Suspected sockpuppets [edit]

Evidence submitted by Gyrofrog [edit]
  • I suspect that the above-named accounts are the same user originally known as Johnyajohn, later surfacing as Octavian history (talk · contribs) who was indef blocked in Jan. 2008. The above-named acounts have made recent edits to Marilyn Monroe and Talk:Marilyn Monroe, and/or Death of Marilyn Monroe and Talk:Death of Marilyn Monroe. Edits by the first two accounts roughly coincide with recent news coverage of the sale of a Marilyn Monroe-related item. This closely resembles past patterns (compare with past claims about "hundreds of books/millions of people:" [1], [2],[3],[4]): In May 2008, suspected sock puppets edited the article following the ostensible sale of a Monroe sex tape. In July 2008, they showed up again, this time ostensibly critical of the sex tape, though I strongly suspect it was damage control and an attempt to remove it from Wikipedia. Chriskardashian showed up more recently, again seemingly critical of the sex tape transaction and arguing for the removal of the content, just before the latest (and actually viewable) film was announced.
  • See also Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Johnyajohn, this has gone on for a while with regards to Marilyn Monroe-related articles (I was unsure how to else to incorporate this in the new request. I know the old system used to embed the old cases at the end.)
  • Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/Octavian history and User talk:Johnyajohn#June 2007 provide some additional background. The latter link, I believe, may bring the whole thing into better focus.
  • I did not request Checkuser (at least not at this time). I believe the evidence is sufficient, based on past cases, and I suspect that by now the perpetrator(s) may have accounted for CU (see Octavian history's comments, [5], [6]). Also the Oct. and Nov. accounts may be stale for CU. That said, I certainly wouldn't object if anyone decides a CU is warranted.

Update 2009-12-06: Going back further to 2007 to make another comparison, the most recent edit of Gazoli9 is similar to those made by old account Bobtoo (talk · contribs) (who was eventually blocked for legal threats). Bobtoo's edits ([7], [8]) assert similarly high importance of news reports when the same collector individual was in the news, and again concerning Marilyn Monroe. (And here's the by-now-familiar "hundreds/millions" claim again.) -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:44, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets [edit]

Evidence submitted by Gyrofrog [edit]

Long-term sockpuppetry from Johnyajohn/Octavian history; as usual, it involves the Talk:Marilyn Monroe page (see archived SPI listing from Dec. 4).

  • User:GeneKellyusa483 removed ([9]; second edit by this account) a comment that was critical of a certain memorabilia dealer, as previous sockpuppets have done ([10], [11]). As usual, this activity, along with the the talk page criticism, follow recent media coverage of said memorabilia dealer.
  • User:Jil492868 was created same day as GeneKellyusa483, and also left comments at Talk:Marilyn Monroe (account's only edits as of this writing).

See User talk:Johnyajohn#June_2007 for more background.

Again, GeneKellyusa483's removal of critical commentary from Talk:Marilyn Monroe ([12]) is similar to behavior of earlier accounts: Second and third edits by Joe1p1p (talk · contribs) were to archive ([13],[14]) part of the Talk:Marilyn Monroe page, which contained comments criticizing then-current events involving the memorabilia collector. Star-in-law (talk · contribs) had done the same ([15],[16]), as had Chalitino (talk · contribs) ([17],[18]), though I hadn't noticed this last account or its two edits until this writing.

I am thinking that the accounts in the previous (Dec. 4) SPI listing are recent enough for comparison.

User:Octavian history (the most active of the Johnyajohn accounts) was subject to, and blocked as a result of, previous checkuser requests; see Requests for checkuser/Case/Johnyajohn. Another sockpuppet appealed Octavian history's block to the Arbcom, see Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/Octavian history; Arbcom elected to leave the block in place.

More activity at Talk:Marilyn Monroe, see previous cases. Following a now-familiar pattern, Fine-estate7 is challenging/removing talk page criticism of a certain memorabilia collector/vendor ([19], [20]). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:53, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Again, removal of critical comments from Talk:Marilyn Monroe is similar to recent activity by blocked sockpuppet GeneKellyusa483 (talk · contribs) ([21]; see December 29 sockpuppet investigation). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:53, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets [edit]

Evidence submitted by Gyrofrog [edit]
  • Jackio42367 (talk · contribs) is removing attributed information ([22], [23]) from the Mark Bellinghaus (edit talk links history) article, claiming that the links are dead and do not support the citations. Other editors have challenged this and restored the information ([24]). Johnyajohn and associated accounts have all made edits related to a certain Marilyn Monroe memorabilia collector/dealer. Mark Bellinghaus is in the same trade, and from what I gather, the two are competitors to put it mildly: [25] (I gather that the relationship between these two may have led, in part, to the first infobox at User:Delicious carbuncle).
  • Also note the similarity to another Johnyajohn sockpuppet's account name, Jackio573h (talk · contribs).
  • I believe other accounts associated with Johnyajohn have made edits to the Mark Bellinghaus article (and its talk page), but I assume they are too stale for checkuser:
  • But note that Olol483 also edited Hajj Nematollah ([26]), another overlap with both Johnyajohn ([27]) and sock account Octavian history ([28]).
