Overview

[edit]

This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 30 September 2024 to 29 September 2025. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator (or lead coordinators), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

Responsibilities

[edit]
From Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators:

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

Practical information on coordinating may be found here and here.

The current coordinators are:

Name Position Standing for re-election?
Hawkeye7 Lead coordinator Yes
Donner60 Coordinator Yes
Gog the Mild Coordinator Yes
Harrias Coordinator
Iazyges Coordinator Yes
Pickersgill-Cunliffe Coordinator Yes
Schierbecker Coordinator Yes

Donner60

[edit]

Donner60 (talk · contribs)

I have been contributing to Wikipedia for all but a few months in every month for more than 14 years. I have been a coordinator for the past year. I make the same Shermaneque statement as Gog the Mild as to the lead coordinator position and the same reservation as Hog Farm as to periods of time during which I will have less available time to spend online due to real life. I hope most of these periods will be rather brief and intermittent. Some will come up in the next few months.

Comments and questions for Donner60

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I have written 131 articles over the years, 99 of which have been about military history or biography. My main area of concentration has been the American Civil War but I have written articles and made improvements to other military history articles. I have helped save a few GA assessments and commented on some others. I hope to do a little more writing and editing this year as well as reviewing. I have worked on improving many articles. Many are listed on my user page. I have made many assessments for and a few other contributions to the project this year as a coordinator.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have one year's experience as a coordinator. I have assessed mostly articles about which requests for B class assessments have been made and have reviewed many B class bot assessments for accuracy. I have not contributed many higher level assessments because my review of many requests at the B level would not allow me to be an uninvolved or independent reviewer or assessor for those articles at other levels.
    • I have promoted some articles to A class since an uninvolved coordinator must perform this task. I have reviewed most contest entries for the past year and closed the contest each month. I had done some assessments and review of contest entries in earlier months last year before becoming a coordinator.
    • Over many years I have acquired a large library (of mainly used books – no ad here as to sellers). This allows me to check or contribute many facts or references to articles, to do some fact checking, to suggest improvements to articles and to answer some questions. Although my American Civil War library is my largest collection, I have books on other military topics, many on the American Revolutionary War, the World Wars and the Korean War and a few on many other military history subjects.

Gog the Mild

[edit]

Gog the Mild (talk · contribs)

I have been active on Wikipedia for some time, during which MilHist has become my Wiki-home and I have much appreciated the creative space made available for me. Working as a coordinator over the past five years has seemed a useful way of partially paying back for the use of the "playground" and perhaps helping to maintain it as the collegiate place that it is. Note that I take a Shermanesque attitude to the possibility of being elected lead coordinator.

Comments and questions for Gog the Mild

[edit]
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Some enthusiasm and some time. As a natural Wikignome I actually enjoy some of the more repetitive or routine activities, so I may be able to free some of the more experienced coordinators' time up for some of the more high-skill activities. I also review MilHist nominations for promotion to Featured Article or, less frequently, A Class status.

Hawkeye7

[edit]

Hawkeye7 (talk · contribs)

I have been your Lead Coordinator for the past year. I am currently standing for re-election. Last month I was at Wikimania 2024 in Katowice, Poland, and am still in Europe at the Paralympic Games in Paris, France. (Including a visit to Omaha Beach.) But I will be back in a couple of weeks time.

Comments and questions for Hawkeye7

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I have written over one hundred Featured Articles. The main project I worked on for some years was improving the articles on the Manhattan Project to Good article status or better. The history of the Manhattan Project was turned into a Featured Topic. As a result of the recent Oppenheimer film, the article on J. Robert Oppenheimer, has run up over twenty million page views this year. In more recent times I have enjoyed writing articles on military logistics and nuclear-powered rockets.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have a PhD in military history. I have access to academic libraries and online journal resources, and have experience with military history research related to World War I and II. I write and maintain Bots, in Perl and C#. The role of the coordinator used to be quite complex so I wrote the MilHistBot, initially to handle the work involved in promoting articles to A-class. This made the task of promoting A-class articles much easier. Since then I have set the MilHistBot to work cleaning up our project backlogs. Several of the project backlogs are now no more. (One was cleared last month with the help of a template change excluding draft space articles from tagging. We are approaching our goals with regard to the overall quality of articles. In recent times, in my role as lead coordinator, I have been involved with the move of our WikiProject banner to use the {{WPBannerMeta}} meta-template.
  • Thanks for standing, Hawkeye7. Are you the chap who has five (or thereabouts) Master's degrees, and if not, who was it? Hope Yurrop is treating you fine!
Only two; I think the chap with five is this guy. It has been pretty intense and exhausting but I will be back home soon. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 17:36, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No it was a Milhist coord rather than a fictional character; it was interesting for what it revealed, I suppose. Obviously, someone with that many MAs has plenty of ideas and enthusiasm but must lack discipline and independent clarity of mind. Glad you got home safely! Matarisvan

[edit]

Matarisvan (talk · contribs)

This is my second year editing on Wikipedia, and I would like to be a part of the WPMH project particularly because I like the quality & attention to detail of articles and reviews here. If elected, I want to add more book reviews to the Bugle newsletter, particularly from non-Western regions, if Ian and Nick would be ok with this. I also am interested in improving the ACR process, which currently has very long timelines and fewer editors reviewing nominations.

Comments and questions for Matarisvan

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I would say my interest in reviewing articles, whether at FAC, GAC, ACR or PR. I try to add my reviews to all nominations of the aforementioned types, so that's mostly guaranteed text, source and image reviews from my end if no one else has done these. I also enjoy working on the 5 goals set by the project and on any ongoing special projects like Majestic Titan right now. I can do routine, boring work; for example, I've updated the WPMH FA, GA and FP list to reflect recent promotions and delists not noticed by the bot, and also added MILHIST GAs and FAs which did not have the project tags to WPMH.

Throwing my hat into the ring for a third year! Since the last election I have been granted a mop...this doesn't mean I am less active but I do have a wider set of responsibilities. I look forward to continuing my involvement with the WikiProject.

Comments and questions for Pickersgill-Cunliffe

[edit]
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • My main area of interest is the Napoleonic Wars. I initially focused on naval warfare but have since broadened my horizons. I have most recently delved into the First World War and took Henry Macandrew to FAC. Amongst my (far too optimistic) list of projects, I am working on a Roebuck-class ship good topic.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • With two years under my belt I would tentatively call myself an experienced coordinator. I work mostly in the reviewing realm, focusing on GAN but also helping out at ACR and FAC. I am also involved in rejuvenating the member affairs process, currently focusing on welcoming new members and occasionally having a say in The Bugle.
