Career and research

[edit]

Allan G.A. Coombes began his career by earning a degree in metallurgy and materials science from the University of Nottingham, followed by a PhD in polymer physics from the University of Bristol. He later undertook a research fellowship in bioengineering at University College London, which paved the way for a two-year tenure at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he explored the use of biodegradable polymers in bone repair.[1]

During the 1990s, Coombes returned to the University of Nottingham to advance research in areas such as colloidal drug delivery systems, vaccine development, and biodegradable materials for tissue engineering. By 1998, he had joined Aston University as a lecturer in pharmaceutical sciences, focusing his work on topics like microencapsulation, polypeptide drug delivery, vaccine formulation, and biomaterials.[1] In 2006, he moved to Kingston University. Between 2010 and 2013, he was part of the Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2014, Coombes held concurrent positions at the University of Queensland and the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. By 2015, he was primarily based at the International Medical University. In 2017, he joined the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai, Thailand.

As of 2024, Coombes has been cited over 9,300 times, with an h-index of 46.[2]
