Avteq was founded in 2002 by Jed Macartney and Rob Powell as an aviation consulting business.[1] In 2005 it diversified into locomotive manufacturing, producing 12 VL class locomotives for Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia from a factory in Sunshine.[2][3][4]

Avteq designed a second locomotive class, but none were ever manufactured.[5] The company was deregistered in 2013.[6]
