Porgy and Bess is an upcoming American musical drama film written and directed by Dee Rees, based on the opera of the same name by George and Ira Gershwin, which itself was an adaptation of the novel Porgy by DuBose Heyward.

Premise[edit]

Porgy, a disabled beggar, tries to save Bess from her abusive partner in 1920s South Carolina.

Production[edit]

It was announced in February 2020 that Dee Rees was set to write and direct a new film adaptation of the opera, following the 1959 film directed by Otto Preminger with Charles and Irwin Winkler producing the remake, with the latter having been trying to bring together a new adaptation of the opera since 1986.[1]

By June 2021, Rees was still developing the film, stating "It's getting into the themes I want to talk about, like Black land loss and displacement, it speaks to the timelessness of this love at odds with circumstance. Here’s this connection that’s good. Here’s this circumstance that's not what we want it to be. And both those things can be happening. It will be a really interesting take if it gets done. Fingers crossed".[2]
