picking up where 1933-1957 left off

1977-04 seems to be missing the first page. 03-1987-01.pdf is March 1988, a better version than 03-1988-01.pdf. 07-1987-02.pdf is a worse version of July 1989. 1988-06 p. 38 is missing. 1992-05 is missing many pages. 1996-02 is missing part of the table of contents.

Starting in 1990 I'm not going through the entire document, just the table of contents and selected parts. I don't know where the full text is for 2001, but it's searchable.

There seems to have been nothing of note during 2002, 2007, 2008, 2011, and 2013.

Early Interstate numbers (current numbers adopted 1957-10 02 p. 2, some history 1958-04 p. 19):

  • 401 I-95 (I-95 includes Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike: 1958-08 p. 64; RPT added to primary system as SR 85 and SR 95 1977-05 p. 34)
  • 402 I-81
  • 403 I-64 west of I-81
  • 404 I-64 east of I-81 (404 confirmed to be all the way to Hampton Roads: 1957-09 p. 5; I-64 includes HRBT and approaches: 1959-02 p. 9)
  • 405 I-66 (including US 50 at Seven Corners: 1956-05 p. 48, 1957-05 p. 16, see also 1960-08 p. 28)
  • 406 I-85? (not listed anywhere, but fits the pattern, including the order the new numbers are listed on 1957-10 02 p. 2)
  • 407 I-381
  • 408 I-581? (not I-81 - the entry on 1959-01 p. 2 is 608, but was OCRed as 408)

  • 410 I-264 or I-464?
  • 411 I-264 or I-464?
  • 412 I-295? (note that I-264 was split at Elizabeth River Tunnel in 1958-04 list, so it's possible that 412 was half of I-264 or I-464 and 414 was I-295) (I-295 extension plans 1972-09 p. 28 - or was I-95 actually moved here? 1972-10 p. 14, 1973-11 p. 13, 1974-05 p. 84, see also 1976-12 p. 23, 1977-05 p. 40, but resolved to keep I-95 on the RPT: 1979-05 p. 46)
  • 413 I-495 (extended back over I-95: 1991-08 p. 21)
  • ? I-266 (additional mileage: 1957-10 02 p. 6)

  • I-664: authorized by FHWA (1971-04 p. 36), south end at SR 164 with proposed US 17A continuing south (1973-09 p. 30, still US 17A until 1988-02 p. 19), extension approved (1978-03 p. 44), entire route approved (1992-07 p. 6), numbering possibilities (1996-05 p. 31)
  • I-395: to be submitted to AASHTO (1975-10 p. 32)
  • I-264: gap filled (1976-02 p. 39)
  • Interstates defined (1981-02 p. 17)
  • relocated Wagner Road has project number 0795 (1985-06 p. 52) - but this was probably referring to I-95 from I-295 to I-85, not Wagner Road itself

I've probably missed a few in the 1980s due to not being listed as primary extensions. I realized the problem at the beginning of 1987-07. Starting 1988-04, lists of streets are no longer included in the PDFs. Hopefully all actual changes in primary extension routings are still included.
