Peer Review
The article on Thiruvananthapuram district is expanded. I am inviting the members to perform a peer review. -- Rajith Mohan :) (Talk to me...) 07:18, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

AfD for Pradip Somasundaran
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pradip Somasundaran
Tintin Thanks for the invitation. Yes we are very passionate about music and musicians of Kerala. Don't you think some guys like Ageo are unnecessarily making it very personal? I know my music very well. Me and Jyothis have done quite a bit of searching on this guy and also know him well through T.v programs. If we were to go for a public poll where everyone in Kerala is allowed to vote then beware! We all will be beaten to pulp by his fans especially the female and middle aged ones(they like old songs which he specialises in) and those who watch T.V:-). Such is his popularity and respect here. He is more respected than adored like some others like vidhu pratap or afsal. Maybe since he is a lecturer. Some programs like Anjali on Amrita run due to him. Since he appears almost every day on Doordarshan his face is familir to every T.V watcher from 1996! He is a quiet guy who IMHO is being treated very badly by the so called film industry. If he were to sing more in films he would be the best after K.J.Y, M.G Sreekumar and P.Jayachandran. But he is sticking on to his job also(I am a lecturer too so think best for him to do)But he is a computer hardware geek and linux geek too! He came to our college to give a lecture on Linuxsome years back! His knowledge on linux and music are vast. You can know his talent from his blog..his songs are a treat...So guys I think instead of treating a fellow malayalee like this, help me and jyothis out on this. We are here to stay. Jyothis is already in malayalam wiki.I am determined to get all our great singers here. Also willing to help you guys on any thing you want. But first help us out on this issue and let's stop giving "paras" to each other:-). Let's be united..and we can do wonders for malayalam and malayalees....If we do not know about something best to admit it than clinging on to nothing.(Tintin u did the right thing...ur attitude has been very good) Thanks....Let's move as friends...Please ask Ageo also to calm down. I do not keep any personal vengeance with anyone. If we are to create great articles we should be united and not scattered! Also jyothis has put so much of his time and energy in talking to the poor guy over phone and managed to get some info from him. He was shy and wanted to stay away from all this. So jyothis had a tough time. But now the article is full of all the minute details and achievements of this guy and well documented and is fully verifiable. So now the fight is only about battered ego's. Let's do away with those ego's. Anyway it was due to all this fight that we all could get so much info on the guy! So let this article remain. Help us to help you...

- Hmm..another tough one. He does find mention in The Hindu a few times [1]. I think he blanked the article because of the message he got on his talk page. Gosh..notability is such a tricky issue — almost impossible to ascertain. Kerala School - An is it just me question.
The first time I saw this article (a couple of months back), I thought it was a hoax — it was just too good to be true. A little bit of googling, and I end up flabbergasted. Indeed as the article claims, the father of analytical mathematics is a Kochikaaran. And calculus took shape on God's Own soil, and not under an apple tree, as I had believed.
Is it just me, or has anyone heard of Madhava of Sangamagrama before? My first impulse was to check my NCERT textbooks. Well, he doesn't figure anywhere there. No wonder I was speechless when an anon asked me at Talk:Calculus to quote from Madhava as he should be famous in India. I'm amazed the Kerala Government hasnt done anything (or have they?) on this front. At least the tourism dept should have seen the enormous tourism potential in this.
So I ask: Where was this Kerala school set up? Is it still functoning (the page suggests so!). Whatever happened to all the books that they wrote? Where is Yuktibhasa, the world's first calculus text kept? Why are there no pictures of Madhava or his students available anywhere online, despite the fact that he lived centuries after Aryabhata (whose pictures are there everywhere)?
And oh...if anybody here is good at mathematics, there's a lot of unanswered questions waiting you at Talk:Madhava of Sangamagrama.

- I first read about this three or four years back at http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/Projects/Pearce/index.html. A whole chapter is dedicated for Kerala alone. Pathetic that they don't teach us any of this at school. Tintin (talk) 05:20, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Phew! So it wasnt just me afterall. Any idea about the latter part of my rant? About the status of the school and all.. Also, it certainly wasnt called Kerala school of Mathematics and Astronomy. Any idea what the Malayalam name was?-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK09:19, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

1960s Famine
The Bengal famine of 1943 article claims that there has never been a famine in India since Independence. However, I maintain that there was a famine in Kerala sometime during the 1960s (late 60s-early 70s?). For that reason, I edited all parts of the article claiming that India has never had a single famine since then.
Jayanta Sen has reverted my edits because he wants numbers to prove that there really was a famine and not just a shortage of rice. Does anybody have any written sources concerning the number of Malayalees who died as a result of the famine? (Snehamulla, Vijayan :))--Kuaichik 02:29, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- According to my dad, there was a major flood in the late 1950s or the early 1960s, and Kerala experienced severe shortage of food. America immediately offered maize to prevent a famine from occurring. Hence, my dad is of the opinion that there was no famine, in the actual sense of the word (as far as he remembers). The event did turn into a big political issue, though, with the commies alleging ulterior motives behind America's move.-- thunderboltz(Deepu) 06:47, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- That's the one I'm talking about. Appa claims that the Americans sent (among other things?) much flour, and to this day, he personally prefers American flour to Indian flour. He says that if the Americans had not sent food supplies, "many more people would have died." Many more? Does that mean...that people already had died due to a shortage of food before the Americans acted? Just an idea. You and your dad are probably right, though. Sometimes I take Appa's statements too literally. And I'm sure it was part of the American anti-communist effort; if I'm not much mistaken, the American-backed reactionary movement in Kerala began around the same time. --Kuaichik 15:17, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I remember my father and my mother talking about a famine in the 60s. I still remember it because my mother said that she had to eat Chappati the whole time, instead of rice. rohith 12:00, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

The fellow is on a rampage. He has removed tags from Unnithan Thambi, Samanthan etc.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kuntan (talk • contribs) .
- A prod, if removed, should not be reinforced on. This means that the deletion proposal is contested. The article should then be sent to WP:AfD.-- thunderboltz(Deepu) 10:31, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- I did it out of sheer ignorance. Now, what should I do about it? I was misled by somebody's comment on another user's page about unmindful detagging not noticing the case was different. .4.(I don't how I can get the link of the specific section.) Will someone care to remove the tag or should I do it myelf? Which is the proper thing to do? I don't have the least doubt about the vandalising purpose of the fellow who I said was on a rampage. He removed the tags without rhyme or reason. However, since I went out of way to re-insert the tags, it needs to be undone. Thampi, Samanthan and Unnithan are the articles thus re-tagged. Kuntan 12:32, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- That is fine, Kuntan. Just send the articles to WP:AfD if you strongly feel they need to be deleted. Since the prod was contested, you need to gather concensus from the community now. Since you've placed other articles there, I gather you are familiar with the process.
- Linking to a particular section is easy. To link to the "City's Importance and Future prospects" section on the Thiruvananthapuram article, simply give the link as Trivandrum#City's_Importance_and_Future_prospects-- thunderboltz(Deepu) 06:44, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Disgusting
The Kerala users need to be ashamed of the article Nair. The "savarna" Nairs (how they got that varna!) think certain sub-castes which bear the name Nair are so inferior that they should not be mentioned along with those NSS- Okayed creamy Nairs. So they won't allow edits which list those "inferior" sub-castes along with the "noble" strata. They have condescendingly given those "untouchables" a general category of "others" and very particularly mention that they (the others) don't have anything to do with the "above mentioned Nairs" and also that they have been "raised in rank" "to serve Nairs" See the following excerpt.
"Others
These were people who were initially Avarna castes but later raised in rank and made to serve Nairs and other forward castes. However the above mentioned Nairs never maintained any social contact with them and practised untouchability. Due to their economic and social backwardness, they are today reserved in the OBC (Other Backward Classes) List." I am not familiar enough with Wiki to ascertain which policies this disgusting article violates. But I am sure this is barbaric and goes against the grain of humaninsm. Delete / Merge
I am presenting some deletion/merge proposals here. While I am keen to know the opinion of users from Kerala, feedback from any user is welcome.
- Malayalam words as redirects: http://en.wikipedia.org is an English encyclopedia. When someone intends to search for some information here, that person has to search in English. The guidelines regarding article titles are applicable to redirects as well (WP:NAME.: “ Name your pages in English and place the native transliteration on the first line of the article unless the native form is more commonly recognized by readers than the English form.”) So are these redirects necessary : Muringakkaya ,Thakkali ,Puli ,Matthan ,Kurumulaku,Payar,Ulli ,Vendakka ,Sarkara ,Veluthulli ,Vellarikka ,Mottakkoosu ,Kaipakka ,Vazhakka,Kumbalanga ,Kayam. ( These are all Malayalam words) Are we going to create redirects for all articles in all languages?
- List of Places: These are necessary and it helps users. But it should be arranged in a manner to help search easier. Will it help if we randomly create lists like these : Pilgrimage centres in Kannur district, Places of Interest in Kannur district , Places near Kannur town , Important Places in Payyanur Area. These are not stand alone lists. If a user wants to find a place in Kannur, (s)he will first visit the page Kannur. No one will try search “Places near ABC", etc. So my suggestion is that, associated with each District page, we maintain some lists: List of Important places in ABC, List of Educational Institutions in ABC, List of Hospitals in ABC, etc. (But not Pilgrimage centres in ABC, Institutions of Higher Learning in ABC, Hindu Temples in ABC, etc. ) These should be linked to the relevant section of the page of ABC. The lists can then be divided into different sections. Eg: List of Important places in ABC into List of tourist places in ABC, List of pilgrimage centers in ABC. List of Educational Institutions in ABC into List of engineering colleges in ABC, List of Universities ABC etc. If any of these sections become too large, (then and then only) we can develop it as a new list. This should then be linked to the parent list and a brief description should also be given in the parent list. This is necessary not only to maintain a style but to make navigation (for users) and contribution (for editors) easier. Regarding the lists that I have seen, I have this suggestion..
- Merge these into one and subdivide: Important Places near Thrissur City, Places in Thrissur Rural, Places of Worship near Thrissur City, Hindu Temples in Thrissur Rural. (Not that there is no article on Thrissur City or Thrissur Rural. (There is no need either.) These terms are not defined. So lists like Places in Thrissur Rural lack any context)
- Merge these into one and subdivide: Institutions of Higher Education in Thrissur Rural, Educational Institutions in Thrissur City
- Merge these into one and subdivide: Pilgrimage centres in Kannur district , Places of Interest in Kannur district , Places near Kannur town , Important Places in Payyanur Area
- Merge these into one and subdivide: Pilgrimage centres in Ernakulam district , Pilgrimage centres near Ernakulam town , Places of interest in Ernakulam district , Places of interest in and around Ernakulam
- Rename/ Merge to Educational Institutions in Ernakulam: Institutions of Higher Learning in Ernakulam Town
- Delete : Nearby places to Kozhencherry.
- Place names: I do not know whether there is any accepted policy regarding notability of places. (there is a proposal WP:LOCAL). Even in the absence of any specific guideline, we have to keep in mind that every such artcle cretaed has to esablsh its notbility. That is, there cannot be articles just about any place . We can discuss to generate some (Kerala)specific informal guidelines in this regard. In the meantime, I have this suggestion. Do not create articles with just one line (ABC is a small village in XYZ). If you expect some one else to develop it, wait for that person to create it as well. If the place is notable, you will be able to contribute at least five or six sentences. (in conformity with : “wikipedia is not a directory”WP:NOT )
- I am also interested to see some justification for the existence of the following articles/ redirects in wikipedia: Procession of caparisoned elephants , The processions of richly caparisoned elephants, Kallu Shap , Toddy from coconut tree, Brahman's
It is possible that some of these suggestiions were discussued earlier. There could also be some technical reasons ( as in the case of redirects) for keeping these. I am presenting this here to know it. Please don’t take offence if you had contributed to any of these article I mentioned. My only concern is to maintain wikipedia as an ENCYCLOPEDIA. From the experience in a previous AFD discussion, I also request you to tell ( in case you intend to justify) why these articles should be kept as per the wikipedia policies. Please remember that, not everything that is useful, can be put in wikipeida. (WP:NOT). Some of them may be suited to Wiktionary, Wikinews , Yellowikis or Wikitravel. Clt13 10:20, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- I see that Procession of caparisoned elephants and The processions of richly caparisoned elephants exist no more. Clt13 05:45, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- In this context, I would like to request users dealing with Kerala related contents to refrain from creating stupid articles, adding unintelligent information and using uneducated language. I have in mind articles like these: Marmam, Pudiyankam-Kattusseri Vela,G. K. Mani, IFFK, Vatakara, Govindapuram, Kozhikode, & co. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kundan After Sundown (talk • contribs)

Project directory
Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 15:17, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

The article S. Jithesh was speedy deleted per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/S. Jithesh (recreation of deleted content) and the page was protected. The alleged sockpuppetry/meatpuppetry [7] second deletion nomination (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/S. Jithesh (2nd nomination)) only raised doubts.
However, User:Devapriya insists that he is famous in Kerala.
She has provided some links to prove her point:

- [9]: Again, anybody can sign up and create a profile here.

- Chintha.com: I'm not sure about this one. But from the website: "Chintha.com depends heavily on the resources of many voluteers. They are contributing their time and energy to create content"
However, I understand that not every notable person has an online presence. So, I wanted to know from Keralites: Is this person is really notable or not?. Group War on Art and Literature
. Hello Utcurschsir , the campaign of some Kerala Wikipedians against S. Jithesh and his popular cartoon Magazine Chiricheppu is already started. U can read it from their talkpages. The magazine is such a sort. It publishes Political satire and social criticism. It achieved lot of enemies...! Actually They are not against S. Jithesh. They know he is notable. Actually they are attacking his Cartoon Magazine. This Campaign has been started before months. Check the talk pages of Tintin, Gluewhale, Ageo. In Kerala wikipedians there are two groups. One group loves art and literature. Others hate! Devapriya 15:05, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Since my name has repeatedly been dragged into it, I'll comment on it once more. This will probably be my last post on this topic, and I am no longer going to bother whether it is re-created or not. It has been suggested by the Jithesh supporters that I hold some personal agenda against him, and was indirectly accused of triggering the checkuser. I didn't initiate the checkuser request and have no idea who tipped Dmcdevit. I had not even heard the name of Jithesh before August - if I had, chances are that I would have suggested keeping the article.
I first noticed the creation of this article in early August as documented in Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_India/Kerala#S.Jithesh. I wouldn't probably have bothered the addition of yet another vanity article unless he added his name among famous cartoonists and caricaturists. Since I wasn't sure of his notability or that of Chiricheppu, (I typically spend three or four days every month in Kerala and the rest outside), I asked the other Malayali wikipedians whose judgement I value.
- According to Raghu, "both the cartoonist and the CHIRICHEPPU seems to be highly non-notable"
- Deepu commented that "Chiricheppu fails the notablity test drastically"
- Gluewhale said that "the magazine exists and is available in "pettikkadas". But this definitely should not warrant him any merit. The magazine may be popular with the uneducated masses but he is not a renowned cartoonist as he claims. In any case the article is an advertisement."
This was all before the AfD started.
See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chiricheppu and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/S. Jithesh. Five regular Malayali editors (incl myself) commented in the former and each one had the same opinion. On my trips to Kerala, I twice checked whether I could get a copy of the magazine to see what it looks like. The results can be found here and here. I checked for Chiricheppu in the city where I live as well but couldn't find it, while Hasyakairali, another Malayalam comic magazine, is available.
When the Afd started, new users began to appear arguing that both the articles be kept. I won't go into that. My first interaction with Nileena was this. I never got a reply to the yes or no question.
That's about it from my side. As said earlier, this is not worth wasting any more of my time. I wrote this long post just to make clear that I have no "hidden agenda" or personal dislike for him, and that whatever I did was always in good faith. Tintin (talk) 14:14, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
A doubt...?
Please see this ![12] U will say that all the persons listed here are notable ....except one .... ? I know it very well...! But references are references..! I used to contribute on Arts and literature only
All my contributions are on art and literature related subjects. I strongly believe that I have enough knowledge in these subjects.I think no other Kerala wikipedian has created this much article on art and literature. I have done more than 500 hundred edits in art related subjects.I have no doubt on the notability of S. Jithesh. Tintin1107 is an expert in sports related subjects. I agree that. I feel great respect towards him because his knowledge in sports related subject is so vast. That's why I honoured him a barnstar. But I'm sorry to say he is very poor in art related or literature related subjects. In a talk with user Ageo he says that he dont know [Prakash Shetty]. 13. Dear Mr. Tintin, those who is ignorant about Prakash Shetty dont have a right to participate in a discussion on Cartoon. I think I have no right to participate in a talk on cricket. I'm ignorant about cricket. I doubt whether Ageo is a keralite? He hasn't heard about Yesudasan or Gireesh Puthenchery! A real wonder!!!! What kind of Malayali...? I dont know why u are personally against S. Jithesh. Anyway you have personal agenda against him. That I'm sure. I 'm sure Cartoon lovers of Kerala may not have any doubt on his notability. U too know him very well. But u hate him or his magazine..? All ur imputations against me are baseless.. But I promoted many journalists and artist to visit and edit wikipedia inorder to improve it. Most of them hesitated, but a few asked me about the tachniques of editing. I helped them. For eg. Mr. Joshy George. U can watch him everyday in Jeevan.t.v.'s Harithakeralam pgm and in Asianet Cable Vision's Sesham Visesham. He has a regular column in Rashtadeepika Cenema . We are genuine persons. We are ready to exhibit the scanned copy of election commissioners identity card...? Can u...?If u r genuine I,'m ready to clear all ur doubts. Anyway watch the news paper cuttings. On the time when the debates were going on Mathrubhumi daily published his comment on an art related topic. I'm in search of those news cuttings. Now see this...? [14],[15] These are news cuttings from Desabhimani daily and Indian express daily. But I still believe that I'm playing violin in front of a deaf and blind man. But I cant sit mum without saying a word against injustice and egoclash. Nileena joseph 06:01, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey Nileena. From the images of newspaper cutting you have uploaded, it looks like S Jitesh is notable enough. Why everything happened the way it happened was because of the way things related to the article S Jitesh unfolded. When it was initially created it looked like sort of pushing the subject of the article. (Jitesh's name was added to list of famous Keralite and Nairs , A user named Cartoonist Jitesh editing the article etc). All this made it look like some vanity article. This happens many times in wikipedia and since Tintin was maintining the India related deletion sorting for long, he know that well. So when he saw this article he posted the message in Kerala notice board. That time I had never heard of Jitesh, so google search was the only way of finding it out. All the sources that I had got was not credible. so I also suggested that it be deleted. Then after it was deleted all of a sudden new users coming and editing these articles would make anybody suspicious that these are socks.
- One more thing is that wikipedia as it says is not a democracy. So if you can provide adequete proof of the notability of the person, you don't need other peoples to support you. The person who closes the AFD does not look at how many ayes and nays are there but the arguements and the references. So I would say that we leave aside all this past tensions and start editing to make the articles related to Kerala better.

Only to those who have good reading habits in Malayalam.
[16] Those who know Malayalam may read the above said article. As we all know 'Malayalam' Weekly is so popular. Have u ever read the article 'Jeevitham Enne Enthu Padippichu'. That noted column is compiled by former deputy chief secretary- T. N. Jayachandran.I.A.S. Every week Malayalam weekly publishes the visions of notable persons from different walks of life. It is a hit column. Only notable persons are allowed to write in that particular column. The above link is the scanned copy of that column. In kerala wikipedia somebody thinks that a person who had played in just one oneday cricket is highly notable. But an artist who had drawn more than 10000 bookcovers and cartoons are non notable. I dont understand such things. They will comment Kottakkal Sivaraman is non notable and Ayyappa Baiju is highly notable. Amitabh Batchan is notable but Harivamsarai Batchan (the great poet in Marathi)is non notable. Usually encyclopedias are edited by experts in the concerned subjects.Unfortunately in wikipedia it is by teenage computer professionals. They know about icecreams, munch, cricket and commercial films . May I ask a Question...? How a person can judge cartoons and caricatures if he is ignorant about Prakash Shetty, Ajith Ninan, Ravi Sankar or E.P.Unni...? Just read...read...read.... Reading contemperory Literary periodicals is the only medicine to solve ignorance in post modern literature and art. Also have a watch....! Doordarsan's Nisagandhi, Asianet's On Record, Jeevan T.V's Njan....etc! I don't think thatChintha.comis publishing the bio of non notable persons. It's a site created by eminent journalists. * [17]: This is a directory, which publishes the biography of artists . It willnot publish the biography of any layman...! If anyone is doubtful please try...!My humple request is that experts from various fields must come and edit wikipedia. Or otherwise this site willnot improve. Stupidity and ego clash will kill wikipedia. I think this site is not for just cricket related articles...! There are hundreds of art lovers....! Devapriya 14:44, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Google hits must not be taken as a yardstick in Asian related AfD's
Google hits must not be taken as a sole yardstick in Asian related AfD's. Newspapers of Vernacular Languages may have millions of readership. For example, in India every state has its own language. There are more than 20 widely speaking native languages in India. But the news reports from the newspapers of such languages are not available in google search.Take the case of Malayala Manorama Newspaper. Currently this Malayalam language newspaper has a readership of over 9 million, with a circulation base of over 1.4 million copies according to Audit Beureu of Circulations. Manorama is one of the India's largest selling and most widely read news paper. There are more than 50 such newspapers in India. News reports from such dailies are not available in google eventhough it have millions of readership. But news reports from English dailies with 1000 or 2000 copies are available in google search. It is really misleading...Isn't it...? In this context of notability tests based on google hits may be a worthless, foolish effort. In such circumstances we must consider the words of native wikipedians with more importance. May I know ur valuable opinion ……? Nileena joseph (Talk|Contribs) 05:55, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
