Best Screenplay is a category of awards frequently bestowed by film awards ceremonies at various levels (and some television awards), recognizing achievements in the writing of screenplays. In many cases, such awards are divided between "Best Original Screenplay" for an entirely new work, and "Best Adapted Screenplay" for a screenplay adapted from a previous work, although in some instances the relationship between the original work and the adaptation is tenuous. Some national awards ceremonies offer awards for the best screenplay produced in that country, and other awards for foreign screenplays.
- Academy Award for Best Story, given from the beginning of the Academy Awards in 1929 until 1956
- Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, created in 1940 as a separate writing award from the Academy Award for Best Story
- Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, previously named the Academy Award for Best Screenplay Based On Material From Another Medium, given from the beginning of the Academy Awards in 1929

- BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay, awarded from 1968 to 1982. In 1983 it was split into original and adapted screenplay categories
