Neil Gaiman appearance: should I attend?[edit]

The facts are these: Neil Gaiman is making at appearance at the Cleveland Public Library, which is four hours from where I live. I'd happily drive four hours to hear him speak- but I wouldn't like to drive four hours to get shut out because the space was full, and this is a non-ticketed free event, first-come first-seated. I need information:

What is the seating at the facility where he will be speaking?
What's the average number of people who attend a Gaiman appearance?
How early would I want to arrive in order to be sure of a seat?

I tried that first. The librarian there was not at all helpful. I wondered if she understood what a rock star she had booked. Sounds like a typical librarian. So what time do the doors open, then? If I were you I'd suck it up and arrive like three hours before the doors open, if it's possible for you to leave home that early. Bring a book (a Neil Gaiman book, perhaps) and an iPod filled with Tori Amos CDs and just wait there in line. Oh, I don't know. I bet you would actually get a chance to talk to Kelley Armstrong. I went to a signing with Neil Gaiman last year, and we waited for hours before finally giving up. There was no time for him to have any interaction with the fans; just a quick signature and on to the next fan. I don't know why we've shifted to small, but I agree with John Baker: as a fan, you'll probably get more out of an interaction with a lesser known artist. Back when hardly anyone knew who R.E.M. was, a friend and I corresponded with Buck & Stipe, asking them for the chords & lyrics of some of their songs so that our band could cover them! And they graciously complied—and this was back when no one knew what the hell Stipe was mumbling about.
