I first really noticed Spangineer when we worked together on a the new FLC guidelines. He's extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and diplomatic. I've seen him show up on my watchlist more than a few times correcting syntax, sorting stubs, and reverting vandalism. And take a look at his talk page; it's full of thank you notes for welcoming. I think he'd make a great admin. Plus I like his choice of books. (Oh yeah, and he's beeen around since Nov. 2004 with 5000+ edits). Dmcdevit 21:13, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
Well, I expect I would help out most with vandalism reversion and speedy deletions. I don't have too much stuff on my watchlist, but I think CryptoDerk's tool is awesome and lately I've been using that more frequently. I'll also be sure to check out the Admin notice page and be available to help out with random tasks like patching up bad page moves (like the one I did to The Pearl back when I was a bona fide noob). When I first started on Wikipedia, I spent some time on VfD, but I haven't ventured back too often, because frankly, the place rather scares me with its monstrous size. I might start helping out over there, but I want to try to balance my time between adding content and janitorial tasks.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
I'm definitely most pleased with the work I've done on welding topics – in particular welding and gas metal arc welding – since I feel like one of Wikipedia's weaknesses is its lack of comprehensive and readable coverage of practical technology. Welding is featured, and I'm hoping that gas metal arc welding will be as well by sometime in July. I'm also quite pleased with my smaller contributions related to Mexico and fairly obscure Christian topics, as well as helping to sort the thousands of US-geo-stubs. As a side note, in the interest of full disclosure, I probably have 1000+ stub sorting edits, which some might argue inflates my edit count somewhat.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
I generally try to avoid conflict – I've got pretty strong political and religious views, but I tend to avoid debatable topics related to those issues. I expect to do the same in the future. Probably my biggest bout of stress came while working on the featured list criteria. There was some initial debate about what types of lists ought to be featured, and I spent a fair amount of time arguing my position. In the end, I found myself beginning to see the value of the other side's position, and while I'm still not fully convinced, I've relaxed my stance. Also, sometimes, when I've got alot to do over the weekend, my signpost article stresses me out a bit, but then I remember that Michael is writing about half a dozen of them. I can't remember any notable conflicts over editing – I try to do my best to incorporate other people's ideas when reworking their edits, and I try to remind myself that I don't "own" the welding articles.
