Contested deletion[edit]

This page should not be speedily deleted because... (This nomination is the result of some editors not understanding the difference between 'Record Label' and 'Record Company'. A Record company is a business involved in the record industry. It may or may not release records under its own name. A 'record label' is as it says, a label used to release records for example here is a photo of a Cameo records release. Large record companies used a number of different labels to signify different genres, markets and many of those labels are not significant enough to have their own article. I also find it disconcerting that nominator systematically emptied this category and then nominated for deletion. The nice way would have been to ask me for clarification, or failing that not to try and hide the nomination through the speedy route. ) --Richhoncho (talk) 08:49, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was not trying to hide the deletion with Speedy notification. The problem is there is an article for Cameo Records which was a label in the 1920s. Cameo-Parkway Records is the Cameo records the Bobby Rydell songs were released under. They are being lumped under the wrong category. I will send this to another moderator to review.LongLiveMusic (talk) 09:32, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, if my memory serves me correct, Cameo Parkway was two record companies merging in the late 50s early 60s (I have no knowledge of a 20s Cameo, and unless it did blues, unlikely to). They kept both 'labels going' If some of the entries relate to a different label, then they should be removed, but that's not what you did. I would recommend talking to WP:Music with notifications to the relevant projects. The whole single category is a mess because so few (including some in the industry) understand the difference between label and company. --Richhoncho (talk) 09:41, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You can read about Cameo Records. It stopped being Cameo Records in 1928 when it merged with Pathé Records. It is not linked to Cameo Records of Cameo-Parkway Records was started in 1956 and Parkway in 1967 I believe. Cameo Records did due blues and jazz music. This are two completely different companies with two completely different WP pages.LongLiveMusic (talk) 09:46, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
And if there had been any members for the 20s company in the category, if would have been fine to remove them and if I'd seen you do it I might have tipped you a thankyou, but that's not what you did is it? --Richhoncho (talk) 09:49, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are no WP songs articles from the 1920s that I could find. This category is not needed and should be blank. That is why I added the correct category to the Bobby Rydell singles. You have now reverted them back to the incorrect category as Cameo Records is a completely different company.LongLiveMusic (talk) 09:52, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS. Perhaps photographic evidence is required? Cameo-Parkway may well have been the record company he was signed to, but here's an image of a Rydell single release. --Richhoncho (talk) 09:59, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As I have stated before, that Cameo for Bobby Tyrell was started in the 1950s and is Cameo-Parkway. Cameo-Parkway already had a singles category. Cameo Records is a different company from the 20s that never released a single by Rydell as he was not alive.LongLiveMusic (talk) 11:16, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you need to read the Cameo-Parkway article at WP. --Richhoncho (talk) 11:18, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There should be a dab (redirect) for the later Cameo Records, eg Cameo Records (1950s label), as there are clearly 2 different entities here. Oculi (talk) 15:47, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am not disagreeing that a dab would help on the articles, but we're talking about categories here. --Richhoncho (talk) 18:53, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the best solution would be to rename this category Category:Cameo Records (1950s label) singles. I don't believe that at this time there would be a need to create one for the 1920s label at this time unless there are more WP articles found for singles specifically for the 1920s label. This would prevent an editor incorrectly adding 1920s and 1950s singles in the same category. This along with the redirect for Cameo Records (1950s label) to go to Cameo-Parkway Records I think would erase any ambiguity for editors or readers.LongLiveMusic (talk) 06:13, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I had been thinking Cameo (Record Label) singles as a short effective means of identification. It did remain around until 1967, so 1950s is not very effective. 'Record Label' indentifies, for those that know, that it not a record company. --Richhoncho (talk) 07:42, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think Cameo (Record Label) would reduce the ambiguity enough since both were record labels. Personally I think 1950s is fine since they started in the 1950s and only released under Cameo until 1962, but the 60s could be added to the title if we all agree that would be more accurate. The songs from 1962 to 1967 were released as Cameo-Parkway.LongLiveMusic (talk) 08:24, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
