talk) 02:31, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Update: The infobox I tried seems to be editable by both non-registered users and registered users. Editing the template did seem to have an effect, but not an entirely expected one. After I changed a single letter in the parameter title, instances of the parameter using the former title were no longer publicly displayed, but on the other hand, instances of the parameter using the newer title were not publicly displayed either. Furthermore, in the template page itself, the old title rather than the new title was being publicly displayed, although in the template code the new title had indeed been saved. Does it take the database time to update across articles, or is it a case of something else that needs to be modified rather than just the code in the visible template page? --81.100.44.233 (talk) 03:18, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

I have, I hope, fixed {{Infobox US university ranking}} and have tried to explain the problem on the talk page. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:34, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Nesting infoboxes

I've been trying to find info on embedding or nesting multiple infoboxes together. Specifically I have many instances where it would be desireable to append an Infobox NRHP to an Infobox Protected area. Is this reasonable and feasible? -McGhiever (talk) 23:04, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

An old thread indeed, but in case anyone is still looking for an answer: {{infobox}} now includes "child" support, which is designed for just such nesting. The template documentation provides some details; it's fairly straightforward to implement such support in templates that use or call {{infobox}}. Is this a help page or an article about Norwegian dogs?

Continued from User talk:WhatamIdoing#Your edits to Help:Infobox

  1. If temporal consistency is such a concern, why use a "real" infobox (or an image of one) as the example? Wouldn't an obviously contrived example be immune from becoming "out of date"?
  2. While it's true that the example is expressed as an image, it's also true that it's an image of an infobox rendered at full scale and in the same position that infoboxes are customarily presented, and thus looks like an infobox at first glance (and maybe subsequent glances unless you're a hardcore editor who immediately notices the extra border, the tiny caption, and the tiny "enlarge" icon, in which case I ask "Do you even need this help to begin with?"). My first questions upon seeing Help:Infobox are: "Is this a help page or an article about a Norwegian dog?" followed by "Am I in the right place?" Why must the image be presented at the top of the help page? Why must it be rendered at full scale?
  3. Here's my proposal:
    • Use a contrived example (representing the example infobox as a table and with the same image as in Wikipedia:Picture tutorial instead of a JPEG screenshot). See also Help:Designing infoboxes#Designing.
    • Move the example down to sections 1 "What infoboxes do" or 2 "What should an infobox contain?" and explain how the example fulfills the purpose stated in that section or displays what it should display per that section.
-- DanielPenfield (talk) 13:20, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

The problem with using a "real" infobox table, rather than an image, is that it pollutes the page with invalid metadata unless the example is truly contrived, and a contrived example may confuse readers who expect an illustration. I'm not convinced that sighted readers will mistake this page for an article on a dog breed in any case, but if a "real" infobox is used we run this risk for non-visual representations of the page (as the first thing the reader will encounter is a bunch of infobox data). IMO the example should stay at the top of the article, though, as the help sidebar is an ancillary navigation feature rather than something which pertains directly to the page and thus its prominence should be readily sacrificed if required. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 15:17, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

I picked the dog infobox solely because I found it quickly and didn't see many alternatives. I have no objections to a fake example, but AFAICT, that will require someone to actually create a fake example.
I believe that (for exactly the reason of "Am I in the right place?") it would be preferable to have the example at the top of the page. Navboxes should be prioritized only if we believe that most people reaching the page wanted to be somewhere else, much like we use hatnotes to send people elsewhere before they encounter the rest of a page. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:22, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Hmmm... You didn't directly answer any of the questions I posed and the response you proffer sounds like nonsense (viz., "pollutes the page with invalid metadata"; apparently the browser's direct rendering of a table in HTML does not count as an "illustration", but a JPEG of the screencapture of the same does; raising uncertainty around the use of a screen reader by people less fortunate than me for the case where the first part of my proposal is adopted, but not the second (also, conveniently, I don't have a screen reader to verify your claim!)). I've been through this before, I get it: The answer is preordained and there will be no debate. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 06:24, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
I suppose we could try creating a small infobox that is partly fake (use Lorem ipsum?) or about this help page (i.e., "Main use    To organize facts in articles; Number used Appear in over a million Wikipedia articles"; etc.). That's likely to be useful for everyone. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:39, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Mentioning children's names

Infobox length

The guidance on the Help page says that Infoboxes should be "concise" and not "lengthy," but that guidance is open to interpretation. My question is: How long is too long? Some infoboxes have quite a bit of content. For example, the infobox for Pittsburgh stretches on for 2.5 pages on a regular-size computer screen. There are clear policies for when an article is too big, and for the maximum length for the lead. Can we also come up with some clear guidance on the suggested maximum length of an infobox? For Right to left Writing and Reading Languages

Such languages such as Arabic and Dhivehi, the proper way is the template or the infobox being on the left side of the page. Is there anyway i can force and override such that the infobox floats to the left side of the page? Previously I use float:left; coding. But now i really dont understand. Can anyone explain how this type of area can be added to a new infobox? Twillisjr (talk) 14:46, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

What happens to USER Infoboxes when we die?

Hi folks, I am researching technology and generational succession and wondering how we modify Wikiepedia editor user infoboxes in the event of passing?

Is there a duplicate template for every userbox that can be applied to indicate the Wikipedia user has desceased?

I don't really speak with a lot of Wikipedians because of the often confusing politics that have evolved over the years, but what are we, as a community, doing about acknowledging the passing of deceased Wikipedians with respect to their digital estate and tributes to it?

Are we building an encyclopedia of collections for all time that is going to post-date our individual expiry dates?

Help me discover where we are going with this. Wikiworld2 (talk) 00:30, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

WikInfoboxer: A tool to help users create infoboxes

The current creation of Wikipedia infoboxes is based on templates that are created and maintained collaboratively. While templates provide a standardized way of representing infobox information across Wikipedia articles, they pose several challenges. Different communities use different infobox templates for the same category articles; a template designed for a specific category of articles is used for other different categories and its attributes are miss-understood; attribute names differ (e.g., date of birth vs. birthdate), and attribute values are expressed using a wide variety of measurements and units. Finally, templates are free form in nature; when users fill attribute values no integrity check is performed on whether value is of appropriate type for the given attribute, often leading to erroneous infoboxes.

Guiding contributors in the creation of infoboxes would mean creating richer and more correct information. We are working on the Infoboxer system, which is a tool grounded in Semantic Web technologies that overcomes challenges in creating and updating infoboxes, along the way making the process easier for users. We have developed a simple research prototype of Infoboxer to test our ideas (http://sid01.cps.unizar.es/). However, as a research prototype, it is not ready to be used by Wikipedia editors yet. Therefore, we are applying for a Wikimedia Individual Engagement Grant which would enable us to transform a simple research prototype in a useful tool ready to be used for editors to create infoboxes for Wikipedia pages.

Please give us your advice in the discussion board of the proposal: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants_talk:IEG/WikInfoboxer

Guidance needed on adding maps

This help page really needs a basic summary to explain how to add a map and a pushpin location and coordinates. Multiple images

I just used {{multiple image}} within an infobox at Tower Hill Memorial. There may be other 'multiple' aspects to that infobox that may need correcting or fixing, but for now can anyone here confirm that using multiple images in an infobox doesn't break things in any way (this is not covered at Help:Infobox picture)? Infobox for Composers

I am not sure whether this is the proper location for this observation, but many articles for famous 17th, 18th, or 19th century composers have little to no infobox, while many other famous intellectuals at those times have lengthy infoboxes. Is there a reason for this? Since this is an observation about a group of articles, not a specific one, I did not attach it to the talk page of a specific composer. Also, please let me know if this comment belongs elsewhere. DynaGuy00 (talk) 23:44, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

More input needed at RfC on infobox birthplace/nationality/citizenship

 – Pointer to relevant discussion elsewhere.

Please see Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Infoboxes#RfC on birthplace, nationality, and citizenship parameters with matching values.

This RfC has been running for a while but input has dropped off, and right now it's about an even split between the guidelines a) saying nothing at all about the matter, or b) saying to avoid putting the same country in two or three infobox parameters (the other options in the RfC have attracted nearly no support). It's not going to be a useful outcome (just another RfC again some time later) if this closes with "no consensus", so this tie needs to be broken – with good reasoning, not with WP:JUSTAVOTE of course.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:48, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

'website' or 'url'?

Is there a rule or established convention regarding whether to use 'Website' or 'URL' in the infobox? Some infoboxes display the link to the relevant website as

"Website    nosuchwebsite.com"  while others display it as "URL    nosuchwebsite.com".

It seems like 'URL' is usually used in articles about a primarily online entity (such as facebook or disqus) and 'Website' is used for everything else. But the Amazon article uses 'Website' and while Netflix uses 'URL', Redbox use 'Website'.

Guideline on not making the lead illegible?

Granted, this is common sense, but not everyone on WP has any of that. Case in point, Syrian_Civil_War. That info box is so wide that it takes up the entire width of the screen, and I have to scroll down *eight pages* before I get to the lead (on my browser, the only part of the lead that's visible to the left of the info box is the word "The"). And that's on a laptop with a wide screen -- god knows what it looks like on a phone. I tried moving the first paragraph of the lead up before the info box, but was reverted because that's not how it's supposed to be done. I tried putting {{clear}} after the infobox, but was reverted because that's not how it's supposed to be done. Just now I collapsed it, but I expect that well be reverted too, because this guideline doesn't make explicit allowance for doing that. Meanwhile, there are quite a few people complaining on the talk page about the lead being illegible, the worst they've ever seen for a major article, etc. Could we maybe have a few words of common sense in this guideline, for the idiots who don't have any? — kwami (talk) 19:12, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Yes, that was just reverted, because the "infobox is the best thing about the page", as if the infobox were the article. I reverted back, but because of the political problems of the topic, only 1 rv is allowed per day. — kwami (talk) 19:47, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

Wow, I see what you're talking about. As of today the infobox only takes up half of the screen (right half), but nonetheless there's waaay too much information in it. Doesn't follow wikipedia's guidelines for what an infobox should contain either.Niccast (talk) 18:25, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
