Mormon foodways
Hi, I've been working on a page on my sandbox on Mormon foodways. I think it's almost ready to publish (I still need to write the lead though). I haven't written any food pages before. Is "Mormon foodways" okay as a title? It's not different enough from midwestern food to be its own cuisine, according to my colleague in Mormon folklore. A recent book on the subject of Utah foods called it "Utah food traditions." Right now I'm also thinking I should get rid of the "bread" section and put it under "Utah pioneers - processing". Some information on the page could be appropriate on Rocky Mountain cuisine, a page which is currently focused on the Canadian rocky mountain cuisine. What are your thoughts? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 18:25, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
- update, you can read this page at Mormon foodways. I did work the bread section into the other sections. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:22, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
Template:WikiProject Food and drink cannot be used inside Template:WikiProject banner shell with some parameters
It results in the page landing in Category:Pages where expansion depth is exceeded.
You can see this in this old revision of Talk:Mascarpone, which was reverted with the next edit. The call to {{WikiProject Food and drink}} looks like this: {{WikiProject Food and drink|class=Start|importance=mid |cheese=yes}}
Even without the "shell" it has a template expansion depth of 37, which is right up against the limit of 40, as shown in the source-code view of the "old revision" link above. Search for Highest expansion depth: 37/40 to find the parser profiling data. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:13, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Help updating ADM article re: cocoa products
Hello!, David here with Archer-Daniels-Midland Company. I've posted a request at Talk:ADM (company) to update the article re: cocoa products. The Products section suggests the company still produces cocoa products even though ADM's cocoa business was sold in 2015 (as mentioned in the article's text). I'm not editing the article myself to comply with conflict of interest rules, and hoping an editor or two here might be able to help update the page for me. Thank you! - Hi again! The above request has been answered, but I've since shared two additional requests at Talk:ADM (company) to update basic product information:
- Might a project member have a moment to take a look and update the page on my behalf? Thanks! ADM DavidW (talk) 23:40, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello, |
Food Angel - Points for improvement
The article is concise and clearly written. However, the information provided is brief and seems incomplete. The page is underdeveloped, so I suggest the following improvements:
- More information can be added to this page by adding information that is posted on their website and by updating the information already written.
- A bigger variety of sources can be looked into to add relevant and reliable information.
- The article could also use some visuals, such as the logo of the organization.
- Information needs to be added about their different services, their efforts in education, their partners, and the impact they have on society. These could be turned into additional sections, except their services which need to be added to the existing section services.
- The article includes a clear introductory sentence, but the brief description does not include the content of the article's major sections. The lead section is also too detailed.
- The limited content of the article is relevant to the topic, but not up-to-date. Some services are missing and the main structure of the organization is also not included or explained. The different services that the organization provides are briefly described, however, they could be expanded on.
- The facts in the article are backed up by secondary sources. There are sources that are no longer available, and the article contains sources such as news papers and websites which seem random.
- The article is concise and easy to read. It does not contain grammatical or spelling mistakes, and is broken down in logical sections. However, the flow of the writing is less appealing
- The article is rated as Start-Class and as Low-importance. It is part of the WikiProject Food and Drink, WikiProject Hongkong, and WikiProject Organizations. Maybe by adding it to a different WikiProject related to non-profit organizations the article will remove more attention and might get a better status.

Tom Aikens
Someone his full busy with Tom Aikens (chef), Tom Aikens (restaurant) and Draft:Tom Aikens (restaurant). He originally proposed to merge the article about the chef and the restaurant, to which I objected as both are clearly notable. Now he is mingling the two, adding a prior career of Aikens to the restaurant and adding a case about theft in the restaurant to the article about the chef. Beside that, he added a piece about what happened with the building after the restaurant closed down. To my opinion irrelevant.
The discussion at Talk:Tom Aikens#Tom Aikens (restaurant) is stalling, so more eyes needed. The Banner talk 18:08, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi everyone. I'm not a member of this project, but I do (unofficially) co-run the Wikipedia:Triple Crown award. As you'll see at that page, a specific WikiProject Food and drink Triple Crown was created (before my time), though we have yet to have any people nominate themselves or others for that award. If you have met the criteria (been a major contributor to a DYK, a good article and a piece of featured content that are all under the scope of this project, please feel free to nominate yourself for the award, and maybe you'll be the first winner. Further rules/clarification is available at the awards page. Outline of food preparation categories
Is there a better term for the "Baking" category here? Otherwise, the outline seems to imply baking is a catch-all term for any method that isn't grilling or frying and includes things like steaming, pressure cooking, and infusion. 93 (talk) 14:12, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

See Talk:List of breads#Accuracy and sources - some of these are ridiculous - posted after I saw a complaint that someone had added white bread as originating in the United States. Doug Weller talk 14:24, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
- Tangent to this, I've found Bread roll and Bun (and their counterparts List of bread rolls, List of buns) to be vague, and each article references the other. In Bread roll: "There are many terms for a bread roll within the United Kingdom depending on region. These names include... bun" and in Bun: "A bun is a... roll." From reading what's in the article, I'd say that "Bun" is far more encompassing and could be the target of a merge, however both are inadequately sourced. Since so many examples are in non-English, I also question the categorization, since the original language might have a special distinction that is unique from how buns/rolls are defined in English-speaking places.
- I think a merge would be good, but if there's a better idea, I'm all ears. Cheers, Estheim (talk) 17:59, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Pastilla
Hello,
I noticed that the article about Pastilla contains many allegations that are not supported by historical facts, chief of which the claim that Pastilla is an Algerian dish.
One of the contributors to the article makes the unfounded claim that Pastilla was introduced into Morocco when some Algerian families emigrated to Tetouan upon the occupation of the city of Algiers in 1830 by the French. To give a semblance of credibility to his/her claim, the author put a footnote that talks about Baklawas and not about Pastilla. It has been an established fact that Pastilla is Moroccan origin.
I would highly appreciate it if you do the necessary to prevent impostors from claiming what does not belong to them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SamirJawhara (talk • contribs) 22:01, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- Note: SamirJawhara has been edit warring, removing content without a valid explanation and persistently censoring content on the Morocco World News article. Non-diffusing categories
I created both Canadian women and men chef subcategories. I did so after seeing that American ones exist. Now generally, parents categories should not be filled with articles that can be subcategorized. Non-diffusing category templates are seemingly redundant as well. Only specific articles that can't be subcategorized should be in the main category. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 21:39, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Mr. C.C.: please read the WP:DUPCAT guideline that says "Subcategories defined by gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality should almost always be non-diffusing subcategories". The two categories Category:Canadian male chefs and Category:Canadian women chefs are defined by gender and should be non-diffusing of Category:Canadian chefs by this rule.--Mvqr (talk) 15:20, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Mvqr: You didn't follow that. You added, then removed Canadian chefs category from other articles. So if that's the "guideline," you're not following it. Oh and it says "almost." Take that into account. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 17:03, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Mr. C.C.: I did follow that. I added by mistake Category:Canadian chefs to articles that contained the diffusing category Category:Canadian television chefs. I then realised my mistake and corrected it for articles in the diffusing sub-category. Category:Canadian male chefs and Category:Canadian women chefs should be non-diffusing, and articles containing them should contain either Category:Canadian chefs or the diffusing sub-category Category:Canadian television chefs.--Mvqr (talk) 06:26, 6 December 2021 (UTC) Fix ping @Mr. C.C.:.--Mvqr (talk) 06:27, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Sources
Hi all,
It doesn't look like this page is very active, but I thought I'd give it a shot.
I have recently discovered that the page Kettle corn is completely unsourced. I'd really like to improve it. Of course, the difficulty is finding sources. Simply searching for history of kettle corn just produces a lot of companies that have blog posts about the history, with no sources.
So how can I find some better historical sources for this page? I understand that it's difficult to find the exact origin of foods, and that's fine. But I'd really like to improve the page. I don't normally work in food-related pages, so I'm a little out of my depth. Really would appreciate any advice. Apathyash (talk) 01:46, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
- Apathyash, often the best way to find good information about a food item familiar to the English-speaking world is to find specialty cookbooks that focus on that item. Seeking advice on "medaillon" the round cut of meat
What I first thought was a simple, obvious, edit has become a contended discussion here. While there is no need for you to get into the specifics of the discussion, I could use some assistance on a couple points.
- Can anyone locate an article or article section that discusses a "medaillon"? My search has not turned up anything, but this is far from my subject of expertise. Perhaps someone here who is more familiar with these articles can help find something appropriate.
- The anglicized spelling, "medallion", has three meanings, of which the round cut of meat is the third. If you were to create an article on this subject, what would you name it? I proposed Medallion (meat cut), but I feel it may be a bit clunky and odd. Others have proposed Medallion (cooking) and Medallion (food), but a medaillon is neither a method of cooking nor a kind of food. It's a cut of meat. Does anyone have a better suggestion for the proper disambiguator? Perhaps you have a standard term that I'm not aware of. This is out of my league, so I thought it would be good to seek the opinion of those better versed than I.
Thanks much! PoundTales (talk) 11:13, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello! I'm a COI editor here on behalf of John Antioco, whose Wiki page I'm trying to improve. Mr. Antioco has had a robust career that includes time as CEO of Taco Bell, P.F. Chang's, and Red Mango. He has also, through his investment firm JAMCO, purchased a controlling stake in restaurant chains such as Friendly's and TGI Fridays. The current version of his page hardly includes any information on this, so I put together a new Career section that covers those details as well as his tenure at other large companies like Blockbuster and 7-Eleven. I was wondering if anyone on this WikiProject would help me out by reviewing my draft? It's available in full on my user page, and you can see my initial Career edit request on the John Antioco talk page. Any assistance would be much appreciated! Thank you. Fermented tea
Hello everybody,
I opened a new discussion on Talk:Fermented_tea, proposing to rename the page.
In my contribution, I present the standard English nomenclature of tea used in China since 2014, point out some possible misunderstandings caused by the use of the term "fermented tea", propose to change the name of the page into "Dark tea" or "post-fermented tea”, and suggest to create a disambiguation page for "Fermented tea". --Laozha (talk) 05:53, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

Page for generic, non-WFP-related "high energy biscuits"?
With myself staying in Shanghai chewing some wheat-based emergency rations, I realized that there does not really appear to be a page for this sort of thing on Wikipedia. What want is a generic term similar to how the terms hardtack and energy bar are used, describing a product similar to the high energy biscuit but without the WFP-mandated nutrition baseline. It's clearly not a hardtack in the traditional sense (not tooth-breaking, not leavened), but also not a normal energy bar in the snack-sports-food sense.
Talk:emergency rations has Andrewa (sorry for bothering you!) mentioning these things. A common English term on Amazon.com for these things seems to be "emergency food bars" or "survival food bars". In Mandarin we just call it 压缩饼干 "compressed biscuits", which also applies to hardtack.
Just to complicate things a bit:
- Exported 压缩饼干 seem to use the HEB term on amazon.sg.
- Not all "HEB" HEB are unleavened bricks. Google Image search produces quite some variety in European and UN offerings. I guess they are using the WFP definition, so it's fair.
Artoria2e5 🌉 17:47, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- No bother! We are a collaboration. I'll see whether I can find more time for this, and thanks for the research and ping. Andrewa (talk) 05:39, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

Coffeehouses vs cafės
Café redirects to Coffeehouse, should then also Category:Cafés and all if its subcategories be merged/renamed to Category:Coffeehouses? Marcocapelle (talk) 06:55, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- I would say no. The two terms are strong in different countries. It might be best to merge to Category:Cafés and coffeehouses. How notable vast swathes of these actually are is a question. Johnbod (talk) 13:52, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

No notable restaurants for various types of cuisine?
I'm a bit surprised Wikipedia has no entries for notable restaurants know for serving various types of cuisine. For example:
- There are no notable restaurants serving Category:Bolivian cuisine?
- There are no notable restaurants serving Category:Costa Rican cuisine?
- There are no notable restaurants serving Category:Ecuadorian cuisine?
- Category:Nicaraguan cuisine?
- Category:Uruguayan cuisine?
This short list focuses on Latin American cuisine, but I could keep going across food genres. Would any project members be interested in helping to create entries about notable restaurants for some of the less-covered types of cuisine? ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:11, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Improving the page on writer Florence White
Hi, I'm Andrea Broomfield, an English professor and food historian who has made extensive edits to what was the very brief entry on the food writer, Florence White. I am very new to editing _Wikipedia_ and nervous about doing this work, but I also know that it is vital to participate in this project. Currently, the entry is rated as "Start Class--Low Importance", and it had at one time been proposed to have the entry deleted. It is unclear to me how one raises the page's status. I would like to continue to add to the entry; however, the vast majority of my information on White comes from her autobiography (heavily cited in the entry), and from there, the synopsis of that autobiography that I have written for my own blog. If editors with more experience have suggestions, I would appreciate the advice/encouragement/corrections. Thanks, Andrea Abroomfield (talk) 19:07, 3 November 2022 (UTC)
- A belated welcome @Abroomfield: and don't be nervous, we've all got to start somewhere! First off - you should always link to the article you're talking about from a project page, it makes it easier for people to work out what you're talking about, especially in this case where there are multiple people with the same name. I've done a bit of tidying up - it's generally good practice to include an infobox whenever possible (it helps the likes of Google extract key information), and you should use British English when writing about British subjects per WP:ENGVAR, so eg tumour rather than tumor. Not a biggy. As far as assessment goes, anyone (including you) can assess up to B level (bearing in mind the assessment guidelines) by editing the template on the Talk page (as I just did) - it's not far off a B at the moment, but normally you'd expect a picture on a biography and it could do with breaking up into more sections. Generally you want to be looking at sections of no more than 4-5 paragraphs or so, you're not writing an academic paper. Also the introduction should very briefly summarise the whole article (doesn't need references as any facts should be referenced later on), but a clause or sentence to sum up each section is the ideal.
- I hate the way most projects use the word "importance" for assessment when really what they meant is "priority for that particular project to work on" - a big sprawling project like this has many "general" articles which are higher priority than articles on individual aspects and people. So for instance even Cookbook is only a High, and Isabella Beeton is only a Mid. In terms of where to go next then the obvious targets are Good Article (roughly the standard of the article you'd find in a traditional encyclopedia like Britannica) and Featured Article ("Professional, outstanding, and thorough; a definitive source for encyclopedic information") - the guidelines for GA and for FA and the links therein are a good place to start. You're really not far off GA standard right now. You've clearly been looking at some of the FA articles like Jane Grigson for formatting, which is the right thing to do although the food writers have mostly been written by one editor who has some ideas that I would say are...not the norm. Have a look at a wider range of FAs such as Category:FA-Class Women writers articles to get a broader idea. One thing I would say is - always remember your reader, and don't get too lost in the detail, remember to keep the "story" flowing, it's not about listing every single fact that is possibly known about the subject. It's not great to rely so heavily on one source, particularly when it's her own writing, but I get that it's the nature of the beast to some extent.
- I can understand why you might want to make someone like White more visible, but to be honest the big things that academics can bring to Wikipedia are :
- 1) Broad background knowledge that allows them to write the general articles that are really difficult to write but which are the ones our readers are most interested in. To pick out examples - À_la_carte, Bistro, Brunch, Casserole, Seasoning and Silver_service are pretty terrible articles that are getting >200,000 views per year in most cases; Delicatessen is not much better and gets ~500k views per year. Then there are others like Food museum which is an example of a topic that's important to the project without getting so many pageviews. And just generally it would be great to get any article in Category:Top-importance Food and drink articles up to GA level.
- 2) The other big advantage academics have is access to sources which allows you to add the WP:REFERENCES which are critical to a good Wikipedia article but usually the biggest weakness. It's particularly important in making the step up to GA
- Somewhat specific to this project is that everybody thinks they know about food, and so the general articles here tend to lack the rigour that an academic can bring.
- Anyway, hope this helps and ... have fun! FlagSteward (talk) 16:08, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
