Muthumudalige Nissanka was born on February 20, 1988 in Kotahena, Colombo. Kotahena is the area with the highest population in the city of Colombo as well as the area where different ethnic groups such as Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burgher live. It seems that the mixing of these different cultures and traditions led to his later creations. Also, he has traveled to many countries of the world and has sourced countries like Armenia, Georgia, United Kingdom, Estonia, Russia, India as the background of his creations. Currently, he married and lived in Zollikofen in Switzerland with his wife.
Early life and education[edit]
At the age of five, Nissanka began learning the Sinhala script at home and received further instruction from the Nayaka Thero of Paramananda Viharaya, Colombo. Three years later, he commenced his primary education at St. Lucia's College, affiliated with St. Lucia's cathedral in Kotahena, Colombo, before continuing his studies at D.S. Senanayake College. Throughout his schooling, he exhibited leadership qualities as a student leader and actively participated in the literary society.
In 2000, Nissanka represented his country at the International Conference on Youth Participation against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Manila, Philippines. Subsequently, in 2001, he attended the Second World Conference against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Dhaka.,[1] followed by participation in the World Conference for the Protection of Children in Japan in 2002.
Post-graduation, Nissanka assumed a role as an organizer with the PEACE organization. He then pursued higher education, earning a degree in business management from Yerevan University in Armenia. Additionally, he studied Russian language and management at Hamburger University in Chicago, and completed a program in media management at Northwestern University in America.
Literature Collaborations[edit]
Nissanka made his definitive debut with "Fifty Beautiful Short Stories," a 200-page tome featuring 50 inspirational short stories,[2] slated for release in late 2019. Following this, he published his second book titled "Gohar," a work within the mystical genre, he has since published a total of 17 works.
Throughout his literary career, Nissanka consistently engages with the darker aspects of Sri Lankan society,[3] culture, religion, and politics, subjecting them to critical analysis. His 'Thrithwa' trilogy addresses themes such as homosexuality, rejected within Sri Lankan tradition; religious myth in "Baba X"; and political failure in "Asiklanthaya." Additionally, he delves into topics like Tamil terrorism[4] in "Three Bombs," Islamic extremism in the aftermath of the Colombo attack,[5] the plight of transgender individuals in Sri Lanka[6] in "Po" and the disruption caused by superstitions rooted in religion and traditions[7]in his work "11."
Nissanka's writings present these complex issues within the framework of captivating fiction,[8] inviting readers to explore and question societal norms.[9] However, his works have often faced criticism and scrutiny due to their unflinching portrayal of the darker facets of society and tradition[10]
