Questions 19 and 29
[edit]Biblioworm asks in question 29, "Please explain what you meant when you said this in question 19: "Also another idea I've been working on is, since inactive sysops get their rights stripped, inactive users should too." Are you saying that inactive users should lose their ability to even edit?" I'm not sure where to respond to this [given that I'm not cyberpower678 and can't write in the "A:" bit underneath], but the way I understood cyberpower's answer, it meant something like "inactive users with additional privileges, such as rollback or mass message senders". So the idea would be to remove extra rights from inactive users in the same way we do for admins. Of course, I could easily be wrong, but in case cyberpower doesn't get round to answering the question in time (and given that 28 questions was enough!), I thought it might be worth me trying to suggest a possible meaning for their answer. Again, I stress: I could well be wrong, but that's how I interpreted it. — Bilorv(talk)(c)(e) 18:46, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- So did I --Redrose64 (talk) 19:01, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- The very fact that he provided an ambiguous, incomplete answer IS the problem with this candidate. The tendency to not think through the consequences of their initial reaction in various situations has been their downfall in the past. With extra permissions and no checks and balances we will end up in the soup with this Admin. (or the soup will end up on us!) Leaky Caldron 19:09, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- I don't see any ambiguity. I'm not sure how a registered user even loses the ability to edit by losing a right. Only by a block could a user lose the ability to edit. So - I think we're quite safe here.--v/r - TP 19:44, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- The answer was in the context of a question about envisaged "adminbots". Even if the answer meant what Bilorv thought it meant, this still isn't current procedure and I'm aware of no consensus that it should be (even Autoconfirmed brings a list of rights...) Bots should follow process not lead it - else we are indeed into Dr Strangelove territory: Noyster (talk), 20:09, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- Which he is aware of. That's what WP:BRFA is for. He was asked for some of his ideas, and he threw some out. Change starts with an idea.--v/r - TP 20:29, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, with an idea. Not with a shiny new bot revving up to implement an idea: Noyster (talk), 05:57, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Noyster: You go ahead and point out a single instance of Cyberpower creating a bot without it having approval. Part of the WP:BRFA process is making sure the Bot's actions have consensus. If Cyberpower wants to propose an idea, it's his choice. Quit nitpicking. If you can't do that, go troll elsewhere.--v/r - TP 06:09, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Just for the cyber record I completely reject User:TParis's accusation of trolling. Where in my 11,000+ edits is there any evidence of this? I stand by my concern, which was my primary reason for switching to an Oppose !vote: the candidate proposed to introduce a major change to procedure - depriving good-faith editors of their user rights - not through the usual channels such as Village pump or RfC, but by creating a bot to implement it and seeking approval through the bot approval process. As I argued, programming should follow agreed procedure, not lead it. A wrong approach: not just a minor slip-up but a basically wrong approach, and not one I wanted to see in an admin: Noyster (talk), 13:00, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
- The evidence is above where you persist in a nonsensical argument simply because you refuse to accept that you're wrong. Simply put, your argument has absolutely no basis in logic, reasoning, or fact and was so easily refuted that your only purpose in making such an argument was to waste time and piss people off. The definition of that? Trolling.--v/r - TP 17:23, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
- That's not what I was proposing or intending at all. I proposed a possible bot idea, that I would run by the community first before even creating the bot. I can tell you right now, that BAG would've declined my bot right there and then if I didn't have a link to a discussion that supports this bot, and quite frankly if I were a BAGger, I would decline it myself asking the filer of the BRFA to seek consensus first. It's not an uncontroversial bot for sure, and anything I deem as controversial, this idea included, I would prefer to seek consensus first before acting.—cyberpowerChat:Online 14:48, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
- We'd better end this. Of course I accept Cyberpower's assurance, now, that he wouldn't present us with a ready-made bot to do something highly controversial. A shame that User:TParis cannot accept my assurance that trolling is not something I do, here or anywhere; and if he does not wish to waste further time, he has only to stop reiterating this charge, though a withdrawal would be preferable. My concerns were sincerely held. Other readers, if any, may judge how valid they were, in the light of statements then available from candidate and nominator: Noyster (talk), 08:40, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- You're still trolling. "Of course I accept Cyberpower's assurance" - You didn't need Cyber's assurance. It's written all over the policy bot policy. Cyber couldn't do what you're suggesting even if he wanted to. Which means, you're pushing a doomsday idea that can't happen. Why? Because you weren't aware of the policy until it was pointed out and then at that point you couldn't let go of your doomsday idea without your pride taking a hit. So now you're trying to gracefully back out as if Cyber power has finally acquiesced when in reality your just clinging to any hope of saving face. You're really transparent. Please just go away now.--v/r - TP 19:07, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- Sure, I knew bots need approval, and I knew Cyberpower knew this, too. My point was... but no, I'm not going to repeat myself over again. If you really thought you'd met a troll, I'm surprised someone of your experience would keep feeding it and trying to provoke it. Goodbye: Noyster (talk), 08:38, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

- Q1 - What administrative work do you intend to take part in? Answer: .....I do have a few ideas for potential admin bots. Operating an adminbot requires the op to have the sysop bit as well. It would be truly astonishing if such a reply was not challenged considering it plainly evokes the impression that Admin. tools would be utilised to develop & promote whatever such ideas that the candidate had. [edit]Additional question from User:Beyond My Ken #28. Please explain why 40.2% of your contributions are to User Talk pages.
- Well, OK, as long as we are putting here what we think Cyberpower might answer: the obvious answer to that question is found in the statistics higher up on this page. He has made 5,973 edits to user talk space; of those, 2,067 (more than a third - 14% of his total edits) are to his own talk page, presumably replying to messages there about his tools. Another 455 are to the talk pages of TParis, his nominator, and Worm That Turned, his mentor. --MelanieN (talk) 19:05, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- The edits to my talk pages are also likely related to the tools from when I was one of the maintainers.--v/r - TP 19:43, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- If it's all the same, I'd like to hear the applicant's explanation. BMK (talk) 21:38, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Technical skills
[edit]- One trend I've noticed throughout this is that we have a few people supporting because of his "technical skills", nebulously defined and elaborated upon. As the majority of editors aren't programmers, I want to emphasise that the closing bureaucrat should take care when evaluating these opinions, as some of them may have been made by people who are not qualified to comment on how well he programs. A sample of his code is available here. There is much, much more to "technical skills" than "does this person write something that does something". Whether the praise about his code is deserved can be evaluated in its proper context by anyone with sufficient experience. →Σσς. (Sigma) 01:39, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- We're not evaluating his programming proficiency; in this context, "technical skills" means he can get things done with code, for the benefit of the project. Alakzi (talk) 01:44, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- You're one to talk, Σ. As a programmer, you refuse to acknowledge that code that gets run more often is more likely to be susceptible to the discovery of bugs. But please, keep giving us your 'programming experience'.--v/r - TP 01:50, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Just an uninvolved person stepping in - there seems to be a lot of animosity between you two - I'd love to brew you two some tea if you all would like. Just let me know. Regarding the RfA - it should be noted a great deal of the supports are about Cyberpower678's technical skills. I have some thoughts about this, feel free to read my oppose. E. - I'm afraid I don't need to be Alan Turing to say I like a computer. And I needn't be Roger Ebert to say that I did not like a movie. Cyberpower678 is proficient enough to maintain a project after the creator has departed, despite the bugs and downtime. When there is a bug, he works assiduously to squash it. This is all the evidence most of us need to ascertain his coding skills. --ceradon (talk • contribs) 01:58, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- I haven't looked at Cyberpower678's code, nor X's original code, but I'll offer a general comment about programming (and though I use his name in this example, I'm not commenting on the quality of his code, as I say it's a general comment): What's important is not necessarily that Cyberpower678 is proficient enough to maintain a project after the creator has departed, but rather that the code he writes is logical and well enough documented that someone else can maintain the project after Cyberpower678 has departed. Otherwise we could end up in a worse situation than the status quo ante. Mojoworker (talk) 03:52, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

- This entire discussion is out of place and should be moved to the Talk page. --MelanieN (talk) 02:01, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

- True, technical skills are more than writing something that does something. In this context, "more" consists of being willing to develop tools for a large, diverse, and frequently fractious group of users, many of whom are noisily confident in their own ideas of How It Oughta Be Done despite having no evident idea of how it's actually done; and being responsive to questions and concerns about those tools even when the questions are poorly posed or unnecessarily confrontational. Candidate passes on both counts. RfA isn't code review. Opabinia regalis (talk) 03:32, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
