History of Art 100/300 is a chronological survey of Western art and architecture, including the ancient Near East, Europe from antiquity to the present, and North America from the colonial period to the present. The course emphasizes major historical and cultural developments, analyzes key artworks and monuments, and introduces basic art-historical principles and analytical methods. The course is offered at the 100 and 300 levels, with additional reading and writing assigned at the 300 levels. Intended for non-majors.

As a supplement to the canonical story of Western Art History provided by our textbook and course lectures, students will engage in a Wiki Education project contributing to or modifying existing Wikipedia pages covering artists/artworks/art movements usually left out of the traditional narrative of Western Art History. This project is designed to develop students' skills in digital literacy, written communication, research, and critical analysis. While completing this project students will learn to identify reliable sources, evaluate texts for potential biases, and properly paraphrase to avoid plagiarism.
