The Baring family has been influential in English finance, politics and the arts since the late 18th century. Originally from Germany, Johann Baring emigrated to England in 1717, took the name John Baring and became a prosperous wool merchant in Exeter. His sons John and Francis Baring founded the London merchant house "John and Francis Baring Company", which later became Baring Brothers & Co.
