There still seem to be a few generic country-stub types missing - i've just noticed that we have no {{Montserrat-stub}}, for example. These are speediable, but I'm giving the heads-up here first. Unless anyone has any objections, I'll make upmerged templates for any I find that don't have a basic stub (hopefully there aren't that many left now...) Grutness...wha? 22:54, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- Not only have I made this and used this, but the number of stubs using this and the other two existing Montserrat templates would mean that Category:Montserrat stubs would contain 64 articles. Speedy? Grutness...wha? 23:53, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi all. Every country (and everything which might conceivably be called one, other than a few disputed regions) now has both a Foo-stub and a Foo-geo-stub... with four exceptions, all of which may need a little discussion before creation, as listed below. They're probably best treated in two separate loads, hence the separate headings. The entire list of such stubs for "countries and country-like entities" is now at User:Grutness/Geo-stub list, BTW. Grutness...wha? 23:01, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Korea and China
We still use {{Korea-stub}} and {{China-stub}}, which are perfectly acceptable, given that many stubs deal with pre-revolutionary/pre-war subjects. We could probably still do with the following, though:
- {{NorthKorea-stub}} / Category:North Korea stubs, as a subtype of Category:Korea stubs
- {{SouthKorea-stub}} / Category:South Korea stubs, as a subtype of Category:Korea stubs
- {{PRChina-stub}} / Category:People's Republic of China stubs, as a subtype of Category:China stubs
Grutness...wha? 23:01, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- I agree these are probably a good idea but I can see them being troublesome as well. Waacstats (talk) 00:09, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

TAAF
We have no foo-stub or geo-stub for France's Southern and Antarctic Territories. There are two issues here - firstly, the name andc secondly the scope (our stubs for other countries do not include areas within Antarctica, which is a major slice of this territory). But other French overseas départements have their own stub types; this should too. Possible options are the following:
- covers the entire area including Antarctica's Adélie Land.
- {{TAAF-stub}} / {{TAAF-geo-stub}}
- also covers the entire area, using the standard French acronym. Simpler, but may be ambiguous.
- {{FrenchSouthern-stub}} / {{FrenchSouthern-geo-stub}}
- removes Antarctica, but may be ambiguous - Corsica is in southern France, for instance.
- clearer, but a bit of a fudge - there's no permcat for French Southern Territories, it's always french Southern and Antarctic territories.
- {{Kerguelen-stub}} / {{Kerguelen-geo-stub}}
- 90% of the area of the non-Antarctic TAAF is the island of Kerguelen. Template wording could make it clear that, like Trinidad-stub, it is for the whole entity, not just the biggest island.
I'm open to any other suggestions, but given that this has been hanging around as the last outstanding geo-stub for a long time and will soon probably be the last outstanding generic stub, I'd like to get this dealt with ASAP. Grutness...wha? 23:01, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- A quick read of the article would suggest that what we want to cover is best descibed as FrenchSouthernTerritories-stub, it may be a fudge but then so would any of the others(excluding antarica/includeing islans not specifically named). Waacstats (talk) 00:14, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- I hadn't noticed before, but that article says "French Southern Territories" is an acceptable name, so I'll go for that. Grutness...wha? 20:25, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

- Support. I know it is very surprising what is missing and how generic some of them are. I would suggest we sometime do an overhaul of biography stubs on wikipedia and ensure we at least have templates organized by country (main ones in Europe and Americas anyway) by profession. There is far too much of an inconsitency. We would probably need some people from WP:BIO to help out as it would be by no means a task for only two of us The Bald One White cat 13:45, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Scientists in general seem to be largely sorted either by nationality or speciality not both so before the above gets too large I propose the following scheme. numbers are rough ideas
- {{Germany-biologist-stub}} - Category:German biologist stubs (100)
- {{Germany-botanist-stub}} - Category:German botanist stubs (100)

I don't think there is enough articles for a category yet, but it will help sort Category:Baseball stubs. For instance, all the articles on there listed with a year cannot be sorted into a baseball-season stub because they are a competition. For music recording studios. There are currently 54 tagged with {{music-venue-stub}}, which isn't the most intuitive of descriptors. I think the class is sufficiently distinct to warrant its own handy-dandy template - ideally cat too, where they could better find expert attention, but pending the magic 60 they can be upmerged to remain in Category:Music venue stubs. • Lainagier • talk • 07:03, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Categories for those that reach 60 (Probably just the Germans and Hungarians) No Canada canoe bio? I'm shocked The Bald One White cat 12:08, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- Support - though what a horrible name for the category! I'd never heard the word canoer before, and googled it to make sure it's a real word - "canoer" is outnumbered by "canoeist" by about seven to one. BTW< I'm also shocked there's no suggestion of including a {{NewZealand-canoe-bio-stub}}! Grutness...wha? 21:45, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
LOL. I know I always thought that when I was adding some Beijing "canoer" or "canoeist" bio stub. The Bald One White cat 10:22, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- I know we have a large competition in the nearest town and the locals always complain about "the damn canoeists", but the the permcat is at canoer as well so unless someone wants to take that to CFD for renaming it's probably best left as is (if anyone does take it to sfd let me know, without attempting to influence the !vote).And as for NewZealand-canoe-bio catscan gives 6. Waacstats (talk) 16:37, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
- I diid take it to CFD yesterday, once I realised the name of it! As to catscan, I'd be pretty sure that that is because of undercategorising, though I'm surprised at the number of redlinks relating to NZ rowing. There are certainly more than six on the first page of Category:New Zealand sportspeople stubs, though not by a lot (a {{NewZealand-swimming-bio-stub}}, on the other hand, looks very useful, and may be worth proposing...) These days, I am creating article stubs of highly populated villages in Karnataka state of India, missing in WP, 50-60 new articles on an average per distict. Hence it is important to split the cats and stub templates for the 29 districts of Karnataka. This is also discussed at WP:WSS/D at the moment.

- Support templates, categories for those that get to 60 (Belgaum is already viable), see where that takes us number wise. {{BangaloreUrban-geo-stub}}, {{BangaloreRural-geo-stub}}, {{DakshinaKannada-geo-stub}} and {{UttaraKannada-geo-stub}} should be used instead of those proposed above as we don't use spaces in template names, I'm also assuming none of these will be ambigous, ie none of them are names of places any where else? Waacstats (talk) 12:13, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- Support templates, and any categories which have 60+ stubs - but with amended names as Waacstats suggests. Two of the names would, however be ambiguous - Hassan and Bijapur. Hassan is the name of other places, though this seems to be the only one in India, so HassanIN should be used. Bijapur is more tricky, since there's a Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh. BijapurKarnataka may be the best solution here. I'd also suggest that if by-district categories are created, the word "district" be included in each, since a lot of these have cities as their main articles.I'd suggest the following amended list of categories and templates:

Divisions are rarely used and not all states have divisions ( like the the Kerala state discussed above).Therefore splitting per distict is consistent and effective -- Tinu Cherian - 05:01, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
- If memory serves correctly then I think the divisions where only used because none of the districts whee viable or all the viable districts had already been split. I assume this is akin to what happens when we end up splitting US States by region because none of the counties are viable. Waacstats (talk)

Since {{SouthAfrica-media-stub}} has been deleted, a number of books need to be stub sorted. However, we have yet to sort books by country of origin and I don't know how wise this is. What should we do?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 23:01, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- I would rather not go down that road...They should be categorized by country of origin but stubbed by genre. We do have Japan-lit-stub and India-lit-stub, but those are really for the culture's literature as a whole. I'll go look round the book stubs and see what I can do. Her Pegship (tis herself) 01:18, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'm also wary of it - it would be easy for people to confuse SouthAfrica-book-stub as being for books about SA, in which case we're likely to end up with a mess in the category. Grutness...wha? 04:23, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

- How does that sort the them into Category:South African media stubs?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 22:58, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry for being vague. It doesn't sort them into South African media stubs; they've been re-sorted into the appropriate book stub sub-cats. They've also been perm-categorized under Category:South African books. Since there were only a few, and stub-sorting by country isn't currently desirable, I thought this was the best solution. The result of the debate was create United Kingdom category only.
There are currently 630 articles in this category, being fed in by 7 stub templates (France, UK, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine, general Europe). I propose giving each country template its own category (Category:French figure skating biography stubs, Category:British figure skating biography stubs, Category:Austrian figure skating biography stubs, Category:German figure skating biography stubs, Category:Swiss figure skating biography stubs, Category:Ukrainian figure skating biography stubs). This wouldn't require any new stub types. Kolindigo (talk) 20:20, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose all but one. It is standard practice to have multiple country-level templates feeding one category where the number of stubs used by each template is below threshold. In this case, only one of the thresholds has reached the 60-stub threshold level (though a couple of others are close) - for that reason I'd support Category:United Kingdom figure skating biography stubs (which is the standard name for UK-related categories. BTW, though not a "full" stub type, a category is still regarded as a partial stub type, especially when a template has previously been made in an upmerged form. Grutness...wha? 21:33, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

There are currently no stubs related to organizational communication and various facets related to organizational communication. I'm wanting to change this.—Preceding unsigned comment added by JasonSWrench (talk • contribs)
- Not sure I quite understand - if there are no stubs for it, why would you need a template or category? There is also no permanent category relating to Category:Organizational communication. There is an Category:Organizational theory, but it's not really big enough for its own stub type - and it's a pretty vague area that overlaps with several existing stub types. Perhaps something like a {{Humanresources-stub}} might be a more effective stub type? Grutness...wha? 10:27, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

(Actually they seem to be implying that Category:Diving stubs is about Category:Underwater diving but Category:Diving biography stubs is about Category:Diving (acrobatics) – which is just plain confusing.)
I propose splitting into more precisely-named categories, presumably Category:Underwater diving stubs and Category:Diving (acrobatics) stubs. —Paul A (talk) 03:01, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- Makes sense, though that would also require adding two more templates, so we'll have to work out the naming for those, too. Grutness...wha? 05:42, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- A great idea and should mean I can finally get those pesky underwater divers out of the sport heirachy! (just kidding). As for template names how about diving-sport- and diving-underwater-? Waacstats (talk) 08:59, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- perhaps the reverse might make more sense: sport-diving-stub (or acrobatics-diving-stub?) and underwater-diving-stub. In the case of the sport one, it's a bit more ambiguous, since it could be seen a split of sport-stub, but I think since the purpose is to split diving-stub it would be logical(and even approach grammar!) to have them the other way round. LGBT split

The result of the debate was create -org-, -law-, -film-, and -novel-; do not (re)create -bio- or -book-.
There are now over 800 articles in Category:LGBT stubs. I'd like to propose the following templates, splitting out separate categories for any which reach threshold:
- {{LGBT-org-stub}} (organisations)
- {{LGBT-law-stub}} (legislation)
- {{LGBT-book-stub}} or {{LGBT-novel-stub}} (there seem to be a large number of novels in the category)
- {{LGBT-film-stub}} (ditto films)
Given the number of articles on civil unions and civil rights by country, the law one should easily reach 60, as should the one for organisations. The others may not, though there are a considerable number of books in the main category. I've mentioned this proposal at WP:LGBT, BTW (or, FWIW, will ASAP, OK? :) Grutness...wha? 22:13, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- Those sound like reasonable sub-cats. I think there should also be a {{LGBT-bio-stub}} for stub biographies of LGBT people. (I had created such a category, but because of opposition thereto, it was never populated. Can we do so?) Aleta Sing 22:49, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- I oppose a LGBT-bio-stub on the basis that it is far too general. The activist-stub is for people notable directly because of their LGBT status. If we have a LGBT-bio-stub, every LGBT person could be stubbed such, making it a huge mess.--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 22:55, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
- And I would second a {{LGBT-novel-stub}} rather than {{LGBT-book-stub}}, as I don't there are enough non-fiction books on sexuality in general for a separate stub type, let alone on lgbt issues. Her Pegship (tis herself) 01:20, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- {{LGBT-novel-stub}} does make more sense than trying to put fiction and non-fiction works together, and they do seem to be mainly novels. I agree with Thomas, BTW - a simple bio-stub is likely to be too much of a catch-all to really be that useful. Grutness...wha? 01:23, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- Support proposal, with no preference between "book" and "novel". I agree that a bio stub has enough potential problems that it should not be included in this split. --Alynna (talk) 20:45, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Category:Trail stubs isn't in need of splitting yet, but that's mainly because of massive undersorting. I'd like to propose that a few sub-templates may be useful. The following three in particular would get pretty high use, and the US one would have enough for its own category:
- {{US-trail-stub}} / Category:United States trail stubs
- {{UK-trail-stub}}
- {{Canada-trail-stub}}
- {{Europe-trail-stub}}
Suggestions for others would also be welcome. Grutness...wha? 01:36, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Seems to be a great deal of stubs created on British officers/politicians who lived under the British Raj. At present the creator is placing them in "people stubs". As India politician stub or British politician stub might not be so specific would anybody approve of an idea for a template for governors or British people who spent much of their life in British India? The Bald One White cat 17:09, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Hello. The Skating stubs category currently contains two sub categories: figure skating stubs, and skating biography stubs. I think this category should contain only sub categories. The skating page is a disambiguation page for a good reason: because "skating" is a word with many meanings. A skating stub is therefore not very exact. There needs to be a speed skating basic stub like there is for figure skating (figure-skating-stub). Right now, there is a speed-skating-bio-stub and a figure-skating-bio-stub, and there are two pages in skating-bio-stub that deal with in-line skaters, who should have their own stub family, even if it's just part of inline-skating-stub since there aren't that many inline skating bios right now. Ideally, I do not think there should be anything in skating-stub category at all. It is simply too broad that it becomes confusion. We should not be categorizing inline skaters with speed skaters or figure skaters. They are completely different things, and the only thing they have in common is the word "skater". 70.20.74.178 (talk) 19:00, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- The idea of a {{speed-skating-stub}} is a good one, though it wouldn't entirely solve anything, not immediately at least. The problem with the category is that at the moment there are probably far too few speed skating stubs for a separate category (60 is the threshold, as explained above), so the template would need to be upmerged into Category:Skating stubs until it grew larger. The idea of using Category:Skating stubs in this way, eventually ending up with a parent-only stub category (that is, with no matching {{Skating-stub}}) would be reasonable, though, especially given that there is a parent Category:Skating. But we'd by then probably have a similar problem with inline skating. Even if we managed to clear them, though, it is clear from Category:Skating stubs that there are some articles which couldn't be split between the different forms of skating - that's why there are still unsubcategorised articles in that category. For that reason I'm not 100% keen on it.
- As far as the bio-stubs are concerned, though, yes, the creation of an {{inline-skating-bio-stub}} would be useful, as would the creation of a {{US-speed-skating-bio-stub}}, to match the current one for figure skaters. There's no equivalent permanent category to Category:Skating biography stubs, so splitting it as far as is practical, and possibly getting rid of the plain {{Skating-bio-stub}} (and its US equivalent) would be a good move. Coming close to 800. Believe it or not we have over 60 articles on diplomatic missions in Russia. catscan
Do we want to create a template/category for this if so what do we call it and what if any other stub parents do we give it? Waacstats (talk) 14:09, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- I'd be open to a {{Russia-embassy-stub}} covering "embassies and other diplomatic missions", probably with Category:Russia(n) diplomatic mission stubs as its target, although I can see a case being made for different names so as to extend it somehow to include all the "Foo-Russian relations" stubs, too. The Category:Russia stubs base cat probably could do with some sorting, BTW, so that 800 is probably artificially high - there seem to be a fair few geo and bio types in there. Grutness...wha? 23:52, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with you on the undersorting but thought I'd ask about this as alot of articles are obviously embassies. The problem with the names suggested is that I would take that as meaning embassies of Russia i.e Russian embassy in the US rather than foreign embassies in Russia ie US embassy in Russia. The perm cat would be Category:Diplomatic missions in Russia. Waacstats (talk) 12:10, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- On a larger note, I'd like to see a stub created for ALL bilateral relations stubs. This type of article has grown immensely over the past 6 months and think grouping them with a specific stub rather than {{politics-stub}} would be quite useful. Perhaps sort by country?--Thomas.macmillan (talk) 23:29, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
- One possible solution would be to ignore whether it's an embassy of a country or an embassy in a country and to make both Category:Diplomatic missions in Russia and Category:Diplomatic missions of Russia joint parents. It's a bit of a fudge and would mean constantly double-stubbing, but it would mean that the numbers would be better for a lot of countries. It would also make sense that Fooian embassy in Bar would have both a foo-stub and a bar-stub template. Some possible naming options would be -embassy-, -diplomacy-, -diplomaticmission-, and foreignrelations-. I suspect the third and fourth are too wordy, and it would largely depend on the intended scope between the first two. Grutness...wha? 00:12, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
