I think the introduction should include that it's also known as Madras. Many people have never heard of Chennai but have of Madras; at school in The Netherlands we learn Madras, not Chennai. I don't understand why it's protected more than 2 weeks before it'll be on the mainpage, but I propose to change the lead to: Chennai, also known as Madras, is the capital of.... I presume there's some reason behind dropping "also known as Madras". If not, please include that. I could do that myself, but am waiting for the reason. May be, we can drop the link to the Indian renaming controversy article, if that is what bothers us. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:06, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"Also known as" lists don't make particularly good writing - they tend to make for choppy writing that doesn't flow well - so I exclude them from main page blurbs. Raul654 15:05, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lead image[edit]

I feel that Image:ChennaiCentral2.JPG would be a better choice for a lead picture than the current Image:Chennai.annasalai.JPG, which is too light-coloured. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 11:10, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the change, Raul. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:07, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

I agree with Gerrit on this issue. Internationally, it is still referred to as Madras (CNN, BBC, Enc. Britannica). The rest mention both names. It might not be wise omitting the "also known as Madras" part. -- Bnitin 10:01, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, virtually everyone outside of India still calls this city Madras. We would be losing the interest of a lot of people by not mentioning "Madras".--Pharos 06:39, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
