Yang Hyun Chun (also known as Oscar) is an entrepreneur and investor from South Korea. He is known for being the founder and chairman of Cocone Corporation, a Japanese immersive entertainment company.[2]

He is also the founder of NHN Japan (now Line),[3] along with starting an investment company and a business school in South Korea.

Early life and education[edit]

Chun was born on September 4, 1966 in South Korea and he moved to Japan in 1994.[1] He attended Waseda University and later received a master's degree from Keio University's School of Media and Policy Studies.[4][5] He also received an honorary doctorate in entrepreneurship from Gachon University.[6][7]

Career[edit]

Chun co-founded Hangame, a gaming company in Japan in 2000 with Kakao Chairman Kim Beom-soo. In 2004, NHN Japan was established after the merger of Naver and Hangame. Chun served as the CEO and grew the company from an initial capital of 35 million yen to a company with sales of 10 billion yen. He later served as the Chairman of HNH Japan until 2008.[1][8]

After leaving HNH Japan, Chun founded Cocone, a digital content company. He expanded the company to Seoul, Tokyo, Kyoto, Sendai, Shanghai and the US. In 2019, he acquired NHN Japan's Hangame division and incorporated it as a 100% subsidiary of Cocone.[8] Under his leadership, Cocone has reported over 130 million game downloads and the development of more than one million unique digital products. Sales figures have reached 16 billion digital items, with an average of two million monthly active users on its platform. As of 2023, the company operates a total of 16 services.[9][10]

Chun is also the co-founder of AG Investment (formerly Cognitive Investment), a venture investment firm in Korea.[11][12] In 2022, Chun started Gachon Cocone School, as part of Gachon University, to support and foster entrepreneurship.[13]
