Incarceration in the United Kingdom[edit]

The result of the discussion was Retarget to Her Majesty's Prison Service. Ruslik_Zero 15:44, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to get some feedback on whether I'm right in thinking this redirect should be deleted. The target article covers a small subtopic of "Incarceration in the United Kingdom" (important subtopics such as demographics and legislation are not covered, e.g.). The presence of the redirect (opposed to a redlink for the topic) is a bit misleading, and might discourage the creation of an article on "Incarceration in the United Kingdom". • I think the argument to delete the redirect is weak. Yes, there is some truth to the argument that a redirect may discourage article creation at a given title. But that rule only really applies when the redirect has enough inbound links that someone will see and be inspired by the redlink. In this case, the redirect is an orphan. The redlink argument doesn't work. I agree with you, however, that the title implies a broader discussion of the topic that the current target contains. Retargetting is probably appropriate. I have not yet found a perfect target - there does not appear to be a UK equivalent to United States incarceration rate. Perhaps Prison population of England and Wales or Her Majesty's Prison Service would be less bad? Rossami (talk) 15:51, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I originally created the redirect (two years ago!) and I think back then the Prisoner Security Categories article was more general and was a better fit... I'd agree that the redirect does point to a fairly narrow part of the subject, I'd say that linking to Her Majesty's Prison Service probably makes more sense in my view. -- gtdp (T)(C) 16:26, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree with the eminently sensible suggestions of Rossami and Gtdp that the redirect should be retargetted to Her Majesty's Prison Service. I'll enact this change now.
