A start...

[edit]

Well, List of superhero debuts tells us that Starman (Jack Knight) had his debut in 1994. His "cosmic rod" or "cosmic staff" seems to be the stick in question. But then I get a bit stuck :) -- ALoan (Talk) 16:38, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

David Bowie, who sang "Starman", is a rock musician who also acts. Warofdreams talk 02:18, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"A film actor who also rocks" could be actress Karen Allen, who was in the film Starman and also teaches acting at Simon's Rock College of Bard.
I wondered yesterday if the tax collector's daughter was Madame de Pompadour - her biological father is thought to be tax farmer Charles François Paul Le Normant de Tournehem, and she married Charles-Guillaume Le Normant d'Étiolles. The village could be Étiolles in the arrondissement of Évry in the région of Île-de-France in central. This is close to the French for "star" (étoile), so he is almost a "star man", but not quite: perhaps this is the odd one out? -- ALoan (Talk) 09:24, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're not on the right track yet. Keep on looking. --Spondoolicks 10:18, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure ALoan identified the right superhero. I started going the other way, and thinking Jack Black is an actor/rocker and Jack White could be considered a rocker/actor. I've been searching for a relevant Jack Green or some other color but I fear I may be on another wild goose chase. Hoof Hearted 17:30, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure that if you guys can find the tax-collector it will all drop into place. --Spondoolicks 09:17, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! Joan of Arc's father was Jacques d'Arc, a tax collector from the village of Domrémy (now Domrémy-la-Pucelle), which, according to our article, was exempted from taxes by Charles VII in 1429, but lost its privileges after the French Revolution (the date is not given, but after 1789 presumably, so clearly after 350 years).
Adopting User:Hoof Hearted's suggestions of Jack Black as the actor/rocker and Jack White as the rocker/actor (or vice versa), do we have three "dark/black/night" Jacks:
and one "light" Jack?
Or is there another Jack/Jacques out there? -- ALoan (Talk) 18:20, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. 4 points to ALoan --Spondoolicks 09:35, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gosh, well, I guess Hoof Hearted deserves at least one of them! I'm not sure I would have got the connection without his two. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:11, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, you may be right. Okay, 3 points to ALoan, 1 point to Hoof Hearted --Spondoolicks 12:31, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
:-) merci Hoof Hearted 17:06, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Option number 2

[edit]

When I think of "carries a big stick" I think of the old proverb "Walk tall and carry a big stick." That makes me think of Walking Tall which starred The Rock, who debuted in wrestling in 1995, according to the article. the final two options include the word "Rock", so that makes me think "A tax collector who lived in a village which, thanks to his daughter, was exempt from tax for over 350 years." is the odd one out. No, sorry. --Spondoolicks 19:19, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When I think of "carry a big stick" I think of Teddy Roosevelt's "speak softly and carry a big stick" phrase. - PatricknoddyTALK (reply here)|HISTORY 13:05, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
