Related RFC close[edit]

I closed Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_92#Differentiating_reference_syntax_in_the_editing_window. per a request at WP:ANRFC. Since there is no talk page to that archive and this is related, I'm putting the close here. The RFC at Village Pump showed consensus for some type of differentiation. The nature of the differentiation (colors, intensity, etc.), the scope (all syntax, only refs, etc.), and the settings (default for all, gadget, etc.) were not adequately scrutinized and consensus on those points cannot be determined from that RFC. I hope this broader RFC will shed light on those points. MBisanz talk 22:17, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Context with VisualEditor work[edit]

Hey all,

In our work on the VisualEditor at the Wikimedia Foundation, though our intent is to allow people to edit almost anything without knowing wikitext at all, we have in the (long-term) roadmap a better wikitext editor as fall-back for items that cannot be edited using VE itself. One of the things that will be "better" about this editor is indeed syntax highlighting (amongst others - most notably, presenting for editing only the wikitext of the block that needs it). The timeline for delivery - even assuming all goes well - puts our syntax-highlighted editor well into 2013, so I'm sure you'd want to do this through some other way beforehand, but I thought I should highlight (ho ho) the context.

Yippee! So there will be a good solution for those of us who don't want to new VisualEditor! David1217 What I've done 17:51, 26 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bugzilla report added for syntax highlighting based on RfC[edit]

Hey folks. Not sure how many people are watching this now that it's closed, but I figured it made sense to put notice here. Given the wide consensus for the implementation of some syntax highlighting by default (per the Village Pump discussion and RfC), I have submitted a report to bugzilla to see if it can be done. You may be interested in participating in or watching the outcome of that discussion here. Thanks, I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 18:39, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
