The result of the debate was create upmerged Czechoslovakia-stub, proceed with caution.
Former country stub. CatScan found 67 articles.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:49, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- When youtake out the less than 4 links it goes down to 50, also see comment below. Waacstats (talk) 20:19, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
I actually think this would be a very much needed template. I would support it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:26, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- I support it as well but as I say below, we need to be careful of what is included. It might need to be upmerged to Category:Europe stubs until we get to 60, I also think that anything that relates to only one of the currently independent states , should be tagged with that state almost regardless of the period it relates. (eg a mayor of Prague should get a CzechRepublic-politician-stub even if he served when it was the capital of Czechoslovakia). Waacstats (talk) 12:13, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- Support - also, any chance of DDR stubs? --MacRusgail (talk) 16:39, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

The result of the debate was create as AustriaHungary-stub.
Former country stub. CatScan found 156 articles.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:49, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- I have nothing against former nation stubs. However having looked at the first 10 articles I think 6/7 of them are probably not related to the Empire. If 60 articles can be found, then I think a note on the category to the effect that only articles related to the Empire. Waacstats (talk) 20:36, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Indeed, the category system fails somewhat here, but still I can see quite a few articles that could use this category. After, AH was a modern European country with over a century of history - I am sure there will be more then 50 stubs for years to come. Here are some subcategories that total about 40 stubs: [1], [2], [3]. Further, I can point out one error with current stub categories: Category:Austro-Hungarian people is underutilized; I can think of many bios of Polish people from AH partition that were never categorized in it as I (having written dozens of such bios) didn't realize it existed. I could've used such an AH stub on many an article. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 02:02, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm a little uneasy about starting stub types for "defunct countries", as it were, but if we do, this should comply with the naming conventions for stubs and be at {{AustriaHungary-stub}} - or even at {{AustroHungarianEmpire-stub}}, since that seems to be more pertinent to what the stub would actually be for. Grutness...wha? 22:05, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- As the name of the nation is Austria–Hungary, I think it AustriaHungary-stub would be more correct.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 02:02, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

At present we only have {{Economist-stub}} and American. 550 stubs, should create templates for most of the European countries and Russia and some Asian countries like India etc. It is likely several will be viable for new categories. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:54, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

- {{Italy-economist-stub}}

- {{Russia-economist-stub}}
- {{CzechRepublic-economist-stub}}
- {{Spain-economist-stub}}
- {{Portugal-economist-stub}}
- {{Netherlands-economist-stub}}

The result of the debate was create Tees Valley school stubs.
Different stubs must be created for Redcar & Cleveland schools, Stockton and Middlesbrough schools.
Technically, these schools aren't in Yorkshire and Humber but confusingly are in Yorkshire.
Perhaps categories should also be made for North Yorkshire schools etc. Computerjoe's talk 16:01, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Support templates, probably upmerged to Category:North East England school stubs. Waacstats (talk) 20:38, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- Is there any reason why the schools categories use a different county scheme to all the other stub types split by county (e.g., -struct-, -geo-)? Grutness...wha? 22:07, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know. But, at any rate, if the schools were to be tagged as Yorkshire, they would stil be in Yorkshire and Humber categories higher up, when some are in the North East. Computerjoe's talk 06:52, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- We didn't have enough from any single county when the category was pushing 800 to make a county-school cat viable, so we upmerged to regions, it may be time to look to see if the county cats are viable. Waacstats (talk) 07:39, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- It would make sense. If we did so, we would have to get rid of region-based categories, as North Yorkshire doesn't correspond to the Yorkshire and Humber region. Computerjoe's talk 15:48, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could have Tees Valley school stubs, comprising Hartlepool, Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Stockton? Computerjoe's talk 08:48, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

That was thirty. A few more while I am on it, but I am running out of time:
--189.121.183.72 (talk) 22:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Not an outright yes or no, but some general comments:
- 1) We don't normally have stub types for disputed regions, since edit-warring is always a possibility (and that can have far more far-reaching consequences on templates and categories than it can on articles. Having said that, N-K is a relatively stable region in itself compared to some others that have been turned down.
- 2) 30 would be enough for a separate template (or more, see below), but not for a separate stub category.
- 3) By stub naming conventions, this should be {{NagornoKarabakh-stub}}, with no hyphen before the K.
- 4) We generally try to split items ASAP into general and geography stubs (with bio-stubs soon after). As such, if this were to be accepted, I'd propose not only {{NagornoKarabakh-stub}}, but also {{NagornoKarabakh-geo-stub}} and possibly {{NagornoKarabakh-bio-stub}}.
- Grutness...wha? 22:36, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, I'm not sure what you mean by stubs for disputed regions. Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transnistria all have their own stubs, but I'll go on finding more stubs. As for the technicalities of actually creating the stub, I'm not sure I can make it (I am an IP user).--189.121.183.72 (talk) 19:41, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- ...and if you look in the archives of WP:SFD you will find that they've all been the subject of ongoing disputes (the stub types, that is, not the regions). You'll also discover that several other similar types, e.g., for Turkish Northern Cyprus, have been deleted in the past for exactly these reasons. Grutness...wha? 00:46, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

- Best thing to do is probably see whether any other WP:WSS regular has anything to say about the matter. I'm not as active here as I used to be, and things may well have changed enough that stub-sorters are more lenient on this sort of type now. As for links, there are many - South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Chechnya, North Cyprus here and here... The most complicated series of problems was probably that with the Kosovo stub types (some of the links can be found here). Grutness...wha? 21:56, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

- Strong oppose. Not only is there a confound between stub categories and Stub-Class categories (which are completely different things), but this cuts across the concept of splitting government-related stubs by nation, which has been done for a considerfable length of time and has a very large number of precedents. This stub type shoulden't exist for that second reason, and the category definitely shouldn't exist as a receptacle for stubs. Oh, and what's with proposing a stub type which appears to have already been made? Grutness...wha? 09:24, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Stub tempaltes feed into stub cats, stub-class cats are fed by wikiproject talkpage templates which are we being asked for here? Stub-class cat would only need to be agreed by the specific wikiproject. As for the stub template I have to agree with grutness splitting by nation is probably best. - Support speedy. One other thing waacstats, I noticed you are sorting into X-sport-bio-stub for boxers. However, I'd propose that we create X-boxing-bio-stubs for any country with a boxing bio stub. It makes counting easier and it cuts down on the number of stubs on a page, which I think is always a good thing.--TM 14:22, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
- Didn't think about that and the same would apply to any other sports where we have already split by continent. I'll add them to my todo list. For now I'll just work on sport-bios as it makes it easier to see if we have enough for a category. Waacstats (talk) 14:55, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

I propose the creation of both a Synapsid stub type {{synapsid-stub}} and one for prehistoric arthropods, {{paleo-arthropod-stub}}. Both would have more than enough to qualify for creation, but I'm not going to count them because their parent category (paleontology stubs) has over 800 articles in it. To go under Category:NorthernIreland-stub.
There is currently no section for general Northern Ireland sporting organisations or more specifically for aeromodelling in the Northern Ireland section, so I propose an aeromodelling stub Sean Scully 12.55 5th March 2009 (GMT)
- No, We don't have a gemeral aeromodelling stub and I don't think that there are enough articles for that let alone a NI eromodelling stub. Waacstats (talk) 19:22, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
- If you do a simple seach under model flying you will see that there are infact 3178 articles listed. I doubt that this constitutes "not enough articles" in the overall topic. The NI Aeromodelling page is as valid a stub as these articles and offers the user/reader who may be particularily interested in aeromodelling, aeromodelling in Northern Ireland, or simply the different sports available in the region, the information they require. If the topic is not currently covered then this shows a gap in the encyclopedias coverage of the topic. This surely is the exact purpose of a stub or short article. Sean Scully 7th March 2009 18:13 GMT
- There might be 3178 articles about model flying - and an overall aeromodelling-stub may be a reasonable thing to propose sometime if it seems useful. But let's do a quick guesstimate: 30% of articles are stubs - that cuts 3178 articles down to about 1000 stubs. Maybe 10% of them (likely an overestimate) will be about British aeromodelling in general - 100 stubs. Perhaps 15% of them (almost certainly an overestimate) will be about Northern Ireland aeromodelling - 15 stubs. Even if every single one of them related specifically to the Northern Ireland Association of Aeromodellers (highly unlikely) that would still be only a quarter of the number of stubs needed for a stub category. What's more, not only is there no equivalent permanent category for the NIAA, there isn't even an *article* on it - there was one but it was speedied as A7 and advertising. Overall, I'm also strongly opposed to this proposed stub type (BTW, it would be worthwhile you looking at the stub naming conventions - the proposed name is not a good one) Grutness...wha? 20:20, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
- As you say there is no article on the NIAA, and there is no article on aeromodelling in Northern Ireland therefore this in itself proves that a gap exists. If we only create articles which are already covered by a multitude of stubs / articles then the likelyhood of covering all topics of interest is nil. Wikipedia is an encycolpedia, it covers a wide range of topics for all its user not just ones of particular interest or interest to you. You have not given any firm reason why you do not want this stub other than you do not feel there is enough interest (A personal opinion). Your mathematics are guess work at its best! The following are diciplines flown in aermodelling with the search results for them
control flying: 11,983 indoor flying: 547 model helicopter flying: 921 rc model flying: 178 model jets 5578 model gliders: 729
Total: 19,936
Now if we apply your mathematics to this it means that with these searches alone we have
30% of 19936 = 6645 stubs, 10% of 6645 = 664 about British Aeromodelling, 15% of 664 = 99.6 stubs that have content relating to or can be linked to a stubb on Northern Ireland Aeromodelling.
If you do a search for model associations you get a return of 19,268 I take it that all of these are also opposed?
Under model flying associations there are 1412, again all of these other associations are now contested? Or is it just Northern Irelands model flying association? Regarding Naming convention the following are listed
Model Aeronautics Association of Canada; British Model Flying Association; Far East Model Car Association; Fourth Association of Model Auto Racing; American Speed Association;
What is the difference in these names and my proposal? That they are Canada, British American? These have all been accepted in the past and are not contested. Is it only large countries who should be listed in Wikipedia? Sean Scully 7th March 2009 23:55 GMT
Surely the very nature of Wikipedia is to allow access to ALL. Northern Ireland throughout a large part of the world is totally unknown apart from the new they see on TV. Aeromodelling is a large organisation in NI and should be allowed its place. bill scott Belfast N.I.
Aeromodelling encourages many educational, social and recreational benefits. Any one who wishes to get involved may use Wikipedia to garner information, particularly if they are interested in model flying in N. Ireland. Small countries should not be discriminated against in this way. Robert McCartney Londonderry N.I.
- I don't think anyone has any problem with articles, of any length , on aeromodelling in NI or the NIAA but this page is to propose stub templates and categories. Waacstats (talk) 18:50, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia provides knowledge and a source of information for many people around the world, thats what the world web is all about. When we start saying NO! to various interest groups from small regions like Northern Ireland, such as the NIAA, the official voice of Areomodelling in the region, then I believe its defeats the overall purpose of the world web. John Pearson Armagh N.I.
- This is all completely irrelevant to whether a stub type should exist. Most of the comments above seem to be thoroughly confused as to what a stub type is and what it is used for. Stub types are used only for the purposes of sorting large numbers of tiny items into categories to make it easier for editors to work on them. Not having a stub type in no way indicates that articles should not exist - you are perfectly entitled to have articles and permanent categories on any subject that is noteworthy enough. But as stated on WP:STUB, stub types are only created when there are sufficient stubs for them. That is, the stub articles come first and stub templates and categories are only made when there are plenty of them. Currently, there is no article on the NIAA, so there is absolutely no need whatsoever for a stub type for it. If the article existed, and if sufficient stubs existed on the NIAA, then it might be considered appropriate. At the moment it is not. This is not a case of "saying NO! to various interest groups from small regions like Northern Ireland" - it is a case of saying no to any group of no matter what size that does not meet the criteria. If there were only 10 stubs on a potentially enormous subject like, say, football, or American politics, or art, or French history, then they would similarly not have stub types. If you want a stub type on the NIAA, first you should have enough stubs for it to be worthwhile for the purposes of stub sorting. Grutness...wha? 22:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
- I can see your point however the stub types created for Northern Ireland are
Northern Ireland geography stubs; Northern Ireland politician stubs; Northern Ireland railway station stubs; Northern Ireland school stubs; Northern Ireland stubs; Northern Irish football biography stubs; Northern Irish football club stubs; Northern Irish people stubs; Northern Irish sportspeople stubs;
Aeromodelling does not fit any of these categories neatly.
We will however take your advice and simply create stubs in the Northern Ireland stubs, then when ample stubs relating to NIAA aeromodelling are created we will again request that a stub type for this be created separately. As such I withdraw at this point in time the request for a a new NIAA stub type.Sean Scully 8th March 2009 23:20 GMT

It is such a huge subject that i am surprised no stub exists for it. You see, {{mythology-stub}} and {{culture-stub}} don't quite hit the mark, and a {{traditions-stub}} also does not exist...so i guess i'm proposing both, then! (the latter to go under Category:Traditions) I ran into the need for the folklore stub when re-creating the Baba Marta article, and the traditions stub when expanding Pizho and Penda, but there are many articles that would benefit from them both. Thank You! BigSteve (talk) 23:33, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, folks, I've created the tradition stub: {{tradition-stub}} I chose the piñata as the picture as it is a very well-known tradition, and vividly colourful for the tiny thumbnail image. please visit the wiki commons page for the picture as well as the stub page to check if i have done everything correctly (this is my first stub template so am still learning), especially if i have mentioned the correct licence and added all the relevant categories. (I have not yet created the folklore stub as i cannot think of what picture to use...) Thank you in advance! BigSteve (talk) 13:34, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
ps. I've added the new stub here - correct or not? i am unsure about the parent category being Category:Traditions while the stub is "tradition" (singular) - and then should the stub category be Category:Tradition stubs or Category:Traditions stubs??? or both, with a redirect in between them? BigSteve (talk) 14:18, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
- Not quite right, but fixed now (which is why creating these things is normally left to regular WP:WSS members!) The permcat should be - and is - at Category:Traditions (and shouldn't be linked from the template); the stub cat should be at Category:Tradition stubs - and certainly shouldn't have been a redlink. I created this before realising I shoudl have done it here.
