Fair use rationale for Slug (song)[edit]

This is a sound sample from a commercial recording. Its inclusion here is claimed as fair use because:

  1. It illustrates an educational article that specifically discusses the song from which this sample was taken, as well as the band that performs it. Certain aspects of the song can only be fully understood by the reader by hearing the actual audio.
    • The song was written with the idea of "visual music", creating an image of lights turning on in a city. This audio clip can help the reader demonstrate how the song's electronic rhythm used synthesizers, guitars, and drums to create the visual effect for the listener.
    • The guitar notes were described by Bono as a visual of Christmas lights; again, this sound sample helps the reader to understand that description by containing some of the notes in question.
    • Critics noted how the song sounds different from that of other U2 releases.
    • Bono sang a murmured vocal track, which was praised by were praised by critics, which can only be demonstrated to the reader by hearing the actual audio.
  2. The clip runs for approximately 27 seconds; as the song is 4:41 in length, this falls under the guideline of 10% or 30 seconds (whichever is less) maximum of the song's length (10% of 4:41 - or 281 seconds - is 28.1 seconds). The sample could not be used as a substitute for the original commercial recording.
  3. It is of a lower quality than the original recording.
  4. It is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted sample of comparable educational value.
  5. It is believed that this sample will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original recording.
