Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

Relevant articles: Arun Budhathoki, an autobiography by Dansong22; Kathmandu Tribune; Nepal Tribune Media; The Applicant; Nepal national cricket team. Dansong22 created their autobiography article (see Talk:Arun Budhathoki) in 2013 (see their userpage which is signed 'ArunBudhathoki') and the account is dormant since then. A new account Owlf became active June 2014 and started editing the Arun Budhathoki article more than any other. They also showed a keen interest in Nepal national cricket team that Dansong22 used to edit. A new account Ozar77's first recorded edit was in 2016.He also showed interest in Nepal national cricket team in addition to Arun Budhathoki and related articles. Ozar77 created two new articles connected to Arun Budhathoki, Kathmandu Tribune and Nepal Tribune Media. They have been almost exclusively dedicated to these three articles since then. Dansong22's blantant undisclosed COI and Ozar77's continued aggressive behaviour relating to these articles is unmistakable. Ozar77 has been deleting AfD tags in these articles, blanking discussions and threatening editors. IP 156.34.64.131 was used to exclusively add promotional and/or OR content to the Arun Budhathoki article. Multiple IPs starting 156.34.xxx.xxx made edits on Arun Budhathoki page starting right after Dansong22 became dormant. Various IPs starting 27.34.xxx.xxx contribute to these three articles regularly, including IP 27.34.68.198 which only edited Arun Budhathoki on wikipedia. IP 27.34.20.3 only edited Nepal Tribune Media. Safe to say none of these contributors came to add critical material about said wikipedia articles. (Hope this is enough specificity.) Usedtobecool TALK 07:43, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Update: IP 27.34.68.251 is dedicated to contesting deletions of those same pages. Usedtobecool TALK 14:41, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Update 2: Diff : Ozar77 makes an update on Kathmandu Tribune page at 20:06. At 20:31, 27.34.20.10 comes back and edits said update after a round of editing around between 20:25 and 20:30, all of them to do with promoting pages mentioned above, around wikipedia. See contributions. On the same day, on yet another page related to Arun Budhathoki, Ozar77 makes an edit at 20:14 and 27.34.20.10 comes back at 20:29 to make another edit. See diff. 99.252.138.245 exclusively edited Arun Budhathoki between August 2014 and following January. Usedtobecool TALK 16:59, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

*Update 3: The strongest evidence was uncovered by [interaction utility] here, after I added Owlf to the list. Owlf and Ozar77 were both active for years but alternately, always working on Arun Budhathoki and related articles and occasionally Nepal national cricket team. Then, on 8 December 2018, Owlf creates Prakash Neupane diff1. And the old pattern resumes, until finally on 26 December, within two hours of Prakash Neupane being edited by Owlf, Ozar77 starts work on the same article for the first time.diff2 Usedtobecool TALK 19:37, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Update 4: Sylvia Plath was edited by both Owlf diff1 and Dansong22 diff2 in each instance to add promotional content about Arun Budhathoki there. This is consistent with the fact that Arun Budhathoki reportedly admires Plath. Nor is it surprising that Dansong22 edits Yuyutsu Sharma extensively after Arun Budhathoki reportedly received high praises from Yuyutsu in one event and Owlf carries on that mantle one last time. Usedtobecool TALK 20:53, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
*Update 5: On Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arun Budhathoki, Ozar77 continued the discussion that IP 27.34.68.251 was having with me while affirming that he was only using one account. Usedtobecool TALK 11:02, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
*Update 6: User Azkord deserves a mention even though it redirects to User:Owlf because the signature appears in many places in related articles discussed above. Usedtobecool TALK 12:47, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
*Update 7: A separate investigation was independently started here and two of the puppets were blocked, citing the same reason as Update 5 above. Usedtobecool TALK 02:58, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
*Nominator response to checkuser findings: Based on the many many many interactions I have had with Ozar77, Owlf, 27.34.68.251, etc., I find it most probable that it is a group of users sharing a group of accounts indiscriminately. I am certain that we have been conversing with a person with same level of sophistication at least ever since 27.34.68.251 started contesting the relevant deletion discussions. The style of writing, the level of outrage, the understanding of wikipedia policies (continuously reiterating - how dare you abuse your editor powers and try to delete this page about this important topic? in essence completely disregarding any attempt to tell them what wikipedia is not), etc. seems to indicate the same person; yet it is not completely unlikely that activities by any of these accounts have shown a greater understanding of the wikipedia policies, of the English language and of the etiquettes of civility, variously in the past. Therefore, I suspect it's a bunch of accounts used by bunch of people without regard for personal signatures, possibly because it's a group of accounts maintained by a firm that is involved in editing wikipedia. Therefore, based on my experiences, encounters, evidences and analysis, I suspect it is both meat-puppetry and sock-puppetry going on indiscriminately because they figured they would never get caught (just look at the number of times they appeal to nativity (nativeness?) whenever a foreign editor tries to contribute to these set of articles that they have been involved in) as virtually no one is patrolling Nepal related wikipedia pages and applying standards of English wikipedia to them, except in rare cases that users like Alsee happen to bump into one at random. That's the thing why i'm dragging you thruogh WP:ANI and i am not addimg anymore text here cause CU has already made a desicion. Owlf 18:20, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow. Yes, I endorse this SPI. Over the last few days I have found and been dealing with the old Ozar77 set of article and the admitted[1] selfpromotion creation[2] of the Arun Budhathoki article, and cleaning up some of the promotional junk-refs in other articles citing Arun Budhathoki's website Kathmandu Tribune. I believe my first encounter with Owlf is when they reverted my edit, they restored a really lousy ref to Kathmandu Tribune. The link given in the original complaint, to interaction-timeline, is pretty blatant in my opinion. Ozar77 has a rather narrow editing history, and Owlf stomps all over it.

I also submit this brand new ANI report by Owlf against Usedtobecool as evidence. Owlf is over-the-top outraged that certain articles are suddenly getting attention, and it seems to me that outrage is tied to the Ozar77/Dansong22/Arun_Budhathoki pattern. Owlf's tone and language also sounds to me very similar to the sock/IP ranting I've seen in the related AFDs and history of those articles.

Note: I just discovered that the Owlf account was originally named User:Azkord&redirect=no. I have no idea how much relevance an account rename has here, but it initially confused the hell out of me that an AFD on an article created by Ozar77 has a KEEP vote signbot listed from user Azkord but the page history shows the KEEP vote was cast by Owlf. So Owlf is more closely entwined with Ozar77 than I realized. Alsee (talk) 23:30, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alsee I have mentioned about your revert on ANI that when i started that page from Draft i submitted it with many news articled and few users removed the articles which doesn't follows WP:RS and by following that i reverted your edit and in another hand i am a wikipedia editor, i edit many Nepali pages so i can edit any pages and any other person can. This is my tone and language and multiple times i have been to Nepalese wikipedian meetup and i respect sockpuppet policy and i am aware of it and with my all due respect check at all the articles that i have created, i don't need to use two three accounts when i have one and being busy with own stuffs. And i am amazed that i found dansong id created 8-9 years ago when i even don't know what wikipedia was so, i left all to the CU and closing admin here. Owlf 04:49, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

* I am starting to feel like Galadriel here. What are the chances that the very article I presented as evidence here, Prakash Neupane becomes a cause for controversy with Alsee so much so that they end up checking up on Owlf's contributions, which leads them to the ANI against me by Owlf, which further leads them here to this SPI where I mentioned the same article before any of the parties had any contact with Owlf or the Prakash Neupane in the first place? And everyone starts having an unpleasant encounter with Owlf only after two other sock-puppets were banned for doing the exact same things in the exact same manner.Usedtobecool TALK 11:47, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Usedtobecool I am not much free like you to fight here as i only come to contribute on wikipedia and when i come online i always used to see the recent changes of the pages which i have starred before i think you know well about that or not idk and i discussed with alsee just about the content removal and he is not connected with your issue and i check Nepalese deletion pages and saw you doing afd on Naya Patrika after that Annapurna Media and also you put me on sockpuppet really? I am an Nepali editor and i edit every Nepalese pages and i have also edited pages which you have edited and is that mean you're my sockpuppet? Grow up here. And the thing you're doing is really suspicious and i started ANI topic against you and i think i can start about what i think after i check your contributions like you put me on sockpuppet and i am neither attacking you personally and nor i do it to anyother particular editor on wikipedia and i think CU has already made a desicion here. Owlf 14:45, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You were the one who directed me to those articles on Naya Patrika and its editor. You asked if I would delete all Nepalese journalism pages and specified those two. I looked at the editor. It had one decent source. So, I removed the claims not supported by sourcing and left the page alone. The Nayapatrika page cited the primary source. So, I put it up for speedy deletion. A better more diligent editor added a reliable source, disqualifying it for speedy deletion and removed the tag, and I left that page alone thereafter. Tell me about your reasonable actions lately, why don't you?Usedtobecool TALK 15:32, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk, CheckUser, and/or patrolling admin comments[edit]

  •  Possilikely (a mix between possible and likely). Owlf and Ozar77 are on the same ISP, but they sometimes use different devices to edit Wikipedia. I think they might be meat puppets. The master is stale, so I can't compare them to that account. no No comment with respect to IP address(es). NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 04:14, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm closing this.
    • Dansong22 has not edited in six years and is not blocked. This should not have been filed here.
    • Azkord is an account that does not exist and I don't see any evidence provided as to how they are connected to this anyway.
    • All of the IPs are stale. There is a range or maybe a couple of ranges that can be established they're also stale.
    • South Asian editors with a common interest in cricket is like fish with a common interest in water.
  • If there's more evidence that Owlf and Ozar77 are the same person, or meatpuppets violating policy, please file a new report. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 15:33, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
