Itagaki

Has anyone ever heard of a woman named Itagaki, a warrior who used a naginata? The source of the article is an Argentinian martial-arts web site. Fg2 11:59, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

This article is linked to from Women in combat, which says that Itagaki was also called Hangaku Gozen or Hangaku-jo. One of my co-workers, Asst Curator of Japanese Prints at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, confirms that Hangaku is a fairly famous and probably real person; definitely a character actually depicted in art and stories. According to these prints and stories, she fought in the Genpei War, possibly alongside Tomoe Gozen, one of the only other famous warrior women in Japanese history. Yeah. Sorry I couldn't come up with anything more. And, unfortunately, I think that copyright-free images of the prints could be hard to come by, as any such images would be the copyright of either the owner of the print (such as the museum) or the publisher of the book it's scanned from. I was finally able to come up with information on how to write her name, and located an article in the Japanese Wikipedia, which was enough to rewrite the English article and name it Hangaku. I turned Itagaki into a disambiguation page with three entries. Found some ukiyoe including one here but as you predicted the copyright is not promising. Fg2 05:38, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

template for deletion

I've nominated template:Japanese todofuken for deletion, see Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion#Template:Japanese_todofuken. It was used as the base for template:Japanese prefecture but is now unused and obsolete given fairly recent changes to the prefecture template. -- Rick Block (talk) 16:29, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Since WikiProject Japan has taken over most (if not all) of the project aspects of the noticeboard, I think it might be good to post a message to the talk page of anyone on the list who isn't already a participant in WP:JA. I don't see the need. The noticeboard is just useful to post up (and read up) on what's going on with Japanese articles, it doesn't attempt to shoulder any responsibility like WPJA does, so the participant list is really irrelevant.  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  09:28, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Citation needed for passage in the Ryūkyū Islands article

The Ryūkyū Islands article has the following line "After Japan occupied Ryūkyū, there was a series of massacres by the Japanese army that killed a major proportion of the Ryūkyūan population" however I could not find any sources. I don't see anything wrong with them. They're there, and they appear to function. If they were missing, you might have been trying to edit an earlier version of the article. Edit buttons don't appear for individual sections of an old version; either edit the whole article (which you do when reverting) or get the latest version (for example, by clicking the Article tab) and then you can edit sections. Was that the problem, or was there some other problem? Fg2 20:52, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I think the problem is that the section edit links are all listed at the bottom (after the infobox), and not beside each section. I tried a couple of things, by moving the pictures around. Now, the edit links are where they should be; but, the article layout may have suffered in the process. YMMV. Neier 22:03, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm currently working on a script intended to create short articles on political parties on a variety of wikipedias simultaneously. However, in order for the technique to work I need help with translations to various languages. Alleged copyright violation

A user has put a copyright violation template on the article Tourism in Japan, to which I contributed. I think the copying is in reverse, that is, the external site copied the Wikipedia article. Certainly, my contributions to the article are original. Does anyone have any further information?

If you look closely at this diff, you will see some sections that are different from the cited copyvio "source". The old rev in that diff is significant, because it is when the Travelling tips section was added, and it is not likely that both pages came up with the same format for that section independently. So, at that point, we can reasonably establish that one site copied from the other; and, since the first rev with that section on wikipedia is different than the current version on the cited page, it seems that ours was the source and gradually evolved into the current version, which is the same as what is on the cited page. On the cited page, the wording matches our version on April 11, which is not a surprise since the cited page has an updated date at the bottom for the last time they (presumably) trolled wikipedia for the info.

I copied this info to the article's talk page, so hopefully it will gete cleared up soon. Neier 22:42, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

New template/category for Japan-related articles missing kanji

I have created {{Chinese script}}, a cleanup category for articles about topics written in Chinese characters but missing that from the article (either in the text or in a template). It is based on {{Arabic}} and {{Cyrillic}}. All of the articles needing this are gathered in Category:Articles needing Chinese script. The template is designed to be able to be used for people with no knowledge of any Chinese script, and then people with a good understanding can clear the articles out of the category. I figure this could be used for Japan-related articles missing kanji, but perhaps it is better to have a separate template which would cover topics written in kana? I think many people doing the tagging would not know which script it should be written in. Rigadoun (talk) 20:45, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

I just made a cheap fix and it should appear correctly in IE and Firefox now. It's probably to do with the fact that they're using a template to display the characters with a large font.  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  05:06, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

User:Akanemoto

Hi, we've got a situation here with User:Akanemoto, who has been inserting lots and lots of navigational templates into various country articles. Not everyone agrees with this, and several people have tried to contact him on his talk page, but so far it's been difficult to communicate with him in English. Moreover, it appears that he's posting derogatory and not entirely serious comments about other countries on his talk page. I think what's really needed is for someone to speak to him in Japanese. Would anyone be able to help out?

Okura disambiguation

Hi, I'm working on creating and expanding on geography stubs in New Zealand and I've got both a river and a town called Okura. Since I'm a newbie to Wikipedia I thought I'd call on help for setting up a disambiguation page - rather than screw it up myself. There's a photo gallery on the Tokyo Web site at [1]. Don't know if it has anything you can use. The pages with the photos bear copyright notices. Of course, you could write to his office and ask permission. Fg2 21:06, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

There won't be any photos we can update for Japanese celebrity for a while. Some of you may have noticed that a few users are cracking down on fair use images of celebrity, due to an axiom in the fair use description stating that they cannot be used to simply show likeness of an individual. Since it's basically illegal to release any such images of celebrity in Japan (within Japan) as free-use, all of the "promotional images" we have been using for the last while will have to be removed, and will stay that way if the fair use documentation isn't refined to give exemption to Japanese articles.  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  01:03, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
