For deletion review[edit]

I have a photograph of a statue in his honor outside the Egmore Railway Station in Chennai, which prompted me to create the article. Would that not be reason enough to keep the article? (Its also on google maps -- PlaneMad|YakYak 03:57, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, probably not. Things may be different in India compared to the UK but over here there are statues/busts/memorial plaques etc to local people who simply wouldn't pass our notability guideline. I realise that India does like to honour its freedom fighters with statues in their home towns but the notable ones are usually also honoured by having schools, hospitals, roads and the like named after them. More problematic still is that there doesn't seem to be any actual information about the man other than a recent documentary of dubious provenance and reliability. Of course, there may be info in non-English sources but I did ask around various contacts and they were unable to find any. Does the statue have any information recorded on it? Those who prefer to keep articles might be content with as little as Azhagu Muthu Kone (dob - dod) was a freedom fighter and is commemorated with a statue at XXXX, if the statue has that info. - Sitush (talk) 11:10, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not in Chennai anymore, but will try to dig out some information through my sources. I know this is not the deletion review, but I thought I should report the existence of his statue, which is right outside one of the big railway terminals in the country -- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:08, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here is something relevant I found: P Chidambaram releases documentary film on Alagumuthu Kone -- PlaneMad|YakYak 12:14, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the documentary was discussed in the deletion talk. A problem that emerged was that even the politician who launched the documentary said that little is recorded in history about Kone. That is the crux of the problem: if little is recorded then the documentary is presumably speculation. The documentary might be notable in its own right but that still would not make Kone notable. - Sitush (talk) 12:18, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know, he is notable enough for the administration of 72m people to erect a statue and release a documentary in his name, but because there is no research, he is not notable as per wikipedia? I would think that the article needs to exist, and the fact that there is little research should also be highlighted. Whoever he was, a lot of people consider him a hero for some reason and that in itself makes this a notable topic -- PlaneMad|YakYak 21:14, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Have you read the deletion discussion? There seem not to be references to him in multiple reliable sources. Nor, arguably, in independent sources because the documentary was tied to a Yadav socio-political campaign. As for the administration, well, plenty of administrations have erected all sorts of things with nowhere near the full support of their constituency - the Millennium Dome in London comes to mind. - Sitush (talk) 07:47, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
