Summary

Description
English: This audio file, 3 minutes 23 seconds in length, conveys the sound of an articulated narrow-gauge 400 class "Beyer-Garratt" steam locomotive of the South Australian Railways at close quarters starting off, then its train of ore-carrying gondola cars predominating, then the sounds of the hard-working locomotive reverberating in the distance. Throughout, the characteristic paired beats from the Garratt’s two engine units are evident. The recording was made in the Mid-North of South Australia in 1969, on the narrow-gauge railway line to Broken Hill, a short time before it closed once the new standard gauge route was opened.
