Hampton Miller Morris (born February 17, 2004)[1] is an American weightlifter. At the 2024 Summer Olympics, he won bronze in the men's 61 kg event. He is a three-time gold medalist in the men's 61 kg event at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships (2021, 2022 and 2023). He also currently holds both the junior and senior clean and jerk world records in the men's 61 kg class.

Career

Morris won the gold medal in the men's 61 kg event at the 2021 Pan American Weightlifting Championships held in Guayaquil, Ecuador.[2][3] He won the silver medal in his event at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games held in Colombia.[4][5] Morris was also one of the flagbearers for the United States during the opening ceremony.[4]

Morris won the gold medal in the men's 61 kg event at the 2022 Junior World Weightlifting Championships held in Heraklion, Greece.[6][7] Lifting 160 kg in the Clean & Jerk also was a junior world record.[7]

He won the gold medal in his event at the 2022 Pan American Weightlifting Championships held in Bogotá, Colombia.[8][9] Morris also set a new junior world record of 162 kg in the Clean & Jerk.[9] He improved this record to 163 kg at the 2022 Pan American Junior Weightlifting Championships held in Lima, Peru.[10]

Morris competed in the men's 61 kg event at the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships held in Bogotá, Colombia. He won the gold medal in his event at the 2023 Pan American Weightlifting Championships held in Bariloche, Argentina.[11] He also won the gold medal in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk events.

On September 6, 2023, Morris won the gold medal in the clean and jerk at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships men's 61 kg, becoming the first American to win a gold medal at a World Championship since 1972.[12]

On August 7, 2024, Morris became the first male U.S. weightlifter to win an Olympic medal since 1984, with his bronze in the men's 61 kg event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.[13][14]
