Jen Jones had a press release that was reported by TSN et al that Jill Officer is moving to alt and Jocelyn will join her team. 96.55.104.236 (talk) 04:34, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Kristin MacCuish

[edit]

Move page to Kristin Gordon? She's registered for PointsBet on Curl Canada as Gordon and her jersey also says Gordon. TracyFleuryFan (talk) 17:39, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well, they'll be calling her Kristin Gordon at the PointsBet event, so I won't oppose a move.-- Earl Andrew - talk 20:37, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian Open Slam

[edit]

With the Canadian Open moving to November this year all of the links to 2024 Canadian Open (curling) unfortunately have to be changed. I'm assuming a sufficient name would be 2024 Canadian Open (January) and 2024 Canadian Open (November) as that's consistent with what has been done in the past. Wondering if there is a quick way to have all the links changed or if it has to be done manually. TracyFleuryFan (talk) 04:10, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There may be a bot that can do it for you. You can go here to request one: Wikipedia:Bot requests -- Earl Andrew - talk 13:24, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:AWBREQ may be a more appropriate place ot make the request. meamemg (talk) 14:08, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the guidance on where to go, I really didn't want to have to do that manually.
In looking at the page for the Canadian Open, I see Rachelle Brown listed as winning the slam with Homan but on her page it isn't counted in her Grand Slam wins. Do we have a policy on when alternates are included in the win / when they are not? Just wondering since some teams compete a front-end rotation with the alternate (ex: Seol Ye-ji on Gim) and others don't. TracyFleuryFan (talk) 17:02, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Traveltheglobe listed her for some reason, but I don't think she played in any games, so she shouldn't be there. I've gone ahead and removed her. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:26, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Team Homan posted on January 11 that Rachelle would be their alternate for Canadian Open and she was on the bench during the event. Since she didn't play any games does that mean it doesn't count as a slam win for her? If she had played an end or two in round robin, would it count? Just trying to establish a rule around it for the future since it's such a grey area. TracyFleuryFan (talk) 22:33, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we have to be careful to avoid original research in determining who we should be listing. When in doubt, we should just go by whatever they list on the website (which doesn't include Brown, nor is she in the picture of the team). If we think there are other people who deserve mentioning, we need to find secondary sources to back up the assertion.-- Earl Andrew - talk 13:41, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Grand Slam Recognition

[edit]

Starting this discussion to suggest recognizing the Grand slams the way the actual GSOC recognizes them. While the defunct slams did exist, the GSOC has made it clear that they don't count towards skip and player totals.

Similar to how golf no longer recognizes the US Amateur as majors and the Grey Cups won by the Hamilton Tiger Cats prior to their merge in 1950 not being recognized by the CFL, the GSOC has set their position for a few years now that the defunct slams do not couunt towards totals. I believe wiki should follow suit with player pages. Reference can be made to the defunct slams but they no longer count. 74.12.189.170 (talk) 01:10, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just so everyone knows, this stems from a discussion at Talk:Rachel Homan. She is being credited by the media as having won the most slams of any female skip, which is technically not true, because Jennifer Jones has won a bunch of now unrecognized Slams. We do have to abide by WP:RS and WP:OR, so perhaps it's time we address this issue some way.-- Earl Andrew - talk 14:13, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If she is recognized by reliable sources as having the record, we should say so in the article. If there are other reliable sources that dispute that claim, that can be noted too either inline or in a footnote. meamemg (talk) 19:53, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Canada’s Rachel Homan claimed a record-extending 16th Grand Slam of Curling women’s title following a successful title defence in the Co-op Canadian Open.

This is directly from the grand slam of curling website. Only current slams are recognized, not previous defunct events. 74.12.189.170 (talk) 22:23, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, Jennifer Jones is not recognized as having this record anywhere. Even the world curling website acknowledged she has 17 event wins, but only 10 current slams.

The text from the World Curling page is directly taken from the Wikipedia article on Jennifer Jones by the way, so we do have a history of distinguishing between recognized and no longer recognized slams.-- Earl Andrew - talk 22:29, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yes but Rachel Homan should be recognized as having the most slams considering the owner and governing body of the GSOC has chosen to recognize the series this way. 74.12.189.170 (talk) 23:41, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't disagree, as long as it states something along the lines of "currently recognized slams". -- Earl Andrew - talk 03:16, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A bit late to the convo here, but one thing I would caution against is using reporting straight from the GSOC itself when making this decision. In particular, any source from the GSOC itself fails the independence criteria of WP:RS. Per WP:SCHOLARSHIP, we should be looking for secondary sources. This means, for example, news articles published by unaffiliated parties (i.e. not news articles that just republish GSOC's in-house reporting). Do we have examples of such secondary sources? Do they agree with one another, or is there dispute between which Slams are recognized? If the former, we should go with the secondary source consensus; if the latter, we should state that.
