Activity??
Are there still people interested in reviving the project? CRwikiCA (talk) 18:11, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
- I have made some updates to the infobox for Barendrecht ([old version]). This includes upgrading some of the images to higher quality versions that were already available on the commons and adding all fields that are in my opinion applicable. In addition to this I have also added the {{Template:Geographic location}}. Both these updates might also be nice for other municipalities. CRwikiCA (talk) 21:21, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Semi-active
I changed the status of the project to semi-active and will use the advice in Wikipedia:INACTIVEWP to try to revive it. In particular they list 10 points. The initial goal is to go through these and execute them. Please note that I personally have limited time. Be bold in contributing to this Project. CRwikiCA (talk) 21:56, 12 February 2013 (UTC) Progress and comments per point:
Update project page:
I archived some of the old contents of the page, but the information is still scattered and needs work. CRwikiCA (talk) 19:48, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
I decluttered most of the project page and put some of the information on separate on sub-pages to have a compact project page for people that initially look at the project. CRwikiCA (talk) 19:31, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Provide clear suggestions:
Initial goals are posted on main page, see below for discussion about further goals. CRwikiCA (talk) 19:31, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Create missing templates:
I added a tag in the {{WikiProject Netherlands}} banner for assessment purposed and updated the userbox {{User WikiProject Dutch municipalities}} in addition to the previous one. The thing missing from the list would be a invite template, but I will not develop this at this time. Feel free to do it if you would like it. Goals
After re-activating the project I suggest the following goals to be listed on the main page
- Tag all populated places in the Netherlands. (more info)
- Include/update a location box for all municipal articles. (info, status)
- Update the infobox for all municipal articles. (info, status)
- Increase the quality of the articles within the scope of this project.
In addition to these there are also the following smaller things
- Archiving this talk page properly, there are four archives with one discussion each.
- Have a bot tag all the non-municipal articles within the scope of this project with the |muni=yes |muni-importance=Low fields.
And for the long run we might want to set certain goals for article improvement, for example
- Get all Top-importance articles to B-quality minimum
- Get all High-importance articles to C-quality minimum
- Get 200 Mid-importance articles to Start-quality minimum
- Get 5 GA-quality articles total
- Get 20 B-quality articles total
- Get 50 C-quality articles total
CRwikiCA (talk) 18:51, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Goal: Featured list
I think it would be possible to work on List of municipalities of the Netherlands and upgrade it to a featured list. It will take some work to meet the criteria, but some already featured lists of places have a quality that can be matched with some work. This would most likely mean that the content of Table of municipalities of the Netherlands would need to be merged into the list article. CRwikiCA talk 15:16, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
- I have made extensive updates to this list, but it might need a critical look, so feel welcome to check over the list. CRwikiCA talk 18:46, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
- I am happy to say that this goal has been achieved and that List of municipalities of the Netherlands is now a featured list! CRwikiCA talk 12:35, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
Goal achieved
The goal of including a {{geographic location}} template and fill it completely for each municipality has been achieved! CRwikiCA talk 18:01, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Data templates in infoboxes
Example for Appingedam | |
---|---|
Area | |
• Total | 24.58 km2 (9.49 sq mi) |
• Land | 23.78 km2 (9.18 sq mi) |
• Water | 0.80 km2 (0.31 sq mi) |
Population (January 2021)[d 2] | |
• Total | data missing |
It has come to my attention that the population information (and area and density figures as well) are not regularly updated for the municipal articles. I am currently going through the articles to update the infoboxes with various additional information, but I do not expect that the population, density and area numbers are updated manually every year. There are, however, some data templates available that could simplify this process and keep the article information up-to-date both in the infobox and in the lead where the population number is often quoted. On the right I created an example infobox with the fields that are subject to changing numbers and which are the candidates to be filled from data templates. These templates already exist for the population and land area figures. In addition to this there are the total and water area numbers, density information and (updated) references that cannot yet be pulled from a data template.
Test space for references:

Note that we can try to update this test infobox during this discussion. The following template options are currently available for the various parameters:
Current EN template | Automated option | Current NL template | |
---|---|---|---|
Population | Template:Dutch municipality population | N/A | nl:Sjabloon:Array Nederland gemeentes inwonertallen |
Population year | Yes, through template. | N/A | Yes |
Population ref | Yes | N/A | No |
Total area | Template:Dutch municipality total area | N/A | nl:Sjabloon:Array Nederland gemeentes oppervlakte (data from 2008) |
Area ref | Yes, through template | N/A | No |
Land area | Template:Dutch municipality land area | N/A | nl:Sjabloon:Array Nederland gemeentes landoppervlakte (data from 2008) |
Water area | Template:Dutch municipality water area | Difference of total and land area (use template) | Not from template |
Population density | Template:Dutch municipality population density | Auto calc in infobox or divide pop. by (land) area | Not from template |
Note that the population and land area data templates use slightly different formats. I propose to use data templates to fill the infoboxes of the Dutch municipalities and provide a framework that can do this. This includes adding this to the advice on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Dutch municipalities/Templates page. In addition to this I have the following sub-proposals:
- Use the current template format as used in Template:Population Dutch municipality by code for these templates.
- Create and/or update these templates with current data for population, total area and land area.
- Create a ref field that automatically updates the references.
- Compute the water area as the difference between total and land area, but do this through a template.
- Compute the density by division of population divided by land area, but do this through a template.
Let me know what your opinions about this are. CRwikiCA talk 19:55, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- Looks good. Please do not show the wrong values "0" while work is in progress. - Patrick (talk) 21:14, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, I changed them to "?" to show this except the density, that doesn't show then. Maybe we should also consider the names of the template and phrase them something like Template:Data Dutch municipality xxx, with xxx population, land area, etc. CRwikiCA talk 01:45, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- There apparently is a total area template already, I updated the table. CRwikiCA talk 14:12, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- I am currently updating the total area template as a first, because it is not on Wikipedia. It might take some time to finish that one. CRwikiCA talk 18:03, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
- All the area templates are now updated and in place, see the test infobox for execution. CRwikiCA talk 21:54, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
- I now also include the option to use the municipal name as input, using {{CBS-code Dutch municipality}}. CRwikiCA talk 22:32, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
I implemented all the suggestions and would now suggest to roll it out as used in the test infobox. If there are not additional comments I will start and go ahead with that. Which includes updating the Templates subpage with this data template information and revised infobox advice. CRwikiCA talk 17:00, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
- Until now templates with a name starting with "Data " were always members of a family of templates with a particular special format. Perhaps we can drop "Data" from the four new names?. - Patrick (talk) 14:01, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
- That would be a reasonable change. I have started updating some municipal articles for it, so it would be ideal if a bot could go through and rename the templates in the articles as well then. CRwikiCA talk 16:50, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
- I have done some manually. A bot does not seem needed. - Patrick (talk) 00:57, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I see. It seems to be possible manually. Some of the articles still have the old format in the lead but I might get to those in the next few days. CRwikiCA talk 05:16, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- I also edited the links in this thread, so it refers to the right places. CRwikiCA talk 05:21, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- I went through some of the municipal articles and think I got the last few that were missing. Thanks for your help! CRwikiCA talk 05:44, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Dutch Municipalities At Wikimania 2014
Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

Goal completed!
After more than a year of work, all Dutch municipalities have updated infobox that pull their population and area numbers from data templates! CRwikiCA talk 18:44, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
Importance assessment
I included an initial importance assessment to the page, mostly based on population. Does anyone have any different suggestions for this? CRwikiCA (talk) 15:30, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
