- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 April 22#Category:Turkish Cypriot people
- Split. --Qwerfjkltalk 17:05, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- I have recreated Category:People from Northern Cyprus. @Nederlandse Leeuw: in hindsight, is there a real benefit in renaming the remnants of Category:Turkish Cypriot people to Category:Turkish Cypriots? The immediate sibling is Category:Greek Cypriot people. Marcocapelle (talk) 02:46, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle Yes, there is. "Fooian people" is a commonly established formula indicating a nationality of a specific state. But there is no state called "Turkish Cyprus" or "Greek Cyprus". The main article of Category:Turkish Cypriot people is Turkish Cypriots, an ethnicity, not a nationality, and thus it should be renamed per WP:C2D. Category:Greek Cypriot people has Greek Cypriots as main article and should be renamed to Category:Greek Cypriots per WP:C2D as well. NLeeuw (talk) 08:34, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- As you indicated in the CfS, ethnicity and geography do not necessarily coincide. There are Greek Cypriots living in Northern Cyprus, and Turkish Cypriots living in the Republic of Cyprus, plus lots of other ethnicities and nationalities living in both. NLeeuw (talk) 08:37, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Nederlandse Leeuw: "people" does not necessarily depend on nationality. There is also Category:Jewish people, Category:Circassian people etc. The key issue is that it is a set category for biographies. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:35, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle true, I have not been clear in my explanation. The point is that Category:Cypriot people is in the Category:People by nationality tree. Therefore, it should not have any subcategories for people by ethnicity. Therefore, I have re-parented Category:Greek Cypriot people and Category:Turkish Cypriot people to Category:Ethnic groups in Cyprus. The proposal to split off Category:People from Northern Cyprus is part of the effort to distinguish nationality, ethnicity and geography. The proposals to rename the ethnicity articles according to their main articles is just something that happens to conveniently coincide with it. NLeeuw (talk) 15:06, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Qwerfjkl: with that said, could you list the remnants of Category:Turkish Cypriot people to Category:Turkish Cypriots? Marcocapelle (talk) 18:38, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
