Golden Rough was a Sydney-based band formed by songwriter Dave Orwell in 1995 after the break-up of his previous band Oliver.[1] Stylistically, Golden Rough have been variously described as country-space pop,[2] sprawling, ragged electric rock, sparse acoustic pop[3] to pop-rock,[4] and country rock.[5]
The band released an EP, It's a Heck of a Machine, in 1995 and an album, Twin Firs, in 1998 on Seattle-based label Summershine Records. Their following two albums, This Sad Paradise and Provenance were released on Candle Records. The group played consistently, including at the Sydney Big Day Out[6] and shows with touring US artists Elliott Smith and Joe Pernice (Scud Mountain Boys, Pernice Brothers). In 2000 Golden Rough were named Best Unsigned Act (that is, not signed to a major label) by the Australian Music Critics Conference[7] and This Sad Paradise was picked up for distribution in the UK by Hot Records[8] (home of Ed Keuper and Eva Cassidy) and Parasol Records[9] in the US. As a result of enthusiastic US college radio support, the band embarked on a successful East-Coast tour of the United States later that same year.
