This class will focus on race and policing in the United States. We will consider case studies in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities. To a lesser extent, we will also look at the role of law enforcement in rural areas, on the border, and in colonial spaces like Puerto Rico, Hawai’i, and Indian Country. Of particular interest will be the relationships between policing and communities of color. This course has a seminar format, relying on student-centered discussion with minimal use of lectures by the professor. Assessment will include a broad range of formats from in-class presentation to online publication.
